Chapter 990
Spoiled by the President
Since Benedictâs men were not the only ones who were watching them, as Gideonâs bodyguards also had their eyes on them, running was not an option.
The bodyguards that Gideon brought were completely different from Jeanâs.
Hers were normal bodyguards but Gideonâs were trained to fight on a battlefield.
The aura they gave off was different from the underground fighters.
It was the kind of aura one would get from a cold-blooded killer who had returned from a bloody war.
They invoked fear just by standing there.
In this kind of situation, fighting them was impossible, let alone escape.
Very quickly, Benedict suggested something.
Given that they were still his men and he could not bear to kill them, he suggested that they all apologize to Jean and break one of their arms to stop them from fighting ever again before letting them go.
Jean was just a regular girl, so the thought of witnessing something so cruel immediately turned her pale.
She was not the kindest person but she had never seen anything like that either.
Following a scream from outside, she asked in a weak voice, âNelly... that... Isnât that too much...?â
After all, the truth was out and Jean stood to lose nothing.
Nell simply said, âAunt Jean, theyâre all fighters who have the ability to bully others. They are also extremely manipulative. Not only do they lack compassion but they also used one of their own menâs death to plot a scam. We came here to figure out the truth and because of your status and identity, youâre safe. But what if it was someone else? If the target was a normal person, do you think they could have walked away from danger like you? Would they have had a chance to clear their name?â
Jean fell silent.
At this point, Nell looked back to Benedict.
âThe strong should not bully the weak. When they do, the heavens will rightfully impart karmic justice upon them. Isnât that right, Mr. Canterwich?â
Of course, Benedict understood that she was just putting him down.
With that, he smiled helplessly. âOf course, Mrs. Leith.â
Nell then turned back to Jean and whispered, âIf theyâre not punished they will do it again, and someone else will get hurt. If you donât do this then the next victim will suffer.â
Only then did Jean understand and so she nodded.
âYouâre right, this is simply too much! We cannot just let it be.â
Nell smiled lightly.
Then she continued, âBesides, itâs just an arm and not their life. If they really wanted to turn over a new leaf they can go to the hospital and then find other work as long as itâs not fighting. I believe Mr. Canterwich is a very caring man who wonât just leave them to starve. Youâll find them some nice simple jobs wonât you?â
Benedict was flabbergasted. He thought that Nell had only guessed their motives for this incident.
To think that she had seen right through his whole personality!
It was as she said, these people had been with him for years and he would never leave them to die. He really could not.
Still, no one knew better than him that these people had been practicing Taekwondo since they were children. Their whole lives revolved around fighting. There was wealth to be found in the boxing ring and it was a way to earn money.
They were used to this kind of life, and now that they could not fight, what else could they do?
Benedict smiled awkwardly. âMrs. Lieth, you aren't just sharp and blunt, but youâre very perceptive about people as well. You even guessed what I was thinking. In that case, I wonât hide it. I did think about that, but I wasnât just thinking about that one aspect.â
He paused and looked up at Nell before he continued, âYes, they were wrong, but mistakes don't warrant death. Iâm sure you agree, if not you wouldnât have agreed to the punishment. But think about this, what else can they do other than fight? If you chase them into a corner like this with no other means of earning money, how will they live?
âDon't tell me that if they work hard enough they can do anything. If they were really willing to slog away at a nine to five job like other people they wouldnât be here, fighting. So after that, whatâll happen? Theyâll likely go down an even worse path and turn into a criminal. So tell me, who suffers the most then?
âIt doesn't matter if they end up here, their life has always been sh*t anyway. But to rashly redirect them will cause instability in society. I know you say this with good intentions and want bad people to get what they deserve, but good intentions don't always end with good results. If more people get hurt in the end, isnât that worse?â
Nell stared at him.
The man before her was skinny and wore gold-rimmed glasses. He looked more like a white-collar worker in an office as opposed to the boss of an underground gang.
She thought that her judgment was off until he said those words, but she was spot on.
He was a top student and Gideonâs classmate after all.
The vision and the insight he held while being worried for other people was not an ability normal people had.
The corners of Nellâs lips curled up, and a smile revealed.
âI understand, Mr. Canterwich. I have no objections to your solutions.â
She then paused for a bit before adding, âBut, I do hope that they wonât commit any more crimes under your watch.â
Benedict immediately became serious. âI promise, as long as I live, they wonât do anything that will harm others. If they do, I will show no mercy and force them to plead for your forgiveness.â
Seeing him like this made Nell laugh.
âWha- thereâs no need to plead for forgiveness. After all, weâre just busybodies who ended up here. The rest has nothing to do with us.â
She turned to look at Gideon. âIsnât that right, Gideon?â
He smiled and nodded in agreement.
Gideon held her hand and looked towards Benedict.
âItâs your life and issues anyway. We wonât stick our noses into it. Since this has nothing to do with my aunt, Iâll just take her home.â
Benedict hastily nodded as he stood up.
âRegardless, I still owe you an apology. My men did something I wasnât aware of and got Miss Jean involved.â
