Chapter 980
Spoiled by the President
Nell never knew that Cathy was in the capital before this, but now that she did, how could she let her mother live in someone elseâs territory?
Thus, she pulled Cathy and whispered, âMom, if you donât mind, why donât you stay with us these few days?â
Cathy was stunned and confused. âWhy would I stay with you?â
Nell laughed. âLook at you, how can you be confused? Iâm your daughter. When a mom visits her daughterâs city, where else would she stay besides with her daughter?â
Cathy was at a loss. It seemed like she understood Nellâs words but she was hesitant at the same time.
Sean frowned.
He said in a low voice, âThereâs no need. I know you two mean well, but Cathyâs mind hasnât fully recovered yet. Sheâs used to living here, so it wonât be good to change the environment since it would easily affect her mood.â
Nell was dumbfounded, not quite understanding of Seanâs meaning.
âBut this is Mr. Donnellyâs manor, right? Wouldn't living in Mr. Donnellyâs manor affect her mood too?â
Seanâs frown deepened. However, upon thinking of her relationship with Cathy, he patiently explained, âAlthough this is Mr. Donnellyâs manor, he has set aside a small courtyard for us, so he wonât bother us if we just stay there. However, your Leith residence is big and complicated, so Iâm worried that Cathy wonât be used to it. Weâd rather not.â
Nellâs face sank.
âMr. Miller, I think youâve misunderstood. Although the Leith residence is big, thereâs nothing complicated about it. Besides...â
She paused and looked at Cathy before continuing, âMom, I actually have two children now, and I have a third one in my belly. Donât you want to see your grandchildren?â
Cathy was stunned but soon reacted to the joyous news.
She revealed a smile and looked at Nellâs stomach.
âYouâre pregnant? Congratulations, thatâs really great, but I...â
Forcing a smile, she finally refused. âI donât want to go, Nelly. How about... nevermind. As for the grandchildren, can I see them next time instead?â
Nellâs brows furrowed imperceptibly.
She felt Cathyâs rejection, but she did not understand the reason.
So she pursed her lips and sighed. âWell, since you insist, I wonât force you.â
Then, she handed Cathyâs handbag to her.
âWeâll part ways here. Iâll come to pick you up tomorrow morning.â
With a nod, Cathy told her to drive slowly before walking into the manor with Sean.
Nell and Gideon stood there, watching their silhouettes disappear completely before leaving.
On the way home, Nell sat in the car quietly, not saying a word.
Gideon reached out to hold her hand and asked, âWhatâs on your mind?â
Nell said softly, âIâm wondering how my momâs situation is going to get better.â
Gideon raised his brows.
âWhat do you mean? Didnât you say you wouldnât force her to remember the past?â
Nell sighed.
âI donât want to remind her of the past. I can tell that sheâs happy now, but canât you tell as well? Her happiness is only on a surface-level. The truth is that her mental state is very unhealthy.â
As she spoke, she carefully recalled the details of todayâs day with Cathy and deliberated. âWhen she talks to us, her eyes are always dodging away, which shows that sheâs very guilty and afraid. On top of that, she dislikes strangers, and will subconsciously back away and tremble in fear if a stranger approaches.
âI know that all of this is probably the trauma from the car accident ten years ago, but do you really think that living with this fear and anxiety can be labeled as happiness?â
Gideon fell silent.
Nell shook her head and sighed. âSomehow, I feel that her so-called happiness now is just like a castle in the sky. Itâs so fragile that it could collapse at any time, and when that day comes, itâll destroy her.â
As she spoke, the back of her arm was wrapped in warmth.
All she saw was that Gideon had reached over to hold her hand.
He said in a deep voice, âIâm with you. Weâll help her out of this fear together.â
Surprised, Nell gave him a sideways glance, and then she suddenly smiled.
âOkay, together.â
The two smiled at each other, and with that, the car drove swiftly to Leith Corporation.
They returned to the company and after a busy afternoon, they returned to Fengqiao Villa in the evening.
Nell was in a good mood today because of Cathy.
After returning home, she played with the two little dumplings for a while before she received a call from Jean Leith.
Jeanâs voice was very excited over the phone.
âNell, I heard that you agreed to Mr. Donnellyâs request and decided to cooperate with him?â
Nell smiled. âDidnât I already tell you about this before? Why are you still so surprised?â
Jeanâs voice was ecstatic. âA verbal promise is a verbal promise. Who knows if youâll change your mind? Now that youâve said so to Mr. Donnelly, it was the hammer that hit the last nail on the coffin. Otherwise, if news spread that the president of Anning International didnât keep her word, wouldnât others think that itâs hilarious?â
Nell smiled exasperatedly at Jeanâs bright tone.
All of a sudden, Jean changed the topic. âBy the way, Nelly, that... How are you with Ms. Morrison, your foster mother?â
Nell paused and asked warily, âWhy are you asking that?â
Jean laughed dryly. âIâm just concerned about you. Youâre my nephew and weâre all part of the Leith family. Of course, I have to ask if youâre acknowledging her as family.â

Jean was silent for two seconds.
Then, she said in an awkward tone, âOkay, I know. Donât worry, Iâm not one of those people with big mouths.â
Nell smiled silently and thought to herself, âIf you donât have a big mouth, then no one has a big mouthâ.
However, Jean already knew about this matter, so Nell could not hide it even if she wanted to.
Thus, she could only try her best to explain. Whether or not Jean listened to her was not something she could control.
Nell told her roughly when they would be leaving for Country T and what Jean needed to prepare during this period of time before she hung up the phone.
