Chapter 649
Spoiled by the President
Mother Katzâs mind was finally at rest.
For dinner that night, the trio went to a nearby high-end restaurant that was famous for homemade cuisine.
Lucy and Mother Katz tacitly avoided mentioning about them running into Natalie in the coffee shop that afternoon.
The way they saw it, the issue was a complicated one.
Not only would Joel be put in a dilemma, but no benefit would come out of it either if they were to tell him.
Hence, it was better not to bring it up at all.
After all, their conscience was clear, so there was nothing to be afraid of.
They had nothing to be ashamed of.
As for Natalie, it would be best if her attitude would change for the better as time went.
It was not as though anything could be done if she insisted to be hostile towards Lucy.
There was only so much one could take after given the cold shoulder despite showing their good intention.
Anyway, there was no telling whether their relationship could be mended.
Lucy was not one to ingratiate herself with others.
Thus, they believed that it was unnecessary to raise the subject.
Yet to their surprise, someone else came forth even with them holding their tongue.
Joelâs phone buzzed during dinner.
He picked it up for a look. It was a text message from Natalie.
Joel had saved Natalieâs contact as âMother Superiorâ.
A message from Mother Superior popped onto the screen. Although the text was short, the tone was not the least bit amiable.
âAre you with that woman now?â
Joel read the line and frowned.
He raised his head to take a glance at Lucy and Mother Katz. The two of them were engaged in giggles and conversations while having their dinner.
As they talked about an interesting event in the past, they did not take notice of him.
Joel swiftly replied to Natalie.
âWhatâs the matter?â
Natalie quickly sent a reply.
âI bumped into her and her mother in a coffee shop today. What? Isnât it enough that youâre lavishing money on her that now youâre taking responsibility for her mother as well? They must think youâre an idiot or take you for a fool and that your money is easy to come by.â
Joel made a sour face.
Perhaps it was due to the turn of his mood as his presence ensued with a change as well.
Suddenly, Lucy felt there was something going on with the person beside her.
She turned around and saw him fixated on his phone with a sullen look on his face. His fingers were tapping furiously on the screen.
Raising a brow, she asked out of curiosity, âWhat are you doing?â
Without a word, Joel waited until he was done with the message before lifting his chin to gaze at her.
The maliciousness in his eyes softened in the blink of an eye.
Putting away his phone as though nothing had happened, Joel let out a smile.
âNothing.â
Lucy frowned.
She knew Joel too well to know that the sudden change of mood was not all in her head.
What happened?
Nevertheless, she was not going to pursue the matter if Joel refused to speak in front of her mother.
There might not seem to be structure in whatever he did but in fact, he had his way of doing things.
She trusted him.
Without probing further, Lucy helped him to the food.
âYou should be eating during dinner instead of playing with your phone. Come try this dish.â
Joel picked up his chopsticks obediently and ate it.
Mother Katz looked at him with a gentle smile. âJoel is always busy with work. Lulu, you as his wife should take care of him more.â
Lucy was not having it.
âMom, I canât do that. He may be busy but Iâm busy too. Moreover, itâs not the same as your era then. Women have equal parts in society. I donât need him to support me, why should I take care of him?â
Joel dared not disagree.
He nodded.
âYes, yes, yes. I can take care of myself. Lulu really enjoys acting, just let her do what she loves.â
Mother Katz gazed at them, feeling gratified yet sorry.
With a smile, she shook her head.
âYou canât say that. I know you young people are into your careers but when you reach the end of life, youâd realize that whatever career or dreams are nothing compared to the people beside you.â
Struck by a thought, she sighed.
âBack in the day, her father and I were so in love. Because her father died so young, so...â
Lucy was unwilling to bring up her dearly-departed father on such an occasion.
She cried out, âMom...â
Having snapped out of her thoughts, Mother Katz forced a smile. âIâm sorry, where are my manners?â
Joel immediately adopted a serious look.
With a straight face, he said, âMom, donât worry. I will take good care of Lulu and wonât let anything happen to her. Weâll grow old together. Please look after yourself. We need you to help out with your grandchild.â
Mother Katz was filled with glee.
âGrandchild? That would be great.â
Lucy was embarrassed by his words. Red in the face, she glared at him.
âQuit the nonsense!â
Who agreed to have a child with him?
What grandchild?
Joel grinned without any further comments.
Just like that, it turned the evening into a fine one by releasing the originally tensed situation in the air.
On the other end, Natalie stared at her phone, turning blue in the face from Joelâs last text message.
The reply she got from Joel reflected on her screen as such.
âShe is my wife. We will support and love each other this lifetime, as like you and dad. As a woman, I hope youâll be able to change your mindset and put yourself in her shoes. What would you think if grandma made things difficult for you like what youâre doing now?â
For her son to call her to account, Natalie was of course infuriated.
However, this was not the only thing she was angry about.
More importantly, it was what he said, âIf grandma made things difficult for you...â
Ha! She wished to be put on the spot but would they dare?
She was not in the wrong in the first place!
It was the Foster family!

She had been married to this household for decades and yet she had never experienced supporting and loving each other.
When was she ever loved?
Her husband slept beside her in bed every night but deep within his heart laid another woman.
She used to think that as long as she stayed true to herself and with enough patience, everything would change.
He would return to her, not just in body but in the soul.
Nonetheless, the truth showed that it was impossible!
His heart was taken by another, which became an inseparable part of him. How could he possibly pour his heart to her and love her?
Outsiders only saw the grandeur and glory that came with being the eldest daughter-in-law of the Fosters.
Yet, they never knew the tears she had to swallow in the back.
Everyone around her was under the impression that she was happy.
Her husband seemed as though he was family-oriented and treated her well.
