Chapter 715
Spoiled by the President
Flora was tending to the fish she caught when she said to Nell, âI rear every fish you see in the pond on my own. They are meaty and taste excellent.
Big sister will show you how itâs done tonight. Youâll get to enjoy my cooking.â
Nell gave her a polite smile and helped her clean the fish. Then, it was time to start the fire and cook some rice.
She did not know how to start one and had no idea what to do with the wood logs.
That was why Flora did not permit her to try, but she eventually asked her to wash the vegetables when she saw that Nell really wanted to help.
As Nell was washing the vegetables, Flora said, âOh yes, I forgot to ask you this yesterday, but how did you two end up here in the first place?â
Nell pursed her lips. She cleaned the vegetables in the sink and put them in the basket.
After a few seconds, she said, âWe were traveling. The car toppled, and we fell and ended up here.â
Flora spared her a sideways glance. She was watching her with an incredulous gaze.
âOh, that sounds dangerous!â
Nell grinned.
âBut you had a parachute on your back when I carried you on my back that day.â
Nell paused and felt a headache coming up.
Yes, that was true. She had forgotten that detail due to her poor memory.
She could only find another explanation for her appearance. âYes. We were going to skydive, so we took a car up to the top of the mountain. Who wouldâve expected the car to topple halfway through?â
Flora heard her story and clutched her heart in fear.
âOh my, young people these days! They never appreciate life, always wanting to try out all these dangerous and stimulating activities.â
After a moment, she asked, âDid you come here with just that friend of yours? Is there no one else?â
Nell stared at her and did not tell her the truth instinctively. âThereâs one other person. I just donât know where he is now.â
âA guy?â
âYeap.â
Flora was quiet and did not speak for a few seconds.
She was frowning slightly. Nell had no clue what she was thinking though.
It was not like she had worked out what Floraâs intentions were for her. She was just being cautious because she was being targeted by an assassin and was not situated safely behind the doors of her own house.
She knew that it was not right for her to do this.
Nevertheless, she also knew that she should be wary of strangers wherever she was, especially in this village. Lying was a tactic she had to use when she had no idea what she had gotten herself into. She was only doing this to protect herself.
It was a few moments later before Flora managed to muster up a hasty smile. âIf that friend of yours is still alive, heâs probably looking for you right now. Do you want us to help you find him?â
Nellâs lips curled up into a small smile. âSure.â
Then, Flora bombarded her with a series of questions.
For instance, she asked about his appearance, job, age, and family.
The more she asked about him, the more Nell felt her sense of insecurity intensified.
Because of that she inadvertently avoided telling Flora the truth.
In all the information she fed her, half of it could be said to be the truth, but the other half of it was definitely made up.
Floraâs face shifted into an expression of shock when she realized Nell had two kids.
âYouâre a mother already?â
Nell nodded. âYes, you canât see it?â
Flora frowned and made a sound dissent. âI canât see it,â she said, shaking her head.
Then, she exclaimed, âYou people living in the city take such good care of your skin. You look like youâre only seventeen or eighteen years old when youâre already nearing thirty. If you didnât tell me, I wouldâve assumed that you are a young lady who just graduated from college.â
Nell grinned but did not continue the conversation.
The two of them would talk a little more as they prepared dinner together.
The sound of footsteps approaching from outside of the house was heard just when the sky darkened.
The group of children earlier today had been dismissed since Flora came back.
That meant that these footsteps had to belong to the man Flora had told her about.
Sure enough, a man with defined muscles and tanned skin walked into the house just as they exited the kitchen.
âThe man of the house, youâre back!â
Flora stepped forward to welcome him, and he made a sound of acknowledgment. His gaze then landed on Nell who was standing behind Flora.
His eyes brightened a little.
âThis is...â
âThis is Little Seven. She was traveling with her buddies when their car overturned. I found her and brought her back here.â
She led the man by the arm and sat him by the table as she spoke. While she was taking his coat and flinging it to get rid of any dirt and dust, she said, âYou must be hungry. Iâll bring the dishes out right now.â
The man waved his hands and said, âThereâs no rush. Fred and his team are here as well. Iâll have to pay them a visit in a moment.â
Flora paused visibly when she heard what the man said. She looked surprised.
A few seconds later, a huge smile appeared on her face.
âSure, sure. I got it. Weâll eat dinner once youâre back.â
The man nodded, and his gaze landed on Nell again.
It could be Nell overthinking the whole situation, but she thought his gaze on her felt overly intrusive, as if he was openly examining her from head to toe with puzzling sharpness and ingenuity.
Shortly after that, she heard him chuckle and say, âYou have quite the guts to come here for traveling. You and your friend are lucky to have found us, or else... â
Nell caught on to his mention of âyour friend,â and her heart tightened in alarm.
âYou met my friend before?â
The man took out his smoking pipe from behind his back, stuffed some tobacco in it, and lit it up. He said as he took a drag of his pipe, âHow can I not have met her? Sheâs a beautiful lady. Her legs are broken though, and sheâs recovering at Fredâs house now. You can meet up with her when her legs are almost healed.â
Nellâs body trembled at his words. Her heart throbbed as well.
She added quickly, âNo need to wait for her to heal. I can go to see her right now.â
The man narrowed his eyes as he studied her through the wafting smoke from his pipe.
He shook his head after a while.
âNo can do. The village prohibits outsiders from entering. Your friend was an exception. That rule had been broken once, and itâll not be broken again.â
He paused, and his tone of voice turned low and somber. âYou should wait.â
She knew exactly where Nancy was but still could not see her.
How could Nell sit around and wait?
She began to feel anxious and desperate. âWhy do you prohibit outsiders from entering? You already know that Iâm on my own here, so I donât pose a threat to anyone. And you donât have any communication devices here. Thereâs no way I can send any messages out. What exactly then are you trying to defend against?â
The man was stunned to hear what she said.
The tobacco leaves were still burning in his pipe, and a faint sizzling sound could be heard in the silence. Other than that, the whole room seemed to have been muted without any noise.
One could very likely catch the sound of a needle dropping to the floor.

Nell breathed a sigh of relief secretly.
She pressed her lips together, but she said eventually, âThank you so much.â
The man did not respond, but his gaze was filled with mockery as he met her eyes.
