Chapter 997

Spoiled by the President

After a while, he placed the medicine down.

“Jeff gave you this?”

Vickie nodded.

“He said that only those from the Flinders household have access to this. We gave this stuff to other highly-skilled doctors for examination, but even they couldn’t verify the contents of it, let alone replicate it.”

The weight was visible between Vickie’s brows.

Sean nodded. “Of course, they can’t replicate it. It’s not a medicine but the fruit of a plant that goes by the name of Money Bead!”

These words left everyone dumbstruck.

“Money Bead? What’s that?”

Sean faintly answered, “It’s a rare poisonous plant. It’s said that the plant grows in extreme cold and dry areas, normally in close proximity to graves, but I’ve only read about it in books and reference materials. I’ve never seen one in real life.”

The color drained from Nell’s face. “It’s not sold in the market?”

Sean took a glance at her and coldly smirked. “Sold? I’d have thought it’s extinct if I didn’t see one today. Who’s selling it?”

Nell’s chest tightened.

Gregory solemnly chimed in, “It can only mean that Jeff has the plant if he’s able to provide one. At worst, I’ll charge over there with my men and snatch a twig or two.”

Sean shook his head. “It’s no use. It’s troublesome to nurture this plant. It should remain where it is growing. If it leaves its soil, the plant will wither in a second. It’d be pointless even if you get your hands on one.”

Everyone fell silent at Sean’s words.

Pursing her lips, Vickie took a while before forcing a smile. “Don’t bother with it then if that’s the case.”

Gregory’s brows were caught in a knot.

After relaying the information, Sean took Cathy along and departed.

The room resumed its silence. The lot remained in their individual seats without a word.

A long while later, Gideon broke the crippling silence, “Don’t be discouraged despite Uncle Miller’s words. Fortunately, Jeff is still negotiating with you.

Should we get hold of the Arcane Jade in full, we don’t have to change for the medicine if worse comes to worst, and wecan instead opt for a few Money Beads. I trust he won’t refuse.”

Nell nodded. “He has his eyes mainly on the Arcane Jade. It doesn’t really matter to him whether Vickie’s dead or alive, so you don’t have to be overly concerned about it.”

Gregor threw her a glance without saying a word.

Vickie, on the other hand, smiled. “I know. Don’t worry about me. Let’s go with that. There are a lot of elders in the Flinders family, and I haven’t seen anyone suffering a premature death. I believe that all will be well as long as we get our hands on the Money Bead.”

Everyone gave a nod. With that, they went their separate ways.

Once Gregory and Vickie were gone, Nell asked in concern, “Gideon, I have a feeling that something doesn’t add up.”

Helping her to the bed, he took a seat and kneaded her legs after walking all day long.

“What doesn’t add up?”

“It’s such a rare medicinal plant, yet it can only be found in the possession of Jeff? You and I know that the supposed rise from the dead effect of the Arcane Jade is only a deceiving lie. I don’t think that Jeff Flinders is stupid enough to believe this. Yet, why is he fixated on retrieving it?”

Gideon was quiet for a while before faintly replying, “This must be the selfishness and greed of human nature!”

He paused and added, “The more one possesses, the more they want to have more. However, once riches reach a point that isn’t enough to satisfy their desire, they will seek out ways in other aspects such as longevity or miracles.”

He scoffed coldly, “As a matter of fact, he’s only fooling himself. Jeff might know it’s a fake, but what if there’s a tiny bit of hope that it might be true?

He’s reluctant to let go of that tiny bit of hope, so he magnifies the prospect in his mind, firmly believing it to be true before he goes to lengths in pursuit of it. At the end of the day, he merely found himself a faith to believe in.”

Taken aback, Nell burst into laughter. “What does this have to do with faith?”

Gideon mildly answered, “I guess you haven’t heard about this. Humans living in this world are always after something to believe in or something to be in pursuit of in order to live a fruitful life, and this rings true with people like Jeff in particular, who are extremely intelligent and confident. Jeff presides over the Flinders household, and the Flinders are in control of at least a third of the world’s assets. In other words, Jeff is at the helm of a third of the world’s assets.

“With such wealth, money no longer piques his interest. You can tell he’s an ascetic as though he’s detached from worldly desires, but if that were the case, why does he still want to live? There should be nothing more to seek in this world. Hence, he must be hung up with another fascination. It could be immortality, resurrection, or something else. In short, there’s no hope without setting sights while the absence of hope draws no difference between living and dying like an empty vessel of flesh just walking the earth.”

Sure enough, Nell had never encountered such a theory. She shook her head. “What a nutjob.”

Gideon curled his lips.

Struck by a thought, she leaned in and asked him with a smile, “Come to think of it, you seem to be rich as well. What is your faith?”

As the man’s motion came to a standstill, he cocked his eyes at her. Gideon had rather profound eyelids, similar to two whirlpools that were about to suck her in. He said in a gruff voice, “You.”

Nell was stunned.

The man repeated himself, “You are my faith. I will be with you as long as you’re still here on earth. I will immediately follow your footsteps should one day you leave this earth, and we will be together our whole lifetime, no matter if it’s in life or in death.”

Nell was blown away. What meant to be a joke was responded with forethought in return.

Gazing at his straight face, for some reason, she felt a lump in her throat and tears began to flow uncontrollably.

“Gideon, darn you!”

Amidst her sobs, she swung her fist to pound him.

With a smile, Gideon pulled a tissue, and cupping her face, he gently wiped her tears away. He then soothed her in a soft voice, “Oh, darling, don’t cry. The baby is going to laugh at you.”

“He wouldn’t dare.” With her eyes meeting his, her tears gave way to laughter. “He can laugh at anyone but me. I’m his mother.”

“Yes, yes, yes. We won’t laugh at you. Oh, darling, let me rub your feet.”

The next day, they planned to set out to return to the capital.

Prior to their departure, Nell and Gideon looked for Gregory and the party to get a clearer idea about their next plan.

Gregory had obtained intel that a piece of land had been dug out of an ancient tomb around here, but the place was under high surveillance.

Although they were unable to gain access there for now, they were still figuring a way out.
