Chapter 40
Winning Her Heart Back
Chapter 40 Climbing the Ranks.
The HR representativeâs words werenât a threat but facts
Previously, there had been news about how a project manager had contacted another company near the end of his employment with his current company, ready to switch jobs the moment his contract ended.
The manager faced a lawsuit for dereliction of duty, which had led to significant financial harm to the company. The company had done this on purpose to screw over the manager. The case went on for two
years
Even though the manager was deemed not guilty of his charges, all his efforts were wasted, and
ultimately, his reputation was ruined for good.
Emelie responded, âI know what I need to do.â
She parted ways with the representative after dinner. When she went to the washroom, she happened to overhear the conversation between two servers outside.
âDid you see the woman who was beside Mr. Middleton? She seemed quite cunning
âYeah, I did, I think sheâs Mr. Middletonâs secretary. She keeps on topping his glass up as if she canât wait
to get him drunk.
The other server said, âOf course, she canât wait. How else could she sleep with him? Women nowadays
are something..
âShh! Come on, we still need to get the wines out.â
Emelie left the cubicle after the servers were gone. She washed her hands before drying them.
Considering what the HR representative had mentioned earlier, along with the information revealed by the
servers, she decided to head to Williamâs private room.
The door had been left open. Emelie pretended to walk by and peered in.

The secretary was sitting beside William, the latter who was somewhat drunk now. His eyes were hazy, and a faint smile surfaced on his lips when he spoke to the clients.
The moment he set down his wine glass, his secretary filled it to the brim for him again. William immediately picked it up and drank some more.
William never usually drank so much when he was working. He was probably doing so because he was in a bad mood today. He drank shot after shot of alcohol every single time the clients toasted him.
When the clients took out their agreement for William to sign, they handed him a pen, which the secretary helped tighten his grip around.
Emelie was taken aback,
Were they scheming against William all at once?
Luckily, William set the pen down in the next second. He said flatly, âIâve already made my terms clear, Mr. Ramsey. Why donât you take more time to consider it if you havenât already?â
Emelie heaved a sigh and left the hallway.
She went outside the restaurant and strolled around by the road. Williamâs clients soon exited and left in
their respective cars.
Meanwhile, William and his secretary exited last, the latter holding the former up.
Though Williamâs footsteps were still sturdy, his eyes were slightly bloodshot. He still looked fine whenever he drank. But if his cheeks were flushed, chances were he was extremely wasted.
The secretary helped William get into his car before joining him.
Supposedly, Emelie shouldâve left by now. But she felt uneasy when she recalled how the secretary had actively assisted the client in making William sign the contract.
If William discovered that Emelie was standing outside their room earlier without stepping in to save him
from being schemed against, would he take legal action against her?
Emelie stiffened.
She suddenly realized she didnât trust William that much.
Emelie had witnessed how William tackled his enemies in the past three years of working for him. She subconsciously knew that if she pissed William off, he wouldnât let her go easy either.
William hadnât the least bit of feelings for Emelie even though theyâd been together for three years. On the
other hand, Emilie hadnât fallen irrevocably in love with him yet. She was still cautious of William.
Emelie took a deep breath, feeling uneasy.
In the end, she still got into a taxi and said to the driver, âFollow the car ahead, sir.â
The driver asked knowingly, âWhat happened? Is your husband cheating on you?â
Emelie was taken aback. âNo.â
âYour boyfriend, then.â
âNoâ¦â
The driver grew cautious. Then why are you following them? Are you a stalker?â
Emelie paused before saying truthfully, âMy boss is inside that car.
The driver then started the car and said, âHe sure looks like he owns a company. Young women like you could never hope to win over someone like them. He most likely has plenty of other girlfriends. You donât need to take your relationship so seriously.â
Emelie said in exasperation, âPlease just watch the road, sir.â
âOh, Iâve driven on this road a thousand times. Thereâs a hotel just after the turn in front. Your boss is likely
