Chapter 403
Spoiled by the President
Nell suddenly lost interest in understanding the whole thing as she felt that it was meaningless.
She said softly, âIâll think about this matter carefully. Itâs getting late, and Grandpa Garrettâs health is poor, so please rest early.â
Old Master Garrett nodded.
Only then did Nell leave with Gideon and the others.
The meeting had been too calm.
Apart from the several members from the side branches of the Garrett family, the few people in the center of the vortex were surprisingly calm.
Old Master Leith and Old Madam Quinton went back to their residence. After all, they were just middlemen in this matter, and it did not matter to them whether Nell accepted the identity of being a Garrett or not.
In any case, Nell was their best granddaughter-in-law and that was enough.
Her other background identities did not matter.
Nell followed Gideon back to Fengqiao Villa.
She did not speak the entire journey back in the car and simply looked out the window with an expressionless face. It was impossible to tell if she was happy or angry.
Gideon reached out as he took her hand that was slightly cold in the autumn night, he asked, âIs there anything you want to ask me?â
Nell withdrew her gaze.
When she turned to look at him, her eyes were surprisingly calm.
âYouâve actually known about this matter for a long time, right?â
Gideon raised his eyebrows.
A trace of surprise flashed in the depths of his eyes.
However, he did not hide it, and instead, he replied honestly, âI had a hunch before but couldnât get any confirmation, so I can only say that I was uncertain.â
âThen, do you believe that Iâm Juliette Garrettâs daughter?â
Gideon remained silent.
His gaze was deep like a whirlpool that could suck people in.
After a long time, he said in a low voice, âDo you know why Aunt Juliette died?â
Nell shook her head.
She did not know much about the Garrett familyâs matters.
That applied matters regarding Juliette Garrett as well.
Gideon said, âShe died of depression. She was trapped by her emotions and spent many years failing to come out of it. She finally committed suicide.â
Nell was shocked!
âDidnât the outsiders say that she died of sickness?â
âThat was just a well-meaning lie.â
Gideon sighed softly. Then, he held her hand and rubbed it gently as he said, âAt that time, Aunt Juliette was already very ill, and depression had tortured her to the point of physical pain. The outside world only knew that she was sick, but they did not know what she was sick with.
âOn one occasion, during the Mid-Autumn Festival, everyone in the Garrett family went out to watch the lanterns, leaving Aunt Juliette and the maids at home. It was on that night that she could no longer bear the pain of her sickness, she slit her wrists to commit suicide. When people finally found her, the whole bathtub was filled with blood and she had already stopped breathing, so they could not save her even if they wanted to.â
Nell sat there in shock, as if not daring to imagine the scene.
How much pain did a person have to be in to muster up the courage to slit their own wrists and choose to commit suicide?
She pursed her lips and felt a tightness in her chest, as if a heavy stone was crushing her heart, making it hard to breathe.
After a long time, she finally hissed, âWhy? Why did she end up with depression?â
âThere are several reasons.â
Gideon looked at her and said in a deep voice, âShe fell in love with a person, but later, for many reasons, they were forced to separate and that person died in an accident.â
Nell was fiercely shaken.
Gideonâs eyes became deep. âAt that time, Aunt Juliette had already lost the will to live. It was only later when she accidentally discovered that she was pregnant that it made her strong.
âThe rest is as you know it. The child was only half a year old when she was lost. Aunt Juliette could not bear the blow she suffered and developed depression.
âIn order to cure her illness, the Garrett family adopted Stephanie from the orphanage, but the effects were minimal.
âAfter a few years, she still chose to leave.â
Nell clenched her fists secretly and asked again, âWho was that man? Why were they forced to separate?â
Gideon shook his head.
âI donât know. I was very young at that time and these were all things that I heard when the adults were chatting. The other partyâs identity was very mysterious and they were all tight-lipped about it, but I accidentally saw a crest Aunt Juliette left behind, so I can guess where that man is from.â
Nell was stunned.
âWhere was he from?â
âThe Shelby family.â
Nell was really shocked!
She stared at Gideon with wide eyes, and her mouth was also slightly open from shock.
Gideon added, âThe crest was the unique purple Bauhinia flower of the Shelby family. For the other party to leave this with Aunt Juliette, it indicates that heâs related to the Shelby family, but itâs still unclear who exactly that person was. If you want to know, we can go check.â
Nell fell silent.
Did she want to know?
Of course, she did.
After all, if she was Juliette Garrettâs daughter, then that person may be her biological father!
However...
Perhaps it was because the news came so suddenly that she was unable to accept the fact that her parents were other people so quickly.
She was silent for a moment before rubbing her brows wearily.
âForget it. Letâs not look into it for now. Let me think about it.â
Seeing this, Gideon reached out to hold her hand.
âDonât think too much about it. No matter what the truth is, this is the older generationâs problem and wonât change anything now. But Iâll always be with you.â
Only then did Nell curl the corners of her lips upwards and give him an assured smile.
After returning home, she was feeling a little tired and thought she would be able to fall asleep soon after lying on the bed. However, for some reason, her mind was a mess which prevented her from sleeping.
Grandpa Garrettâs words kept echoing in her head, stirring up the already chaotic thoughts.
Gideon found that she was acting strangely and so he hugged her from behind while he asked softly, âAre you still thinking about the Garrett family?â
Nell did not deny it and she simply nodded.
Gideon sat up from the bed.
Then, he got out of bed, poured a cup of warm water, and handed it to her before taking her back into his arms.
âDo you want me to chat with you for a while?â
Nell nodded.
In fact, there was not much she wanted to say today, but her thoughts were too messy for her to sleep, so talking about them out loud might even let Gideon help her sort out her thoughts so that she could sleep better.

The entire time, Gideon listened quietly without interrupting.
When Nell finished saying everything, she felt much more relaxed.
She looked up at him and smiled apologetically. âAm I thinking too much?â
Gideon shook his head.
âWhat youâre thinking is normal.â
After a pause, he added, âGrandpa Garrettâs refusal to tell you the truth might also be due to the fact that the Shelby familyâs situation is complicated, and he doesnât want you to get mixed up in that muddy water.â
