My Greatest Escape

"I would do anything for you."

"Sweetheart."

"Baby."

"God, I love you."

"I can't keep this in me any longer. I am in love with you."

Lies. They were fucking lies.

When the elevator came to a stop on the main floor, people entered as I clawed myself off of the floor and walk through the lobby.

"Maya, dear. Where are you going?" I ignore her words and head outside.

I can't do this. I tried to, but he's moved on. He deserves to move on and I'm not going to affect his chances at being happy.

I reach my car and I freeze when I see Kol standing there. I slowly walk over to him and stay silent as he looks down at me.

"Maya...." His hand reached up to my face, but then quickly retracts it.

"What are you doing here?" he asks.

I swallow the lump in my throat. There are so many things that I want to say. So many things I need him to know. But there was only one thing I could manage to fathom.

"So, you've moved on?" My throat feels dry and my voice is cracky as I speak.

Kol's expression of lingering quickly swifts into a pot of anger. "Is that seriously what you want to say to me? After a year of ignoring me?"

My breath hitches. I know what I want to say, but I cannot say it. I cannot physically voice out the words.

"Is she a friend?" I ask again. Kol rolls his eyes. "I-I came down here because I thought you would've wanted to...I don't know, talk after I told you I loved you and you left me."

"I'm sorry for leaving," I whisper.

"It took you a year to figure that out? You took my heart, my soul, and my being and twisted it into your web. You filled it with your personality and put me under your spell. I fell for you and you ripped my heart out of my chest like it was nothing," he shouted. "I loved you and you left me."

Tears are streaming down my face as he tries his best to stop looking at me. But, he can't. He wipes the tears from my right cheek.

"I...." I built up all this courage to come and face him and I can't even manage to say it to him.

"I missed you," I finally manage to claw out of my throat.

Kol's breath hitches and he drops his forehead to mine. "Sweetheart, don't say things you don't mean."

I sniffle and hold back a cry. "I do mean it. I promise."

"You remember what you told me about promises?" he muses.

I silently sob in his arms. "I'm so sorry, Kol. You don't deserve it. You don't deserve any of it. I don't deserve you. It's a good thing you moved on. She's beautiful. She probably wouldn't like you holding me like this."

He doesn't respond. His breathing matches mine. "Come back. To my apartment."

I smile small and shake my head. "I c-can't."

His arms run over my arms. "Please, baby. Come back for me."

I sigh and give in as he leads me back to his apartment, hand in hand. Meredith smirks as we pass her.

He unlocks his apartment and I enter it. I see the beautiful girl in the kitchen making dinner. She turns around at the sound of us coming through.

"Koly! You're back." she beams and then her eyes fall to me. More like they fall to our hands interlocked with each other. I watch as annoyance flares in her eyes, but her bright smile makes it almost impossible to ignore. Almost. I quickly retract my hand from Kol.

"Maya, this is Neveah. Neveah, this is Maya," Kol introduces and then walks to the kitchen. I stay back by the door and Kol looks back at me. "You coming?"

Do I really want to have a sit-down with Kol and his girlfriend? Not really. Come back for me.

I reluctantly walk to a barstool and have a seat. Neveah turns to me. "I hope you're hungry, darling. I made pasta."

Kol comes up beside her and she kisses him on the cheek. "Nae, how many times have I told you to not touch my pots? I would prefer to cook instead."

"I know that I've burnt you on quite a few meals, but I promise my world-famous pasta is worth it," she remarks.

"That's what you said about your lasagna. And your potpie and even your pizza. It was like a spoon of salt a bite," he jokes.

"Okay, but I know this pasta will be great. I've gotten countless 10/10 reviews," she replies.

"Yeah, from your parents who are scared to hurt your feelings."

I watch as they go back and forth with their banter. I get it. She's pretty, probably smart, fashionable, and that British accent is to die for.

She looks around his age and is completely sure of what she wants. Confident without the approval of getting men to grow her ego.

What I wished could be.

Knowing that I was able to get men and trap them under my spell gave me a boost of confidence that inflated my ego.

After Kol, my confidence in myself was non-existent.

"Maya," Kol says, his voice snapping me out of my thinking. "You hungry? I can order Sambrino's."

Our favorite.

I smile and shake my head yes. "Don't worry," he says. "I already know what you want."

I smile down at my hands and try my best to hide my blushing face.

"So, Maya. You just show up here out of the blue. Tell me about yourself," Neveah prompts. "Besides being unbelively pretty, what else is there to you?"

Was it just me or did that feel like a dig? Was there anything else to you Maya besides being pretty?

"How'd you and Kol meet?" she asks, when I don't respond.

So she doesn't know our history? Or is she just testing me to see if I would lie?

"Uh...we met at a club?" I say, flatly.

"Oh really?" she leans in closer and perches her hand against her chin. "What club?"

I shrug. "I don't really remember. It was so long ago."

"Really? I've been friends with Kol for about 8 months and I've never seen you. He's never even mentioned you. Are you guys not close?" she ponders.

I look down at my hands again. "Not like we used to be."

"Were you guys like dating or something? I can't imagine a stud like Kol and a pretty flower like you being just friends."

"Isn't that you and Kol though? Pretty girl. Handsome guy. Great friends." I give her a dazzling smile and she gives me a tight one in return.

I've struck a nerve.

Kol comes back from the living room with his phone. "I ordered the food. You guys wanna put on a movie?"

Dinner and a movie? I kind of just want to get out of here. I need to get out of here. Desperately.

"I would love to," Neveah beams. "What about you, love?"

I turn to her. Her eyebrow is slightly arched in silent victory. She's putting me to the test.

But, I am Maya motherfucking St. Martin. I can handle a fucking test.

"Sure. But, I'm picking the movie."
