Chapter 713
Spoiled by the President
Nell assessed the situation and thought that she was safe, for now. However, she had no idea what was happening on Nancyâs side.
She was a little worried that something might have happened to Nancy.
The woman stopped in her tracks and stared at her for a moment.
She saw the desperation in Nellâs face, so she said, âAll right, then weâll go to Fredâs place tomorrow to take a look. Iâll bring the girl over if itâs convenient.â
Nell immediately added, âWhy donât we go with them?â
The smile on the womanâs face dropped slightly. With a halfhearted smile, she said, âLady, what are you worrying about? We saved you and your friend, and weâre not hurting you. Itâs just two nights. Are you scared that weâre gonna eat your friend?â
The drastic shift in her attitude startled Nell.
She did not know what had ticked her off.
Nevertheless, she was living in her house right now, so she could not come off too strong. In fact, it was in her best interest if she said as little as possible. She had to give up her request since the woman refused to compromise with her.
The woman saw her disappointment and tried to comfort her.
âDonât be sad. Itâs just that the village Fred is living in prohibits outsiders from entering. Your friend is lucky that they were willing to save her. If itâs any other time, they wouldâve not saved outsiders.â
Nell frowned and thought unwittingly how strange her words sounded.
The woman did not give her any time to dwell on that though, for she walked outside right after that.
She was not out for long and returned immediately once she had given her orders.
âIâve already talked to them about it. Donât you worry. Someone will go over tomorrow and see if that person is your friend. Oh yeah, whatâs your name? Iâll let them know in a moment. Itâs hard for either of you to recognize each other without any photos or something like that.â
Nell pursed her lips. To her own surprise, she did not tell the woman her real name.
Instead, she told her a nickname only Nancy would recognize.
âMy name is Little Seven.â
The woman paused in her movements. Then, she laughed. âItâs a nickname, isnât it? Okay, that works. Iâll let them know later. If she really is your friend, Iâll send someone to take her here.â
With that, she left.
Nell remained in her seat and waited for her return after she filled the people outside in on her name.
The woman said to her, âItâs late. You can rest up in that room you were in just now. Anything you want to discuss can wait until the next morning.â
Nell nodded. Putting a hand against the wall, she found her way back to the room without her assistance.
The sky had darkened. Nell laid on the bed and wiggled around for a while, but she just could not fall asleep.
She could hear the hissing noises the bugs were making outside her room very clearly. This was a sound one could only hear if they were staying in a village.
Nell caught the humid scent wafting from the bed she was laying on, and a sense of insecurity emerged in her heart. She had no idea where that feeling came from.
Nevertheless, there was no use for her to overthink in the middle of the night.
She wondered how Nancy was doing right now and if she was injured. Hopefully, she did not encounter those men.
With that thought, she closed her eyes. Her body had experienced too great a shock during the day, so she could not help but fall asleep later that night, even though she did not want to do so. She was thinking that she should keep herself awake to look out for herself.
It was already the next morning when she woke up again.
Nell blinked her eyes open and found herself staring straight into the dirty faces of a group of kids who were standing right beside her bed.
She startled and jumped up from the bed almost without meaning to.
âYou...â
The kids giggled.
This group of children had probably come from the village. They were not scared to see her awake and continued to giggle as they stared at her.
Under their watchful eyes, Nell saw only innocence in their eyes and realized that they did not harbor any ill intention against her. They were most likely just curious about her. She eventually lowered her guard.
As a mother herself, she felt like she had a natural bond with children.
âWhat are you all doing here? What time is it?â she asked.
The kids understood her questions, but most of them did not answer her.
One of the kids who looked older than the rest of them said, âFlora asked us to look after you, itâs...â
He turned and glanced at the direction of the sunlight through the window. Then, he said, âIt should be around 9:00 am.â
Nell did not know what to say.
Is it possible that they did not even have a clock or watch here?
Something tugged at her heartstrings. She knew that poverty existed somewhere in the world, but she did not realize that there were people who could be so poor.
She flipped up her covers and sat up.
âIs Flora the auntie that saved me yesterday? Where is she now?â
âShe went into the mountain. You have to wait until noon before sheâll come back. Where are you going?â
Nell put on her jacket and was on her way to wash her face. She paused when she heard that the woman would only be back at noon.
Looking back at the group of children, she asked the kid who just answered her question, âFlora promised me yesterday night that sheâll send someone to look for my friend at the neighboring village. Have they set out yet?â
The kid widened his eyes in confusion. He nodded after a moment.
âTheyâre gone. They set out very early in the morning. You should wait here. Theyâll be back by noon.â
Nellâs heart dropped to the pit of her stomach.
Now that she thought about it, it was really strange to have a group of children surrounding her.
She could not say anything much about it though. âThen you guys can come with me. Donât just stand here.â
The group of children followed her outside.
Nell finally got the first view of the village as she stepped out of the house.
It was just like how she had imagined it. The morning sunlight allowed her to see the clay houses scattered throughout the village.
Every house had a fence built around it as a wall. They were not really high, so she could see ducks, chickens, and geese running around in it. She did not know who left their cow bound by the side of the street, but a pile of its poo was giving off a pungent smell.
She stood in front of the door and stretched her body with a sigh.
They did not have it easy here.
The group of children did not leave after they came out of the house. Instead, they stood to the side and stared at her.
Nell felt a little awkward and could not figure out why these kids kept following her around.
They stared at her so openly, and their gazes looked so strange and pitiful at once. She reached into the pockets in her jacket but could not find anything edible or something they could play with.
Honestly, she lost everything on her when she skydove, so she did not have anything on her right now.
The only thing she thought she could ask was this: âHave you guys eaten breakfast?â
âYes,â the group of children answered unanimously.
Nell caressed her stomach.
âBut I havenât eaten anything yet.â
âFlora said that you can cook for yourself if you wake up. Thereâs rice in the kitchen.â
Nell was taken aback by the answer, She turned to the direction the boy was pointing and asked, âThatâs the kitchen?â
âYes.â
She saw a house with a very low ceiling. After a moment of contemplation, Nell made her way to it.
