Chapter 680
Spoiled by the President
More than ten board members and shareholders were seated on the other side.
Since John and Joel were old enough now, Xavier allowed John to manage most business matters. Currently, he was in semi-retired mode.
Therefore, although a lot of major shareholders were present today, the meeting was chaired by John.
The majority of attendees did not have any objections to the topic.
After all, John had proved his worth and was no worse than Xavier. In fact, he had the potential to surpass his father.
Everybody was satisfied with John. Moreover, Xavier had always wanted to hand the company over to him. Although he did not announce it publicly, everyone knew that John would be the future owner of the Foster Corporation.
At the moment, the attendees noticed a scowl on Johnâs face. They began to question what happened.
Meanwhile, the phones of a few shareholders buzzed. When they pulled their phones out secretly, shock filled their faces.
In spite of Johnâs effort to get people to cover up the news, the accident had occurred in broad daylight on the road.
The media might fear the Fosters and refuse to report about the matter, but other onlookers simply did not care. In addition to that, the majority of shareholders had their own sources of news, so they were informed about the accident as well.
Therefore, as soon as the accident occurred, Natalie called John in time and forbade him from going to the hospital. Instead, she told him to stay put at the company to keep the shareholders in place.
Someone stood up at once and exclaimed with a pale face, âThe chairman has gotten into an accident!â
âHuh?â
The rest of the attendees who had not received the news update were horrified. They stared at the man in shock.
The man who had spoken was a middle-aged individual in his forties. He was also the second-biggest shareholder of the Foster Corporation known as Mr. Hanks.
Now, he was staring at John sternly and speaking in a low voice, âPresident Foster, shall we call it a day? The chairman has been involved in an accident and we canât ignore him. Weâd better head to the hospital.â
As soon as he finished speaking, panic spread across the room.
Immediately, someone asked anxiously, âWhat?! The chairman has been involved in an accident?â
âYes, I just received the latest update. I heard heâs in the operating theatre now and his life is at stake!â
âYes, yes, I received it too. It seems serious, and we ought to visit him. Why are we still sitting here? Letâs go!â
Then, a group of people started to leave.
At that exact moment, John spoke. He was neither panicked nor furious. Instead, he addressed the room in a calm manner, âWhat are all of you trying to do?â
Everyone was startled and turned to regard him. They saw John sitting on his chair with his legs crossed elegantly, staring at them.
He seemed to regard his subjects with a cold yet mocking gaze that sent shivers down oneâs spine. They were terrified of his oppressive aura and dared not respond.
After a while, someone uttered softly, âWe wanted to have a look at him at the hospital.â
âHave a look?â Slowly, John narrowed his eyes. âAre you doctors or are you knowledgeable in medicine? Whatâs the point if you have a look? Or should I say, you donât actually care about my father, but you are just worried that if something happens to him, someone else will end up having a say over this company?â
The room fell into a state of silence as everybody stole glances at each other but did not say a word.
The board member, who had spoken up earlier, Mr. Hanks stood up at once.
âPresident Foster, itâs wrong of you to say so. How could you say that we donât care about the chairman? To put it bluntly, assuming that weâre heartless, we still have known the chairman for more than twenty years. We built the business from scratch in our youth and regard each other as brothers. The relationship we have is genuine.â
âAs the chairmanâs son, itâs fine if you donât visit your father whoâs seriously injured and is lying in the hospital. But how can you stop us from going there? Arenât you making us seem cold-hearted and inhumane?â
Mr. Hanks had a point. He expressed his âloyal friendshipâ with the chairman and also hinted at Johnâs ambition.
In fact, if it was inhumane for them not to visit the chairman, was it not even more inhumane of John to do the same, considering that he was the chairmanâs own son?
John looked at Mr. Hanks with a hint of a smirk on his face.
âReally? In that case, just treat it as if Iâm the one making you seem cold-hearted and inhumane. Anyway, my father has only me and my younger brother as his sons, and he doesnât have the heart to blame us. Have a good rest at the company, Mr. Hanks. Later, if my father does want someone to blame, donât worry. Iâll be responsible for the outcome.â
Mr. Hanks was stunned, appearing upset.
The other board members frowned as well. They disagreed with Johnâs way of handling things.
Nevertheless, John did not care about what they thought. On the contrary, he instructed Special Assistant Jamie, who was standing next to him, âBrew some tea for the board members. Use the tin of high-quality Da Hong Pao tea leaves in my fatherâs office. Some of the members are a bit heated today and I believe some tea will do them good.â
Jamie acknowledged the order and left. After a while, he brought two pots of tea into the room.
Dainty teacups were placed in front of each attendee. Everyone, including John, had their own serving of tea.
John observed the steaming cup of tea before him and took a sip.
No matter how angry they felt, the rest of the people dared not reveal their true feelings.
Nevertheless, they noticed that there was someone standing guard at the doorway, thus it was impossible to leave the meeting room.
Fortunately, Xavier was currently undergoing an operation and was not in total danger. Thus, even though the people in the room were displeased, they did not wish to start a fight.
In the end, they sat down sulkily.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Xavier was still nowhere to be seen when Joel reached the hospital.
Natalie was seated in the spacious corridor. There was another woman beside her. To his surprise, she recognized her as Emilia Jareau.
However, he did not ask too many questions this time. He simply rushed toward them and asked, âMom, howâs Dad?â
Natalie glanced at him emotionlessly. âHe isnât out yet and Iâm unsure about the details.â
A deep frown appeared between Joelâs eyebrows.
When Emilia saw his reaction, she consoled him, âBrother Xavier is a blessed man and Iâm sure heâll be fine. Donât worry, Joel.â
