Chapter 471
Spoiled by the President
âYou said that you have no way out. So tell me, how is it that youâre left with no choice?â
Wiping her tears, Helen continued, âI was happily studying in the capital when my dad suddenly called me to come home. After I went back, I found out that he wanted me to drop out of my studies and return so he can marry me off.
âA few girls back home married early so I didnât think too much into it. I told them that marriage wasnât in my plan yet and asked them to wait until I graduate.
âWho would have thought that my dad would bring a man back the next day. The man was pushing fifty and a president of a listed company. My dad said that our company is facing a huge deficit and owes people a large debt. Our entire family will be left cold and hungry in the streets if I donât say yes.
âCousin, Sister-in-law, I really ran out of options so I snuck out of the house. I have no family in the capital except for the old madam and you guys. I donât have a fourth person to ask for help.â
Nell gave her an intriguing look, and her eyes feigned a smile.
âYouâre saying that your family business is facing a huge deficit and your dad is forcing you to marry?â
âYes.â
âWhat does it have to do with you seducing your cousin?â
Helen was speechless.
Having been put in the spot, her pale face gradually pigmented into red, with the flush creeping to her ears and her neck too.
Nell sat there, unfazed.
As Nell toyed with her slender and tender fingers, she threw a remark. âItâs really not a huge deal if you just came to us for help. From what I know, itâs not the first or the second time the Leiths have bailed your family out over the years.
âOf course, we wonât just sit by and watch because weâre relatives and youâre Momâs niece. However, youâve crossed the line with your actions today.
Wouldnât that make me a fool, playing into your hands if I were to help you?â
Helenâs body trembled.
Once again, she dropped down to her knees and heavily kowtowed.
âSister-in-law, I was wrong! I was wrong! It was a moment of weakness! I was shameless! Please forgive me! I was really wrong.â
Nell frowned as Helen choked with sobs.
She was not one to set herself high above the masses. Nell would, at most, give the cold shoulder if she came across someone she did not like.
Where did Helen learn the habit of kneeling before others at every turn?
She said in a gruff voice, âQuit bowing. People would think we did something to you if they see you.â
Nevertheless, Helen turned a deaf ear and kept on kowtowing. Soon, her forehead swelled up.
As the furrow between Nellâs brows deepened, she turned to tip the wink at a nearby maid. Immediately, someone went ahead to help Helen up.
âMiss Wilburn, stop kowtowing. Our Young Missus is your peer. What would outsiders speak of our Young Missus if they saw you?â
Helen stood up in tears. Although her pretty forehead had swollen to a huge bump, her beautifully weeping face could tug at heartstrings.
âYou mentioned earlier that your company is facing a deficit? What happened?â
With a glint in her eyes, Helen stammered, âI... Iâm not clear on the details. Dad and Brother are the ones who manage the family business.â
Nell turned to Gideon. âDo you know?â
Gideon frowned. He resided in the capital while the Wilburns were rooted in Yuncheng. He did not have a clear picture of what was happening in Yuncheng.
Hence, he shook his head. âI donât.â
Nell fell deep in thought before she asked, âDidnât you let the old madam know?â
Helen mumbled, âI donât have the courage to tell the old madam.â
âWhy?â
Nell found it odd from the very beginning. By right, the old madam was sought first if the Wilburns ran into anything at all.
All the more she and Gideon were unlikely help if even the old madam refused to lend a hand.
Helen fiddled with her fingers furiously, creating a knot in the front of her dress.
After a while, she bit her lips and replied, âMy dad said that the old madam will hate our family and never help us again if she finds out.â
Raising a brow, Nell grew more curious.
âWhat happened to your family? Why are you so sure grandma wonât help you?â
Helen pursed her lips, refusing to speak.
Nell was in no hurry. Her finger casually tapped on the armchair as she looked at Helen quietly.
It took a while before Helen awkwardly answered, âI heard that... there seemed to be some imported goods seized at the customs.â
Nell had a bad feeling.
Something did not add up.
She pondered for a while and suddenly, the color drained from her face.
âWas something found in the goods?â
Turning as white as a sheet, Helen explained in a fluster.
âNo, we were framed. It definitely wasnât us who put the stuff in the goods. It mustâve been done by someone with an ax to grind. That person must have put the stuff in to set my family up.
âWith the goods seized, the company wasnât able to deliver the goods on time and suffered a massive loss. My dad is looking to face jail time. He said that our family will be in ruins if I donât marry President Yellowman. On the contrary, if I agree to it, President Yellowman will help out so that my dad wonât have to sit in jail. Heâd even pump money into the company.
âBut Iâm only in my twenties! I donât want to marry someone older than my dad. Sister-in-law, please take pity on me. I really donât know who else to look for help other than you!â
Sullen, Nell sneered. âI canât wrap my head around this. What does this have to do with your earlier behavior? Or perhaps you think that by getting in bed with your cousin, heâd be willing to help you?â
Helen froze. She lowered her head and held her tongue.
Staring at her downcast eyes, Nellâs eyes turned colder.

Helenâs eyes widened in surprise at these words.
She stared at Nell in horror, as though she was looking at some gruesome monster.
Nell let out a taunting smile. âThereâs no need to be surprised. Iâve seen far more diabolical plots than youâd ever see. This little trick you played isnât hard to guess.â
She softly replied. Then Nell picked up her cup for a sip of tea before continuing, âYour companyâs goods were seized at the customs. This matter involves smuggling. The old madam would definitely help you if it were any other matters but this has to do with the law. You know well that the fair and just Leith family with a squeaky clean record will never bail you out.â
