Chapter 576

Spoiled by the President

“It was only after he said those words that I was moved. I then realized that he is the backbone of directors in China and the reason why I admire him.”

Gareth proceeded to repeat Marcus’ words to Nell.

Nell was in for a shock.

It was hard to imagine that these words came out of a young director’s mouth.

He said, “The West has prevailed over the East in terms of science fiction films, not because we want to be beaten but because we don’t have a matured technique and long-term creative ideas. He had hoped to be the first to break those barriers and lead the Eastern science fiction movies into the eyes of the West. The people in the West would then know that people in the East yearn for the universe as well, and are capable of making great science fiction films.”

The entire office fell into a moment of silence.

Sitting there, Nell leaned against the chair without a peep.

Instead of hurrying her, Gareth made a budget list with other required information and placed it in front of her.

It took a while before Nell replied, “You may leave. I need to think about this.”

A five hundred million investment had no place for a slapdash decision after all.

Aware that it would be tough to convince Nell the first time, Gareth did not press further on the matter. He stood up and nodded before excusing himself.

After Gareth left, Nell re-examined the information and carefully browsed through.

By the time she finished reading everything, two hours had flown by.

Tired, Nell straightened her back. She got up and stretched for a bit.

She could tell from the documents that Gareth did pour in a lot of effort into the project, regardless of whether it was to fulfill his best friend’s last wish or to contribute towards Eastern science fiction.

In short, the documents alone proved that it was a doable project.

After much thought, Nell gave Gideon a call.

Gideon was having a meeting at Leith Corporation’s headquarters. Having received a call from her, he raised his hand to stop the high-ranking superiors who were reporting the numbers.

Sitting on a chair, Nell kneaded her brows and smiled. “Did I bother you with your work?”

Under the eye of the higher management who waited for him to hang up and continue the meeting, Gideon replied, “No, I have free time on my hands and was about to call you.”

The higher management, “...”

Nell grinned. “Great. I’m a bit hesitant about something and I wanted you to help me decide.”

“Okay, do tell.”

Nell detailed an accurate account of the project to Gideon.

Before he offered any advice, Gideon asked her, “What do you think?”

Nell was reluctant for a moment but finally came clean.

“It’s a huge risk but it won’t be just profits, we’d be seeing a milestone achieved in science fiction if it ends up being a success.”

Gideon curled his lips.

Without hesitation, he gave the OK. “Shoot it then.”

“Huh?”

Nell was surprised that he agreed to it so soon.

“No, did you get what I mean?”

Gideon smiled; the kind that was doting and confident.

“I understood every word but it might be a success, so we’re shooting it for sure.”

“What if we fail? It’s not a small sum of investment we’re talking about. The way I see it, nobody has confidence in this subject matter, so seeking external investment in this movie is very unlikely. Anning International would have to pay for everything.”

Still beaming, Gideon did not seem to be bothered by this.

“We are doing it for the very reason that it’s a huge risk.”

Nell was confused, unable to grasp the meaning behind his words.

Gideon ensued with a sigh.

“Didn’t you say that if it’s a success, the movie will prove a milestone in progress? Apart from Anning International, who would have the confidence and guts to achieve this milestone? There’s no way of knowing if we hold back from taking risk, even if there was a 10% chance of hope.”

Nell was dumbstruck.

Gideon continued on, “Even if we fail, at least we tried and have a clear conscience, don’t you think?”

It was silent on the other end of the line. Nell took a long time to reply.

Her face lit up unexpectedly and her voice harbored mixed feelings.

“Deon, I’m really...” Nell paused with a smile before proceeding, “I’m really falling for you day by day.”

The man’s eyes squinted in delight by those words.

Back in the meeting room, the higher management, who sat there waiting for Gideon to finish with the call and continue the meeting, were unaware of their conversation.

Nevertheless, they noticed their usually poker-faced big boss turning gentle and loving. The icy-look on his face even beamed with a strange yet gentle smile.

Hiss...

Everyone shuddered all at once.

Gideon stared at him before returning to the call. “I guess that’s it if there’s nothing else.”

Nell nodded. “Okay, so it’s decided?”

“Sure, you can call the shots.”

After he hung up, Gideon returned to the meeting table. With his eyes resuming to its usual aloofness, he faintly swept a glance at the people and took a seat.

The senior executive who was reporting the numbers earlier immediately drew close and continued his duty.

Pretending as though nothing had happened, the group of people straightened out their clothes and sat upright, albeit they were gossiping about it in their heads.

On the other side.

Having been pointed in a direction by Gideon, Nell understood his intention.

Sure, it was a huge investment and a huge risk. Out of every organization in the industry, only Anning International had the wealth and capability in making it happen.

It would be a huge step in progress if they were to succeed.

Nothing could be done if it turned out to be a bust. This move had to be done sooner or later anyway and someone had to take the first step.

Without anyone taking the first step, no one else in the back would have the courage to try their hand. Science fiction would never see the light of day nationwide.

With that in mind, Nell gave Gareth a call so that he would free up his time at night. She also invited the playwright to come along to discuss together in detail.

Gareth was overjoyed.

He was under the impression that it would take longer before he heard anything. It was uncertain whether it would be good news too.

It never occurred to him that he would receive a call from Nell so soon.

On the other end of the line, Gareth enquired in disbelief, “Really? The project is a pass?”

Nell smiled. “It’s not certain but I’m intrigued and want to know more, is that possible?”
