Chapter 488

Spoiled by the President

Gale knew that Nell was unconcerned about the Shelby family, and he also knew that she was a very opinionated person.

However, before this, no matter how many times she rejected him, he still had a glimmer of hope at the bottom of his heart.

Today, this small glint of hope was completely crushed and shattered.

He sighed softly.

“I admit, what you said was right. I was tired of fighting before and did not try my best to look for you. There were times when news about you surfaced, but due to some reason, after I was done handling my business and want to continue looking for you, you couldn’t be found.”

“That’s why I felt sorry for you in the beginning. I only felt much more relieved after seeing that the Leith family was taking good care of you.

“Regarding the inheritance of the Bauhinia Clan, I’ll just be straight with you. I was vying after that position, but Nelly, you have to understand that as a man, who wouldn’t want that position?

“Your father was caught up in romance. He wasn’t even good at the business and nor did he want to inherit it. He was even less willing to entangle himself into this power struggle.

“But he just had to be born as the Shelby family’s eldest son. It was his destiny to inherit the family business and all I had was pure ambition. I have sacrificed so much for the Shelby family over the years. But in the end, when I want to claim this position, I was accused of being illegitimate.”

Nell sneered, “So you want me to go back just to become your puppet? But in actual fact, you will be the one in control and the entire Shelby family will still be in your hands.”

A sudden gloom flashed across Gale’s face.

“I can’t stop you from thinking like that.”

Nell spoke in a deep voice, “We’re in a new era now, so it’s hard for you to keep this kind of rules.”

Gale let out a bitter laugh.

“Honestly speaking, I think this rule is absurd but as a family that has existed for 300 years, certain old habits just can’t be changed overnight.

Moreover, this involves too many parties. One wrong move can put me on the spot, so I must be careful about this.”

Nell frowned.

“If that’s the case, having me involve Viemond in this mess will be out of the question.”

Gale smiled and said, “I knew you wouldn’t agree. I’m just here as a formality.”

He paused for a bit then continued, “I’m not the only one who knows of your existence now. The others will still be looking for you even if I didn’t show up today.”

“What can they do to me?”

“They certainly can’t do anything to you out in the open, but what about in secret? The Leith family is currently revered and Gideon has only just taken power not too long ago. As the saying goes, there is no flower that will bloom for a hundred days. The Leith family was invincible back in the day, but after all these years, they have already moved on to take the righteous path. How can an innocent businessman fight with the mafia? Nelly, if you don’t care for yourself, you ought to think about him.”

Nell’s eyes sharpened as she glared at Gale.

“What do you mean by this?”

“Even if it’s not for the Leith family, I won’t touch him, seeing our relationship as uncle and niece. I’m just worried about what the others are capable of.”

“The others in the Shelby family?”

“Yup.”

“Ha! They dare?”

“You shouldn’t underestimate the Shelby family. Even though it seems like the Shelby family’s power is waning, it’s just a power shift in what remains of a noble family from the previous dynasty. There are certain things that you do not know and can’t even fathom. Just based on the connections the Shelby family has, a family that has been established for 300 years, the complexity of it all is not something the Leith family can compare to.”

Nell sat in silence.

She had to admit that even though what Gale said was unpleasant, it was undeniable when she thought it through.

Moreover, obvious bullets could be avoided, but hidden arrows were hard to dodge.

Nell said in a cold voice, “Are they so afraid that one day I would take their place?”

Gale let out a sigh.

“The internal affairs of the Shelby family are more complicated and corrupt than you imagine. Many traditions are still practiced to this day. It’s not something that can be changed in a short time.”

Gale smiled wryly and continued, “Up until now, choosing a successor is the same as choosing the emperor during ancient times. They must obey the customs left by the ancestors and hence why they still follow the order of birth.”

Nell scoffed, “In that case, the order of succession shouldn’t be anywhere close to my turn. Weren’t your ancestors misogynistic?”

Gale shook his head helplessly and replied, “They were influenced by Western culture. They want to keep their traditions but at the same time, they’re learning about the equality of men and women. In the West, women can become presidents, so why can’t the family’s heir be a woman?”

Nell did not know whether to laugh or cry upon hearing this.

What was this weird family?

It was a feat that the Shelby family could survive until today.

The ancestors certainly left a solid foundation so that their future generations could survive no matter how brain-damaged they might be.

“Alright, I heard everything you’ve said. Let me think about it!”

Gale was stumped that Nell did not reject him right away.

Though he also knew his place and did not force the topic any further.

Gale sat down for a while and Nell got to know more about the Bauhinia Clan from his explanation. After the lunch banquet, he needed to visit another old friend and so, he left the party.

Once Nell arrived home after the party was over in the afternoon, she ordered a servant to ask Gideon to meet her in their bedroom.

As the host and star of the party after having married and even fathered a child, Gideon could not escape drinking to entertain the guests.

When Gideon got home, he purposely took a shower before entering their bedroom as he was afraid Nell would be sensitive to the smell of alcohol.

“What’s up? Are you upset?”

Seeing Nell sat on the sofa with a downcast expression on her face, Gideon walked over, sat down next to her, and carried her in his arms.

This was the perfect time as Nell looked beautiful in Gideon’s eyes and her body felt nice to the touch, so he loved to hug her and play with the extra meat on her body.

However, Nell was frustrated because she felt that she was too chubby.

In reality, she was 163 cm and only weighed around 54 kg. Even after birth, she weighed just slightly over 60 kg, which was not considered fat at all.

As Gideon gripped Nell’s love handles, she instinctively pushed him on his shoulders and cried, “Stop it! I’m so heavy now. Put me down!”

The man chuckled.

“You’re not heavy. You’re so soft and comfy.”

He planted a kiss on her cheek as he finished the sentence.

Nell immediately blushed.

She slapped his hand and said, “Stop playing! The baby’s still here.”

Gideon raised his eyebrows and smirked suggestively.

“How am I playing now? What are you thinking of? I just want to hug you. You’re not thinking that...”

Nell’s face suddenly flushed red as she turned to stare at him.

Gideon shut his mouth but could not help grinning.

She felt so helpless, she could only yell, “You big bully! All you know is to make fun of me!”
