Chapter 712

Spoiled by the President

After all, she only had breakfast in the morning and had been through a great ordeal the whole day. Judging by the darkening sky and the torch in the woman’s hand, Nell knew that it was already nightfall.

Naturally, she was starving.

So, she licked her lips bashfully and patted her rumbling tummy. “Is that alright with you?”

“Of course it’s alright! There’s already food available, come! If you can get out of bed on your own, I’ll take you outside to eat.”

Nell nodded. Despite the aches in her whole body, she forced herself to get up.

She slowly followed the lady outside. She discovered that the exterior was actually a hall. The hall was pitch black, save for a kerosene lamp on the table that illuminated its surroundings.

The woman led her to the table to sit down. “Hang on, I’ll get you some food.”

Next, she headed to another room.

Nell sat there and scanned the area with the limited light that was offered.

The house was not big and the ground was not flat, nor was it made of cement. The table was made of wood and a dark layer of paint-like substance covered its surface. The red paint on most surfaces of the table had been stripped away.

There was a large shelf beside the table and it seemed ancient, too. Using the faint light, she could make out the random assortment of items and daily objects inside the shelf.

She had not the faintest idea where she had landed, but based on the current circumstances, she was probably in a remote and underdeveloped village.

Kerosene lamps were used by the villagers as well. Perhaps there was no electricity supply here?

Her heart sank when she realized this.

Soon, the woman came out with two bowls.

One bowl contained brown rice while the other was filled with vegetables and a few slices of meat.

She grinned. “These are leftovers from last night. Hope you won’t mind and eat it.”

Nell smiled and accepted the chopsticks. “Nope, it’s good enough.”

Obviously, at this rate, she could not be too fussy. She had never had brown rice in her life and the dish did not boost her appetite.

Still, Nell understood that it was crucial for her to eat in order to regain her strength, especially in challenging environments like this.

Moreover, it was a kind gesture from the woman.

The woman was relieved when Nell began to eat. She sat down on a nearby stool, got out two long needles and a spool of thread, and began to knit a sweater.

Nell regarded her hesitantly. Finally, she asked her, “Elder Sister, what place is this?”

The woman looked at her and smiled. “This is Tres Village and it’s rather remote. You’ve probably not heard of it.”

Nell pondered. Indeed, she had not heard of this village before.

She asked again, “Is this Country T?”

The woman nodded. “Yes, but we are located in the southernmost region, bordering Africa. Lots of wars going on further south, so the people there are in the midst of hardship and suffer greatly.”

Nell frowned.

Bordering Africa? That meant their flight route back to China was incorrect!

Then again, she understood it all.

Someone must have done something on the plane and changed the flight route. The passengers just did not notice it.

As she thought of this, she felt even more dejected. After stuffing two spoonfuls of rice into her mouth, Nell continued, “Elder Sister, I see that all of you use kerosene lamps. Isn’t there any electricity here?”

The woman sighed.

“No electricity? We used to have it, but later, due to the war, there was no electricity supply anymore. A huge explosion destroyed the electrical cables and the power here got cut off as well. For the sake of convenience and to save money, all of us turned to kerosene lamps.”

Nell nodded.

She knew there was no such thing as real peace in this world.

“Our lives are peaceful, not because we live in a peaceful world, but because we live in a peaceful country.’

Nell seemed to have piqued the woman’s interest in this subject, for the latter added with a sigh, “Telecommunication networks have been cut off as well, so has electricity, but it’s fine. We live here in peace and don’t venture outside, and outsiders don’t bother coming here. If there’s anything, we just travel thirty kilometers to inform the village chief at his house, and then let him inform the outside world.”

Nell fell silent.

No electricity and no telecommunication networks.

This came as a rude awakening to her.

After all, she should not expect the presence of cars in an area without electricity.

Leaving was almost impossible.

Without telecommunication networks, she was unable to contact the outside world. She lost her phone while leaping off the plane, and phoning someone else was out of the question.

A deep crease appeared between her eyebrows.

Gideon was back in China and had probably learned of the plane’s incident!

She wondered how he was now. Was he worried about her?

The two children were still at home. Lizzy was waiting for her return to celebrate her birthday.

Nell became more and more frustrated when she thought of this.

Her lack of appetite grew and she could not eat.

After a few bites, she lowered her chopsticks.

The woman chuckled and sighed. “Do you think that our food is too simple and not to your liking?”

Nell forced a smile and lied, “No, I just don’t feel comfortable since waking up, thus the lack of appetite.”

Nell had no idea what sort of doctor she was referring to, but he was probably a barefoot doctor who roamed about in the village.

At this point, she could not be too picky, so she nodded.

“Thank you, Elder Sister. Can I ask you a question?”

The lady picked up her bowls and replied, “What is it? Tell me.”

Nell asked, “About that kid’s Uncle Fred, is he far away from us? I want to see my friend tomorrow, is that alright?”

The woman was stunned, then she smiled. “No need for the rush, his uncle lives thirty over kilometers away from us. Relax, your friend is recovering there and I’m sure she’ll be fine. Once you are fully healed, I can still take you to see her.”

Nell was rather anxious. “No, Elder Sister, you don’t understand, we...”

She pursed her lips and debated whether to continue speaking or not. Finally, she uttered a sentence, “We must stay together.”

In order to escape an assassination attempt, the two of them leaped off the plane. Although they were lucky and managed to flee in one piece, Nell was uncertain whether those assassins would pursue them again.
