Chapter 678

Spoiled by the President

Natalie’s eyes grew colder when she heard Emilia’s words.

As if the powerful punch she just tried to deliver landed on soft cotton, she felt an inexplicable sense of anger and annoyance.

The room was dead silent for a few seconds. Then, Natalie took a deep breath and sat down across from her, abandoning the idea of a verbal fight.

Emilia let out a breath of relief in secret when she saw Natalie sitting down because it meant that she was willing to talk, and there was still hope if she wanted to talk.

Her expression eased a little at the thought of that, and she asked, “Sister, what kind of tea do you want to drink?”

“Whatever,” Natalie said plainly. Her attitude was nonchalant.

Emilia did not mind her tone. She had learned the proper ways to go about a tea ceremony before, so she employed her skills here and brew a pot of Pu’er tea.

The fragrance of the tea permeated the entire room once it was brewed.

She reached out with her long fingers and poured two cups of tea for each of them. Then, she made an inviting gesture.

“Sister, please try it.”

This was a part of the etiquette of a tea ceremony, so Natalie did not refuse the invitation.

She was not worried that Emilia would poison the tea. In addition to that, the fragrance of the tea imbued the entire room, and it smelled wonderful.

She picked her cup of tea up and took a sip.

Emilia’s gaze was fixed on her every move. She asked in a hopeful tone, “Sister, how does it taste? Did you notice any difference in my skills years ago?”

Natalie’s fingers caressed the edge of the cup. She said absentmindedly, “Do you know what’s the most important component about enjoying tea?”

Emilia’s mind went blank as she ruminated on that question for a while. “A peaceful state of mind?” she guessed.

“No.” Natalie put her cup down, folded her arms on the table, and stared at her quietly.

There was a small and amiable smile on her face, but her eyes were filled with indifference and ridicule.

“It’s people.”

“People?” Emilia was a little perplexed.

Natalie said, “Yes, it boils down to the person who brews the tea. If it’s the right person, I’ll think it’s the most delicious tea in the world no matter what they make. If it’s the wrong person, I can’t help but detest it even if she’s gone through heaven and hell to get the tea made. Don’t you think so?”

Emilia’s face turned as pale as a sheet of paper the moment Natalie stopped speaking. Her whole body was racked with tremors, and she looked incredibly fragile right now.

She shook her head and tried to push back the tears that were threatening to fall. “Sister, you may be telling the truth, but that’s not what I think at all.

It’s been so many years. Why can’t you forgive me?”

“Forgive you?” Natalie looked at her as if she just told her the biggest joke ever. “You’re one to talk about forgiveness. Do you think you deserve to talk about forgiveness with me when you have done what you did that year and came back out of nowhere?” she sneered.

Her forceful and venomous words startled Emilia terribly.

Excruciating memories from the past rushed into her mind then, and the rims of her eyes grew red. She shook her head and sobbed, “Sister, you misunderstood me. I didn’t mean what I did that year. I admit I was too young to know what I was doing. I did like Brother Xavier, but I really didn't know that you two were engaged.

“Although I was adopted by the Wright family, I had been living outside for the past couple of years and didn’t even know that you were together. If I had known, I wouldn't have even fancied him.”

Natalie’s expression went cold. She stared at Emilia pointedly. “Oh, really? Then, are you admitting that you still like him even now?”

Emilia froze immediately while Natalie’s gaze remained as cold as ice. Emilia felt like she was going to freeze the longer she stared at her.

She seemed to have realized something, and her lips curled into a weak and desolate smile.

“What does it matter if I like him or not? If I knew something like this would happen today, I wouldn't have liked him no matter what. I shouldn’t even have deluded myself into doing something like that.”

She stopped for a moment as if she was trying to regain her composure.

Shortly after that, with a much more collected tone of voice, she said calmly, “Sister, I know you hate me, but you’re also the one who saved me 26 years ago.

“I know that in your heart, you’re probably saying that you don’t ever want to see me again, but I want to let you know that the reason I came back was not to try to take anything away from you, it’s just that...”

Her voice trailed off as she looked down at her bag and pulled out a folder.

“I don’t have much time to live. This is a critical illness notice my doctor gave me. It’s a terminal illness. There’s nothing they can do, but I’m content with what I have now. The real Emilia Jareau died 26 years ago at sea.

“This Emilia is still alive today because of your kindness. You gave me a chance to live. That’s why I decided to come back. It’s all just so I can pay you back.”

Natalie was taken aback by the sight of the critical illness notice. She lifted her head up and looked at Emilia incredulously.

“Is this true?” she asked in a low voice.

Emilia nodded and managed a feeble smile on her face. “You don’t have to pity or sympathize with me. I’m grateful that I can live past the age of 20.

It’s just that I wish to come back and tell you the truth about what happened that year before I die.”

Natalie’s eyebrows knitted together in a frown. Her gaze was filled with coldness and uncertainty. “What do you want to say?”

Emilia looked at her with a determined gaze. “Sister, Xavier and I didn’t actually do anything that night 26 years ago. You saw us with our disheveled clothes when you came in, and that’s because...”

She did not have a chance to finish her sentence because right at that moment, Natalie’s phone rang.

Natalie frowned and stopped Emilia from continuing with a wave of her hand. Then, she picked up her phone and connected the call.

It did not take long for her whole facial expression to shift drastically as she listened to the voice on the other end of the phone.

She shot up from her chair and screamed, “What? Say it again! I’m coming right now!”

Natalie then grabbed her bag and ran toward the door.

Emilia was stunned by all of the sudden movement. She was a little dazed when she asked, “Sister, what happened?”

Natalie did not have the time to explain anything. She left her with the words, “Something’s happened to Xavier.”

With that, she disappeared from the doorway of the room.

On the other side of the city in the hospital, Xavier lay on the stretcher and was carried into the building with a bunch of people surrounding him.

They sent him straight into surgery. The doors to the operating room were slammed shut, and the lights above them were switched on.

His assistant stood outside the door with his chest and hands soaked in blood. His face was pallid, and it seemed like he was having trouble processing what had just happened.
