Chapter 53

Spoiled by the President

With eyes fixated on him, Nell was sort of bought into it.

However, the thought of conversation she heard was as if something had pricked her throat, unable to be dismissed.

Her face darkened as she made a genuine remark, “Gideon Leith, I don’t know why you married me, I don’t know how long this marriage will last but I hope that if one day, you wish to end this marriage, you’ll let me know in advance. I don’t mind you falling for another woman, neither do I mind a divorce, but I take offense when it comes to betrayal, regardless as husband and wife or as business partners. Do you understand?

The man’s eyes turned dark.

He darted a cold stare at her and solemnly replied, “You don’t mind me falling for another woman?”

It was a thorn in her heart.

Nell could not make out why she had this feeling.

She and Gideon were not in love, and they were only together because of another reason. There was no cause for her to be in the way if he really found true love one day.

Hence, she nodded.

“You don’t mind a divorce?”

She nodded again.

The man scoffed out the blue.

The gentle face was replaced with a glum.

He got up and walked out.

Nell was a little taken aback.

Before she snapped out of her thoughts, Gideon came back with two red booklets.

These were their marriage registrations.

Nell’s eye was twitching, being in the dark of what this man was up to. However, her gut was telling her that it would not be to her liking.

He walked towards the front of a table and picked up a lighter. Suddenly the two red booklets were set ablaze.

Nell widened her eyes.

“Gideon Leith, what are you doing?”

She pounced to try and snatch the ignited marriage registrations.

Nevertheless, the man stopped her.

Grabbing her by the hands, he pressed her against a wall.

“Nell Jennings, I told you, I, Gideon Leith, will only have one woman and marry once in this lifetime. Did you think I was playing with you? I’ll prove to you today. Our marriage registrations are burned, so don’t you dare divorce me! From today onward, don’t even think about it!”

“...”

Nell merely made a passing comment. Was there a need for this man to take it so seriously?

The strong clutch around her wrist was aching from the strain.

She turned at the wrist with difficulty, only to find that she could not pull away from his clutches. Thus, she budged.

“Alright, alright, I’ve got it. Can you please let me go?”

Gideon still had not loosened his grip.

Keeping an eagle eye on her, he said roughly, “Then, are you still thinking about divorce?”

Nell rolled her eyes.

“Mr. Leith, you’re the one caught cheating. Who gave you the right to ask me that?”

Gideon finally broke into laughter.

Struck by a thought, he reached out to mess up her hair. He murmured, “Silly!”

Nell was speechless in confusion.

Fortunately for her, he finally released her. He explained, “She’s an important person in my life but not the kind you’re thinking of.”

Nell was in doubt.

Gideon smiled at her reaction.

“I’ll take you back to the capital after a while. You’ll know then.”

There was a quick change in expression on Nell’s face.

Back to the capital?

She opened her mouth, about to say something but held her tongue after Gideon gave her a look.

The man approached her and took her by the hand to sit her on the bed. He then leaned in to kiss her on the cheek.

“It’s late, let’s sleep. Good night!”

She slept the whole night until the break of dawn.

The next day, Nell took Lucy to Gareth Leith’s office as promised.

Arriving at the same time were Celine and Skylar.

Celine was taken by surprise to see Nell.

“Sister, why are you here too?”

Nell faintly threw her a glance. Celine adorned a proud princess look today, wearing a white dress matched with a jacket of the same color.

Following behind her was another girl, apart from Skylar.

Nell recognized her. She was Celine’s distant cousin, named... Mia Bell?

Mia rose to fame from a D-list internet sensation and signed with Celine’s studio. Her relationship with Celine and some similarities in facial features earned her the title as Mini Celine.

This title secured her openings in the entertainment industry.

Celine was glad to take her under her wing. After all, with an imitation such as Mia around, she, as the original version, stood out in superiority and beauty.

Scoffing to herself, Nell coldly blurted, “Is this your office?”

The meaning behind that was “why can’t I be here if you can?”

Celine’s face stiffened.

They were outside, and for Nell to embarrass her in front of others was putting her on a spot.

Yet, she was not in a position to take Nell face on. She had a ladylike image to maintain in the industry, after all. With many reporters around, what image could she upkeep if she was caught in a public squabble?

Compared to her scruples, Nell was at ease.

She was not a celebrity anyway, so she could do as she pleased.

Skylar walked up and held her hand out towards Nell.

“Long time no see, Ms. Jennings.”

Still, Nell reached out for a handshake.

Skylar was a veteran in this circle. Although she was lacking in moral standing, she deserved respect due to her seniority.

Already at work, Gareth instructed his assistant to lead them to the studio after knowledge of their arrival.

The party of five entered the studio and found the equipment set up.

Two teams of actors were performing on a spacious stage, seemingly here for casting call as well.

Gareth brought a few other staff members along and took a seat in the auditorium.

As the group walked by, Celine was the first to greet. “Director Leith, we’re here.”

Gareth looked up and swept a glance at her before his gaze fell on Nell.

He smiled. “You’re here, take a seat!”

With that, he pointed at the seat beside him and instructed the assistant director at his side to hand over a few scripts.

The statement saw discoloration on Mia’s face.

“Director Leith, didn’t you say the part was mine? Why do I have to audi...”

Before she could finish, Skylar shot her a cold look.

Gareth assumed a scowling face.

“I gave my word to Celine for you to give it a go. I didn’t say I’m flat-out giving you the part. Nicole Block might be a supporting role, but the parts are equally important. Don’t even think of this role if your acting isn’t up to standard!”

As Mia’s face went through a series of colors, anger stirred her to clench her fist.

Celine was surprised.

By right, although Gareth never promised the role to Mia during their discussion, the situation should not be far off from it.

After all, she was joining the cast, bringing funds along with her. It was no easy feat for Gareth in preparation of this project these past few years.

Naturally, he wanted to succeed in this make-or-break moment.

Her eyes scoured the room and finally landed on Nell.

The realization hit her.
