Chapter 456
Spoiled by the President
The woman before her looked young, and her facial features could be considered beautiful if she did not look so emotionless. Her eyes betrayed a hint of coldness as she met Nellâs eyes.
The little girl beside the woman stared at Nell with her head tilted to the side. She looked as if she could not understand why Nell would stop them.
Nell stared back at them and felt her throat tightened. There were so many questions she wanted to ask, but she could not get any of them out.
âAre you Old Kâs family?â Nell whispered after a while.
The womanâs expression shifted, and her gaze grew cautious.
âYou know Old K?â
âI...â Nell paused just for a moment before she continued, âIâm his friend. I used to race with him...â
She did not even finish her sentence before the womanâs expression went cold.
âI see youâre from that place, huh? What? You couldnât get anything out of me back in the country so you came here? What are you going to do next?
Lock us up against our will and interrogate us?â
Nell was taken aback. She did not expect such a response from her.
Her gaze darkened immediately after that as if she had realized something.
âAre you saying someone is after you two?â
The woman stared at her and chuckled darkly. âDonât try to pretend. You are the good guys and apparently the bad guys too. You think just because I wonât admit it Iâm an idiot who will trust you and tell you everything? Keep dreaming.â
Nellâs expression fell.
âMiss, I think you misunderstood. I was Old Kâs comrade, but I left Dragon Regiment a long time ago. Iâm not too clear about whatâs happening inside.
Itâs not just you who is saddened by his death; Iâm devastated too. I came to Country F just to find out the truth about his death. If you know anything, you have to let me know. Donât worry. Iâm not the same as those people you just mentioned. I just donât want him to die such an uncertain death. I believe you and I are thinking the same thing. Am I right?â
The woman regarded her coldly. She did not speak for a while.
Nancy and Matthew came to Nell when they saw what was happening.
They all knew Old Kâs story and how much effort Nell had put into uncovering the truth.
It was expected of her to ask for some useful clues now that she met Old Kâs family. Those clues could be where they based their investigation around.
The two of them chimed in to help her. âYeah, miss! You can trust us! We came all this way to clear up your husbandâs death. You must want to know who killed him, right?â
Even then, the woman did not say a word.
She stared at the four of them in silence as the alarm in her eyes dissipated. There was not much trust or warmth in them though.
âThereâs no need to do that. You donât need to ask me any questions. I donât know anything. Heâs dead. I just want to live the rest of my life in peace with my daughter. We donât want to be disturbed. Please just give up.â
With those words, the woman was ready to leave with her daughter.
Nell scrambled for something to say. âIf you guys are concerned about your safety, we can protect you...â
The woman turned and gave her a sardonic smile.
âProtect us? Do you even know who they are? The people looking for us? How are you so sure that you can protect us?â
Matthew saw Nell hitting a snag and knew that he had to do something. âIf you know who they are, why donât you tell us so we can help you take them down? Itâs definitely safer than facing them on your own.â
The woman remained silent for a moment.
Then, she sneered.
âI wonât say anything. If you really want to know, go ahead and investigate yourself, but since youâre his friend, Iâll leave you with one piece of advice:
heâs already dead, and even if you find out the truth, itâs not going to bring him back. In the end, youâll likely get nothing done and get yourself into a bunch of trouble. You canât afford to offend everyone in this world.â
She left with her daughter without sparing a glance at anyone after that.
Matthew and Nancy were furious.
âNell, what kind of person is she? Weâre just being helpful. Her rotten attitude...â
âStop talking.â
Nellâs eyebrows furrowed lightly. Her face remained expressionless as she saw the mother and daughter off. Then, she went to Gideonâs side.
Gideon saw the entirety of what had happened.
At this moment, the expression on Nellâs face was blank and all that remained was a solemn look. He raised an eyebrow and asked, âWhatâs on your mind?â
âI donât know why, but I feel like this matter is much more complicated than I thought it would be,â Nell murmured.
Gideon did not say anything, but his eyes were inquisitive.
Nell sighed.
âI hope Iâm just overthinking this. I heard her tone of voice just now, and if Bauhinia Clan is really in on this, she didnât need to be so nervous and defensive. Iâm just afraid that Old K may have gotten himself involved in something else. Things will be much more complicated than this if he did.â
Gideon did not want her to worry too much, so he reached out to hold her hand.
âDonât dwell too much on it. Weâll visit the Tigerâs Den tomorrow, and weâll get our answers then.â
Nell nodded.
Everyone came out of the house in a happy mood, but their hearts were heavy as they left for home.
It was not until after dinner when Nell received a call from Grandma Leith in her room that her mood improved. The old madam said Lizzy missed her and wanted to talk to her.
Lizzy was now seven years old. Grandma Leith had taken good care of her. The girlâs body was not as weak as it was before. She could now run around and play with her buddies at school for a little while.
This kid might be small, but she would grow up to be a beautiful girl. Her facial features were still developing, but many could already see the resemblance between her and her father.
Nell looked at her and could not help but laugh. She felt happiness and contentment bubbling inside her. It was a precious and irreplaceable feeling.

The corners of Lizzyâs lips tugged into a sweet smile. âOf course I am, mommy! When are you and daddy coming back? When youâre home, can I bring you to see the lake lights?â
Nell heard that there was an event at school where the children were asked to write down their wishes and put them in a lake light and let it wander down the stream. It was a way for the children to plant their wishes somewhere.
Lizzy must have not been satisfied by that one light she put in the lake, so she asked Nell to go with her once more when she was back in the country.
âI think Iâll be here for a while, but wait for me, okay? I promise Iâll go with you,â Nell said with a smile.
âOkay.â
âWhat did Lizzy write as her wish?â
Lizzy winked mysteriously. âMommy, I canât tell you that. The wish wonât come true if I said it out loud.â
Nell chuckled and thought that this kid seemed pretty serious about her wish.
