Chapter 35
Back to the Past: Breaking the Love Spell
âWhatâs 30 thousand dollars? Last year, a player sold a piece of equipment for over 200 thousand
dollars! That was equivalent to a luxury mansion!â
âWow, are things in the game really worth that much?â Gordon felt like his worldview was about to
collapse
âTheyâre valuable, but itâs like playing the lottery. Iâve been playing since 2001 and havenât made any
money. Gordon, youâd better forget about making money in the game while you can!â
âI was just asking casually. Iâm almost 40 years old. Where would I find the time to play games?â
Gordon laughed.
âOh, Gordon, where are you working now? Are they still hiring? I think I might be laid off soon!â
Gordon pretended to cough. âLetâs discuss that later, I have something to attend to. Iâll hang up now!â
With that, he promptly ended the call.
Gordon didnât want Hilda to know about his layoff until he found another stable job.
Hilda stared suspiciously at Gordon and asked, âWhatâs with this âtalk about it later? Do you have a
mistress outside?â
Gordon didnât react as explosively as Hilda had earlier. Instead, he grinned and replied, âSeems like
you still have high expectations of me. Do you think Iâm capable enough to find a mistress?
Hilda scoffed, âYouâre hopeless. Youâre not even as capable as our son. Can you earn these 20
thousand.
dollars?â
if my son
Gordon glanced at the 20 thousand dollars on the table and said solemnly, âLike father, like son, If
is capable, it only proves his old man is capable too!â
âYour skin is as thick as armor,â Hilda scolded, albeit with a smile.
At noon, Hilda woke Carlisle up for lunch.
Meanwhile, at the dining table, Gordon received a call from Gerard.
Gerard had decided to come to the county at the end of the month for his daughterâs graduation
banquet.
âDid Kellyâs SATs results come out already?â
Ts just ended yesterday. Shouldnât the results take longer to come out?â Gordon asked, puzzled an
arprised.
âHer uncle works in the Education Bureau. It wasnât hard to check the results!â Gerardâs tone was filled
with pride.
âWhatâs her score?â Gordon asked with a smile.
âShe scored 1225, just five points shy of making it into Riverland University!â Gerard sighed.
Chapte 35
On the surface, it seemed disappointing. But, in reality, this score was enough to stimulate Gordon.
A score of 1225 was sufficient for various Tier 2 universities. It could even secure her a spot in some
lowerâtier Tier 1 universities.
Gordon lamented, âWhat a shame! Only five points away!â
Despite his strained relationship with Gerard, Kelly was still his niece.
Gordon couldnât help but, feel a tad sorry for her missing out on Riverland University by just five points.
Gerard interpreted Gordonâs reaction as gloating. He remarked, âWeâll have plenty of summer job
openings at my construction site this year. Should I have Carl come over for some work experience?â
Gordonâs expression turned grim instantly. âNo need. My sonâs scores wonât be lower than your
daughterâs!
Gerard chuckled softly. âItâs good to be confident. But you know Carlisleâs grades better than anyone.
Listen to me. Donât push him to retake the exam if he doesnât pass.
âSuccess in education hinges on talent. Without talent, even three years of repeating wonât help. Itâs
better for him to start working early and earn money!â
âMy family matters are none of your business, Iâm hanging up!â Gordon exclaimed angrily, about to end
the call.
Initially, he had considered asking Gerard to use his connections to check Carlisleâs scores. However,
after hearing Gerardâs words, he felt too embarrassed to request his assistance.
âHold onâ¦â
âIs there anything else?â
âIâm planning to invite some of the elders from the village to the graduation banquet at the end of the
month. Can you help me with that?â
âIâm busy with work. I donât have time,â Gordon replied in a lukewarm tone.
Help him with it?
Gerardâs request seemed like a blatant attempt to stir up gossip among the village elders.
Gerard wanted to say more, but Carlisleâs voice interrupted from the other end. âUncle Gerard, my
dadâs tied up with preparations for my graduation banquet. He really canât spare any time!â
nded the call before Gerard could respond.
Gordon took a sip of white wine and slammed the glass onto the table.
âThat idiot! Heâs deliberately arranging Kellyâs graduation banquet in the county. He even invited all
those village elders. Heâs clearly alming to embarrass us!â
Hildaâs expression mirrored Gordonâs displeasure, The village elders were notorious gossipers. Theyâd
surely gossip about their family if they attended Gerardâs banquet.
Unless Carlisleâs scores surpassed Kellyâs and got accepted into a Tier 1 university.
Carlisle enjoyed his roast chicken with a smile. âWho knows whoâll end up humiliated then!â
Seeing his sonâs confidence, Gordon refilled his glass. âExactly. What if my son gets into Riverland
University?â
Despite his words, Gordon harbored doubts deep down.
