Chapter 417
Spoiled by the President
Old Madam Griffinâs words caused Yvette to blush. Embarrassed, she stuck her tongue out.
A noble lady spoke up on her behalf, âYvie is still growing, itâs good that she likes to eat.â
âAll of you spoil her too much!â
The group of people laughed merrily. The next moment, a servant came to remind everyone that dinner was served, so Old Madam Griffin led them toward the dining room.
Upon entering the dining room, Nell saw Gideon and also a young man trailing behind him.
The young manâs face was frighteningly pale. He appeared to be around eighteen or nineteen years old. Although his frame was quite emaciated, his features were chiseled and his mannerisms were polite. Due to prolonged illness, his body looked sickly pale. He sat in a wheelchair and was pushed along by a servant.
Nonetheless, the boy seemed to be getting along well with Gideon. Sitting in his wheelchair, he was smiling and talking to Gideon. Surprisingly, Gideon appeared to be extraordinarily patient with the boy, even turning his head to listen to him.
âBailey, come here, Iâll introduce you,â Old Madam said.
The young man named Bailey gestured to his servant to push him forward. Old Madam tugged at Nellâs hand and said to him, âThis is Second Elder Brotherâs wife, Nell Jennings. Before this, you were sick and didnât come with us to visit the family in China, so youâve never met her. Anyway, itâs still not too late to meet her now.â
Bailey smiled good-naturedly. âNice to meet you, Sister-in-law.â
Nell politely returned his greeting. âHello, itâs nice to meet you too.â
âThis is a gift Iâve brought back from Melbourne a while ago. Iâm so sorry that I couldnât visit you in China, so I hope that this makes up for it.â
As he spoke, Bailey retrieved a gift box from behind him and presented it to Nell.
Nell was momentarily stunned.
Yvette immediately piped up. âThird Brother, you actually brought a gift for little sister-in-law but not for us! How unfair!â
Bailey grinned. âWhatâs the rush? Everyone has one, theyâre all in my room. After we finish dinner, you can come and get it from me.â
Nell glanced at Gideon and saw him nod imperceptibly. Only then did she accept the present and smiled at Bailey. âThank you.â
Everyone took their seats and began to eat.
During dinner, many people had expressed their concerns about Baileyâs health but he responded to all their enquiries with a vague smile and said that he was fine.
However, Nell could see that Baileyâs face was turning a tinge of gray and there was not a single drop of color on his lips. Telling everyone that he was fine was a polite lie.
What kind of illness did Bailey have?
She had a good impression of this young man, so she was a little more curious. Maybe she could ask Gideon about it later tonight.
âLittle sister-in-law, let me give you a congratulatory toast!â Yvette suddenly said, making her way toward Nell with a glass of red wine in her hand.
Nell was slightly taken aback, uncertain why Yvette wanted to give her a toast out of nowhere. However, for courtesy sake, she raised her wine glass and clinked it gently against Yvetteâs.
âLittle sister-in-law, Iâm very crass by nature. If I have somehow offended you, I hope that you can forgive me,â Yvette said.
Nell nodded and cast a thoughtful glance at Gideon.
Old Madam smiled. âYvie, your little sister-in-law is different from you. Sheâs a light drinker, so you better not get her drunk.â
Yvette grinned. âOf course, not. Little sister-in-law and I are such good friends, right?â
As she said this, she threw a cheeky smile at Nell.
How could Nell say anything else?
Nell responded with a faint smile. âYvie is cute and adorable, and acts so carefreely, of course I like her very much.â
Old Madam did not pick up any veiled connotation from Nellâs response. She truly believed that their relationship was good, so she nodded in satisfaction.
âItâs good that you like one another. During you and Gideonâs visit, if thereâs anything that youâre unfamiliar with that us old folks donât know about, you can ask Yvette or Bailey. They are more familiar with this place than both of you, so itâs easier to get things done.â
Nell and Gideon expressed their thanks.
After drinking, Yvette continued asking, âLittle sister-in-law, so what are you doing here this time?â
Nell put on a blank expression. âNothing much, we just happen to have some free time and thought weâd visit.â
âIn that case, you must bring me with you. I love being a tour guide.â
Upon saying that, she blinked at Nell expectantly as if the two of them were truly close friends.
Nell thought to herself that she should work on her acting skills a little more. Just look at Miss Starkâs stellar performance!
The dinner ended on a cheery note. After dinner, Gideon had disappeared to goodness-knew-where while Yvette went to look for her gift with Bailey.
Nell had nothing to do, so she took a walk in the garden.
âLittle sister-in-law.â Yvette suddenly caught up to her and grabbed her arm from behind. âAre you taking a walk? Iâll accompany you.â
Yvetteâs forceful behavior left Nell speechless.
âArenât you going to look for your brothers?â
âWhy do I need to look for them? All they talk about is men stuff, none of it is the least bit interesting to me. I saw that youâre walking alone and I also wanted to take a walk, so I came to accompany you.â
Although Yvette had acted just like a silly elder sister, Nell knew better. A silly elder sister would not try to frame another person.
âHmm, Iâm tired now. Iâm going to sit there for a bit.â Nell pointed toward a gazebo in a distance.
âSure! We can sit there and chat!â
â...â
Nell was struck speechless. Before she could protest, Yvette had already pulled her toward the gazebo.
The Griffin family truly knew how to enjoy life. Even though they lived overseas, they had built a large Chinese-style mansion.
Surrounding the gazebo was a picturesque scenery. Right beside it was a crescent-shaped pond filled with various water lilies and lotus flowers.
Although they were not blooming, there was still a faint waft of floral fragrance in the air.

âLittle sister-in-law, look, thereâs a lotus over there,â Yvette suddenly pointed to the pond and exclaimed.
Nell raised her eyebrows. It was almost August, how could there still be lotuses?
Who was she trying to fool?
Nell looked up with incredulity. The pond did seem to contain a white mass, but the darkness of the night made it impossible to see clearly.
âMaybe itâs just a piece of trash.â
âHow is that possible? Do you think this place is a tourist attraction? What trash? Iâm telling you, this place is cleaned every single day. Thatâs definitely a lotus.â
After speaking, Yvette measured the distance with her hands. âLittle sister-in-law, hold on to me, Iâm going to pick up the lotus.â
Nellâs eyebrow immediately twitched.
Subconsciously, she felt that Yvette was attempting something devious.
Her mind was instantly filled with various plots of ancient palace dramas where the concubines would sabotage the main character to climb into power.
