Chapter 28
I’ll Be The Warrior’s Mother
Yelena deliberately excluded Duke Mayhard from the meal.
If her husband was present, she would be distracted, and it would be challenging to observe Incan properly.
Yelena kept her eye on Incan while trying to make her gaze as discreet as possible.
âWhy are you upset? Because the Duke isnât here?â
âWhat? No, no. How could  Iâ¦â
Incan hurriedly shook his head. He scratched the back of his neck as if he was ashamed to have reacted seriously to the joke.
An action that made him look like an innocent young man.
âI mustnât be fooled,â Yelena thought, looking at Incan with suspiciously. âIt might be a thoroughly calculated action.â
Yelena, who hoped Incan was a bad guy, was ready to interpret every one of his actions in a biased manner.
The meal proceeded calmly.
Then, there was a small accident in the middle of it all.
Clink!
âAh!â
âOh, Iâm sorry. Are you hurt?â
âAh, no. Itâs my faultâ¦â
A maid carrying food accidentally bumped into Incanâs arm and dropped a plate on the floor.
There was a loud noise, and the floor was now dirty.
Incan spoke gently to the restless maid as though she was a child.
âNo. I should have been more careful. Itâs my fault.â
The maid blushed slightly as she cleaned the dirty floor and stepped back.
As Yelena looked at the reddened maidâs face, she suddenly noticed a new fact about Incanâs appearance.
âHe has a fine physique.â
Incan was rather handsome.
He wasnât a glamorously handsome man who caught the eyes of people wherever he went, but his looks would never bring him a bad reputation.
âWhich is even more suspicious.â
The more vicious the criminal, the more likely they were to have a good appearance.
With a favorable appearance, they could commit a crime more easily than others since their opponent can become careless and favor them.
Yelena somehow settled on this plausible conclusion.
âI feel this every time I come here, but the chef is excellent.â
âReally?â
âI am envious of Your Excellencyâs ability for choosing such a skillful chef.â
âWell⦠the Duke does have a discerning eye.â
âThatâs true.â
Even though she wasnât the one being praised, she felt proud.
The conversation continued as the maids brought out dessert.
Yelena pondered.
She had observed Incan throughout the entire meal but had yet to find anything suspicious about him.
Incan made a suggestion to Yelena, who was lost in thought.
âWhy donât we take a short walk after the meal?â
âOkay.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
After completing the meal, Incan and Yelena went to the garden.
Once they arrived in the garden, Yelena sparked a conversation.
âIncan, you said you were visiting the castle to deliver medicinal herbs.â
âYes, Madam.â
âIsnât it cumbersome to travel such a long way?â
âItâs fine. Iâm doing it because I want to.â
âIâm doing it because I want toâ¦â
There were rumors that he gave up his succession rights to his sister because he had no ambition, not because of his performance. Yelena spoke again.
âIt would be much easier if you just ordered a subordinate.â
âBut then I will lose one of my favorite things.â
âAre you saying that you enjoy delivering medicinal herbs?â
âYes.â
âIf you donât mind, can I ask you what you like about it?â
Incan paused for a moment before opening his mouth. âEveryone needs medicinal herbs.â
ââ¦â
âMen, women, young children, the elderly⦠Regardless of age or gender, it can heal peopleâs diseases and reduce pain, and in some cases, these herbs can save lives too.â
A butterfly fluttered around the garden.
Incanâs eyes followed the movement of the butterfly.
âI like that. When I think of delivering something important to people, I feel a sense of duty in my work.
ââ¦â
âIsnât it strange? In fact, itâs a task that anyone can do. It doesnât have to be me.â
âNo.â
At the sound of her firm response, Incan turned to Elena.
âItâs not strange at all.â
ââ¦â
âIâm happy for you. Youâre doing something worthwhile.â
â⦠Thank you for saying that.â
