Chapter 63
I’ll Be The Warrior’s Mother
âWhy did he have such a bad fever?â
ââ¦I donât know the exact cause.â
Ben readily admitted and explained, addressing Yelenaâs allegations.
He didnât seem to feel the need to hide anything from Yelena anymore.
âBut once a year, he would unexpectedly suffer from such a high fever.â
âSince when did it start?â
Yelena asked with a stiff face.
The Dukeâs tone had been calm, but the memory of his abuse couldnât be easily forgotten.
Perhaps the body remembered the pain of that timeâ¦
Ben replied as if he had read her thoughts.
âHeâs been like that since he was a child. Even before the dead laid their hands on the master.â
âI seeâ¦â
So it was not trauma from abuse.
Yelena thought about it and suddenly recalled what she had just heard.
âHuh? Wait, did you just say âthe deadâ?â
âYeah, whatâs the matter?â
ââ¦you didnât use honorifics?â
No matter whether or not they were dead, they were the previous duke and duchess. They were even Benâs master during their lifetime.
Ben snorted.
It was the first emotional reaction from the butler that Yelena had ever witnessed.
âI only use honorifics to those who are qualified and fulfill their duties as my master. Of course, I donât speak up to brutes.â
The former Duke and his wife were not even human.
âBen, now that I look at you, thereâs something that I quite like about you.â
âI guess you didnât see it until now.â
âYou know how to joke around.â
Yelena stared at Ben with a renewed impression.
âYou seemed to have changed a little?â
âIâll be honest with you. I didnât know when you were going to completely leave from this place.â
ââ¦â
âIt was last night that changed my mind.â
ââ¦I see.â
It would be difficult to treat her as an âoutsiderâ anymore after seeing such a scar.
Yelena nodded her head.
âLet me introduce myself again. Iâm Ben, the butler of this castle. I look forward to your kind cooperation.â
ââ¦â
âForgive me if Iâve been rude so far.â
Yelena looked at Benâs face that was stained with time and then opened her mouth.
âI think youâre going to be a lot ruder than you have been so far.â
âYou saw through it right away.â
âWell, yes. Be comfortable. Because I like it that way, too.â
Yelena chuckled.
Now she felt that the butler had truly regarded her as the mistress of the castle.
It wasnât a bad feeling.
âWell, Ben. While weâre at it, let me ask you something.â
âPlease speak.â
ââ¦Why did the carriage accident happen that day?â
âIf itâs about the carriage accidentâ¦â
âThe accident that happened nine years ago.â
The former Duke and Duchess of Mayhard died in that carriage accident.
But, it wasnât just the two of them.
The carriage also carried the Dukeâs brother, who was a year younger.
In the end, all of the family members, except Kaywhin, lost their lives in the carriage accident.
Yelena had so far assumed that the incident was just an unfortunate accident caused by bad luck.
However, after learning of the former ducal couple last night, her thoughts changed.
âIt wasnât just an accident, was it?â
It occurred to her that there must be some other truth hidden behind the accident, which the public said was caused by Duke Mayhardâs curse.
Ben answered, his eyes slightly widened in surprise.
âWhat makes you think that way?â
âItâs a hunch. Am I right, or not?â
ââ¦Youâre right.â
Ben seemed to hesitate before opening his mouth.
âA month before the accident, a maid went missing from the duchy.â
âA maid?â
âShe was a very young maid. I think I was around fourteen years old at the time.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âWhy did she go missing?â
âActually, it wasnât a disappearance. She was reported missing, but was actually killed.â
âKilled?â
Yelena paused, startled.
But the real surprise came after that.
âThe culprit was the brother of the current Duke, the second young master at the time.â
ââ¦!â
âHe didnât intend to kill her in the first place. The second young master was very young. Perhaps, out of curiosity, he tried to touch a maid his age⦠Thatâs what happened, whether it was a mistake or not.â
ââ¦â
âAfter learning the truth, the former Duke and his wife immediately concealed the maidâs death. They claimed that the dead maid went on an errand and disappeared.â
Benâs voice was calm as he revealed the disgrace of his masterâs family that he once served.
Yelena furrowed her eyebrows.
It was a horrendous story.
ââ¦is the maidâs death related to the carriage accident?â
âThatâs right. On the day of the accident, the servant who drove the carriage was the dead maidâs brother.â
