Chapter 974
Spoiled by the President
Finally, one day, the private detective that Cathy had employed brought back new information.
The detective said that they had witnessed Shaun going into Sallyâs mansion with their own eyes. They had also told Cathy to bring a camera to catch them red-handed.
As such, Cathy drove to Sallyâs mansion excitedly.
However, she did not expect that her car would encounter some problems on the road. There were no issues with the car before she left, but it suddenly lost control once she had reached the viaduct. Then, she crashed into the guardrails and fell into the river.
Furthermore, the river under the viaduct was well-known for being the fastest flowing river in Jincheng. It was infamous for being the most dangerous river in Jincheng as well.
In addition to that, it was the monsoon season at that time, and the car had fallen into the river when the tide was high. How could anyone survive that?
In the end, the car was destroyed. Cathy was also missing.
Nell knew about everything that happened after that incident.
After Sean calmly narrated the incident, he explained, âAfter that, we realized that the private detective had given false information to Cathy. As a matter of fact, Sean had already bribed the detective beforehand. He was also the person who messed with Cathyâs car. He did all of that just to fake a road accident.â
Jean was dumbfounded after listening to everything. She asked curiously, âThen, how did she survive? Who rescued her?â
Sean said calmly, âIt was me.â
He paused and looked at Nell. âAt that time, I was just testing my luck. I followed the river downstream, and I found Cathy by the riverbank. Even though Shaun had called the police to look for her, they didnât intend to let her live. As such, none of them were serious about the search and rescue operation. In fact, they purposely tried to drag the operation for a longer time to ensure that she was dead. However, I wouldnât have gotten the opportunity to save Cathy if they werenât stalling for time.â
Nell had a poker face at that moment. If it was not for her tightly clenched fist that displayed her emotions, others would have assumed that she did not care about Cathy.
Sean continued, âEven though Cathy didnât die at that moment, she was still badly injured. She had escaped from her car by using the last of her strength. I was afraid that staying in Jincheng would raise suspicion. After all, a lot of people in that city recognized Cathy. If anyone reported to the Jennings family about her, then she would be dead for sure. As such, I took her out of Jincheng after rescuing her. After that, we went to another city and waited for her to recover from her injuries. Then, we went to the desert and lived in seclusion until now.â
Nellâs fingers were shaking. After a while, she asked, âWhy didnât you tell me?â
Sean held his breath.
Nellâs eyes reddened as tears began to well up.
âYou knew how much I missed her. You knew how much I had hoped that she was still alive. Furthermore, you knew that I would never tell anyone else that she was alive. Why didnât you tell me?â
Sean lowered his head out of guilt.
At that moment, Cathy opened her mouth.
She held onto Seanâs sleeve and tried to control the quiver in her voice. âDonât...blame him. I was the one who asked him to keep everything a secret.â
Nell was shocked. She then looked at Cathy in disbelief.
Cathy bit her lips.
She did not want to deal with her past. However, she had no choice but to deal with it after being pressured by Nell.
She mustered her courage and raised her head. Then, she looked at Nell calmly.
âWhen I woke up, Sean was the only person by my side. I forgot about why I fell into the river, as well as everything that had happened before. I didnât remember anything about my husband and daughter. It was as if my world was reset.
âSean knew about my past. After I had fully recovered, he asked me if I wanted to know about my past. He was willing to tell me everything if I wanted to know.
âHowever, I didnât know why, but my head would ache whenever my past was brought up. I would experience a heavy feeling in my chest, as well. It was as if there was a rock in my chest. My heart would also feel as if something was clutching at it. It was so painful that it felt like I couldnât breathe at all.
âI didnât know how to describe that scary feeling. However, I just knew that I didnât want to remember my past. I didnât want to deal with it at all.
âIf humans could be reborn, then losing my memories resulted in my rebirth. God must have thought that my previous life was too miserable, so I was given a second chance at life. If that was the case, why would I actively try to search for those sorrowful memories?
âThat was why I rejected Sean. I wanted to lose all connections with my past as I knew that my past was miserable. I didnât want to waste Godâs gift, after all. As such, I chose to avoid listening, thinking, and asking about my past. I wanted to detach myself from my past as far as possible. Then, I would get to live my remaining years in peace.
âThroughout these years. I lived a happy life. Your name is Nell Jennings, isnât it? You are my daughter, right? Then, you would have wished for my happiness, am I right? If that is the case, why are you blaming me? We are living our own happy lives in this world. Isnât that a good thing?â
Cathyâs words had managed to touch Nellâs heart.
Nell had never thought about her motherâs feelings.
To her mother, her past had only consisted of painful memories. She did not want to relive that past. She even wanted to forget everything about it.
She threw away her memories as if they were disposable trash.
Suddenly, Nell did not know how to describe her feelings. It was not pain, but an empty void that filled her heart.
It was as if someone had carved a hole in her heart. However, there was a cold feeling in her heart even though it was not bleeding.
She shivered as the wind began to flow through the hole in her heart.
Nell then nodded her head soullessly and murmured, âI understand. So, these are your feelings. I understand.â
Nell then put down the jade pendant as she mumbled. Then, she turned and walked towards the exit slowly.
She had suddenly slumped her body, as if she had aged ten years. Her straight posture was no longer there.
Jean felt pity towards Nell as she put her arm around Nell. She then advised Nell, âNelly, what are you doing? Reuniting with your family should be a good thing. If she canât remember anything, then you shouldnât force her. Why are you so serious? You...
Nell cut Jean off before Jean could finish.
âAunty, I am tired.â

She then left right after she finished her sentence.
Jean was stunned. She did not know the meaning behind Nellâs words.
She turned her head and smiled out of embarrassment. âI apologize. Itâs normal for young people to have unstable emotions. I hope that you donât mind it. Mr. Donnelly, we shall discuss our business project next time. I will be taking my leave for now.â
Jean then left hastily.
On the other hand, Cathy and Sean were still standing there.
Cathy did not know why, but her heart ached when she saw Nell leaving disappointedly.
