Chapter 716
Spoiled by the President
Nell had no idea what he was trying to convey with that gaze.
She racked her brain and could not think of a time that she had made an absurd request. It confounded her as to where the mockery might have come from.
Her sense of uneasiness was growing stronger and stronger.
On top of that, she still had no leads on the identity of the people who had tried to assassinate them on the plane yet.
An assassin in hiding, and a strangely antiquated village. That was not counting these villagers with mystifying intentions.
This whole thing made her body tense, and there was no way she could relax.
The good thing was that it seemed like this man was true to his words.
He promised to take her to see the legendary âFred,â and they really did go there.
Fred was at the village chiefâs house, so they made their way there without having dinner.
The village chiefâs house was not far from where they were. They arrived at the house after about 20 minutes of walking.
They could see a large clay house in the distance before they went through the door. It was brightly lit.
There was a huge fire outside the house, and a few tables were arranged beside it. Every spot around the tables was occupied. It was obvious that a banquet was happening.
The attendants of the banquet raised their hands up to call for him right away when they saw the man approaching.
âHey, Max is here!â
The man made a sound of acknowledgment and led Nell to a middle-aged man with tan skin and black hair. He looked a little overweight and had a few strands of white hair on his head.
âHereâs Fred.â
With that, he proceeded to introduce Nell to the man named Fred. âThis is the lady my wife picked up the other day, She said she wants to find her friend. What do you say?â
Fred gave her a once-over that lasted longer than it should. He seemed impressed by what he was looking at.
âOh, itâs you. Nancy is your friend?â
Nell nodded quickly.
Fred grinned and waved his hand. âDonât you worry. Sheâs fine. Do you want to see her?â
Nell replied instantly, âYes. Can you take me to her?â
The man stroked his chin. âI can do that, but weâll have to blindfold you if you want to follow me. You should know that thereâs an area not far from here that is always rife with wars. We had enough of it and found a piece of peaceful and secluded land to live. We donât wish to attract any kind of strife back there. Thatâs why we donât allow any strangers into our land.
âBut Iâll concede since you two ladies seem weak. Your eyes still need to be covered though. If we donât do that, whoâs to say that you wonât expose our location once you get out of here? Our peaceful days will be over if that happens.â
Nell listened as he spoke with a thick country accent. She nodded vehemently after just a moment of hesitation.
âOkay. I agree.â
Fredâs smile grew wider at once upon Nellâs agreement.
âThen itâs settled. You can have your dinner here. Once youâre done you can leave with us. I have to go home tonight, so I can take you with me.â
Nell frowned as she was a little confused. âIf weâre traveling at night, I donât think itâs convenient for you to blindfold me.â
âItâs fine.â
Fred waved his hand absentmindedly to dismiss her concern. âIâve brought my oxcart with me. You can sit in it. Thereâs no need to walk. Weâll be there in an hour or two. Itâs really convenient.â
Nell nodded at his words.
It was decided then that she would not go back to Floraâs house. Instead, she sat down, accepted a bowl and a pair of chopsticks from them, and dug into her meal right then and there.
Floraâs husband conversed with Fred for a few minutes and left.
Before he left, Nell turned it over in her mind and still felt a little embarrassed about having stayed at Floraâs house.
She went up to him and thanked him again, entreating him to help her convey her gratitude to Flora when he went back home.
Regardless of whether she was overthinking the whole thing, Flora still had at least treated her well these past two days. Besides, they were the ones who saved her.
If things go according to the plan, she assumed that she would not be returning to Floraâs house after dinner and would leave with Fred instead.
It was a little embarrassing that she would not have the chance to thank Flora in person.
The man spared her a meaningful glance when he saw her approaching.
He did not look happy to hear about her gratitude. Rather, his mocking expression turned more and more apparent.
âLady Little Seven, thereâs no need to thank us. Itâll be good as long as you donât regret it. After all, life isnât easy for any of us. Itâll be great if you and your friend can just live the rest of your lives comfortably.â
Nell froze, puzzled at the meaning of his words.
Even so, the man clearly did not intend to give her any time to dwell on them. He waved her goodbye and left right after that.
Fred called her to his side when the man was out of her sight.
âLittle lady, you donât have to be so courteous. We are all neighbors who have gotten used to helping each other out. Youâll know what I mean once youâve been here long enough.â
Nell squeezed a faint smile onto her face and thought, âIf only Nancy and I actually plan to stay here for long.â
Nancy was injured, but they would think of a way to get out of here once she was healed.
The most troubling thing was that there was no electricity or any kind of communication device here. She gave up on hoping to see any sign of public transport when she saw that Fred only had an oxcart even though he was one of the most respected figures in the village.
Nellâs head began throbbing as she arrived at that thought.
Nevertheless, it was not the time for her to think about this right now.
Whatever it was, she could put it off until she met Nancy.

Nell finished her dinner in no time.
Fred ate much slower though. He was chatting and drinking beer with the men at his table as he ate.
Nell was getting restless, but she thought against pressing him to leave, so she could only sit and wait beside him.
She waited until it was around 8:00 pm before he finally left his table. He waved goodbye to the group of men with a smile.
âAll right, Iâm going. You donât have to see me off. Iâll see you guys next time, next time,â he said as he waved his hand in a drunken manner.
A young man at his table stepped up and steadied him by the arm. He gave him a sycophantic smile. âFred, please be careful. Iâll help you out.â
Fred nodded and thanked him politely. Then, the drunk man climbed onto his cart and sat in the coach.
The coach was not big, and there was a long bench on each side of the wall.
Fred was now sitting on the left side of the bench. He had already fallen asleep because he drank too much tonight.
Nell went and sat herself down on the right side of the coach. The oxcart rattled into motion shortly after that.
The oxcart rolled slowly ahead on the uneven mountain road. The wheels emitted a grating noise as they turned, and she knew just from listening to it that they were moving at a sluggish pace.
This was Nellâs first time in an oxcart. She felt that aside from her prior curiosity, there was nothing pleasant about this ride.
