My Unexpected Mate: Chapter 49
My Unexpected Mate (The Chosen Saviors Series Book 1)
Gabrielâs POV
I watched Aria and Cassie walk away.
âIs she okay?â Blake asked.
âYes,â Nick sighed. âWe had a small disagreement.â
âWe heard you growl,â Blake smirked.
âOh, that was directed at Gabriel, not her,â Nick chuckled.
âWhat did you do?â Blake asked me and laughed.
âI made a stupid suggestion,â I shrugged.
Nick chuckled and shook his head.
âOkay, enough about us,â I said and sat down on the couch. âWe need to talk about Patricia.â
âDo you have a plan?â Jake asked me.
âNot really,â I sighed. âThatâs why I wanted to talk to all of you. We need to find her.â
âI have a suggestion,â Annie said.
âLetâs hear it,â Nick said as he placed his elbows on his knees.
âWell, I have been talking to Jack and Mike,â Annie explained. âJack is an excellent tracker. He suggested that we leave and try to find Patricia while the rest of you stay here and practice magic.â
âWhat do you mean, we?â I asked, narrowing my eyes at her.
âMike, Jack, and I,â she explained.
I frowned. I was not sure I was comfortable with her leaving. She could get in trouble. Something could happen to her.
âI donât like the idea of you leaving with them,â Nick voiced my thoughts. âWe donât know them.â
âYes, you donât know them,â Annie sighed. âBut I do. Iâve known them longer than I know you.â
âWhy canât they go alone?â I asked.
âThey can,â Annie nodded. âBut I want to do something useful. Think about it. All of you have magic. You need to practice and prepare. Mike, Jack and I donât. At least we can find Patricia.â
Nick and I exchanged glances. She was not wrong.
âAlso, none of you are willing to separate,â Annie added. âBlake and Jacob wonât leave Cassie. The two of you wonât leave Aria.â
âShe is right,â Jacob said. âI donât want to leave Cassie and Aria.â
âAnd there is no way we are taking Aria on that trip,â Nick said. âNot after what happened with Calvin. She is the safest here.â
âExactly,â Annie nodded. âWe canât bring Aria along, and none of you are willing to leave here without her. So, we will go.â
I looked over at Nick and he nodded.
âOkay, Annie,â I said. âBut you will call me at least twice a day, so I know you are safe.â
âYes, sir,â Annie said as she saluted me.
I chuckled. âGood.â
âWe need to tell Mike and Jack everything we know about Patricia,â Nick said.
âAlready done,â Annie smiled.
Nick and I raised our eyebrows and Annie laughed.
âWell, I knew you would agree, so I already told them everything,â she said.
âHow did you know we would agree?â I smirked.
âBecause my plan makes sense, and I knew you would see it too,â she laughed.
I wanted to argue, but I was interrupted when the phone on the coffee table rang.
Victor replied.
Nick grabbed the phone and opened the message.
His jaw clenched and his grip on the phone tightened.
âWhat?â I asked, nervous.
âHe said to bring Aria to him in the next ten days, or he would come for her himself,â Nick growled.
âHe doesnât know anything, right?â Annie asked quietly.
âI donât think so,â Nick said and looked back at the phone. âHe wrote: Calvin, you little shit. You have ten days to bring her to me, or I will come and get her myself. Donât play with me. I told you what Iâd do if you let me down.â
âFuck,â I sighed.
âIt will be okay,â Blake said. âHe doesnât know where Aria is.â
âYeah,â Jacob nodded. âAnd maybe we will find Patricia and she will give us something useful against Victor.â
âWe need to be ready,â I said. âI will work with Aria. She needs to learn how to control her power. The rest of you should also practice.â
âWe will,â Jacob said sternly.
âWe should also practice one-on-one fighting,â Nick said.
I nodded. âI agree. I practiced boxing for a long time. I can show you some of the basic stuff. Just enough so you can defend yourselves if needed.â
âGood,â Blake smiled. âWe will be ready when the bastard comes.â
âI am killing that fucker,â Nick growled. âNobody is taking Aria away from me.â
âHe will not take her,â I said. âHe will not hurt any of us.â
The guys nodded, and Annie smiled warmly at me.
âWhen are you leaving, Annie?â Blake asked.
âMike said he would like to leave as soon as possible,â Annie said. âWe will leave tomorrow morning.â
âThat would be best,â I nodded. âWe donât have much time.â
Jacob stood up and started walking toward the stairs.
âWhere are you going, man?â Blake called after him.
âI remembered I have a book about the history of our politics,â he said, turning around to look at us. âThere could be something more about Victor and Patricia in the book.â
âGreat,â Annie smiled.
âI will give it to you so you can read it thoroughly on the drive,â he said, turning back and walking upstairs.
âWill you help me make dinner?â Annie asked us and stood up.
âSure,â Blake and I said at the same time.
âI should check on Aria.â Nick said.
âNo, leave her,â Annie said sternly. âShe is here, and she is safe. She wanted to talk to her friend. Give her some space.â
âOkay, fine,â Nick sighed. âWhy are you so worked up about this? I just wanted to check on her.â
âBecause you two are suffocating her,â she said, pointing at me and Nick. âShe needs some breathing room.â
âWhat did I do now?â I asked and raised my hands in surrender.
âDonât get me started,â Annie said and shook her head. âNow, get up and help me make dinner.â
I chuckled and followed Annie to the kitchen.
Annie was right, though. Nick and I were a little bit over-protective. But that was just because we knew she was in danger. He wanted her and he will do anything to get her. I couldnât help it. I needed to know she was okay. And the only way I could do that was if she was right beside me the whole time.
Ariaâs POV
I donât know how long Cassie let me cry on her shoulder.
She held me in her arms, rubbing my back soothingly and telling me that everything would be okay.
I donât know if I trusted her.
âAri, honey, look at me,â Cassie said after a while. âTalk to me. It will help.â
I raised my head from her shoulder and tried to contain the sobs.
She pulled me to the bed, and we sat down.
âTalk,â she said and wiped the tears from my face.
âI donât know what to say,â I said, my voice trembling.
âDid something happen with Nick?â she asked me. âWe heard him growl. Did he do something, Aria? Because Jake would kill him if he hurt you. You know that.â
I chuckled through my tears.
âNo, he didnât do anything,â I said. âHe didnât hurt me.â
âGood,â Cassie smiled. âBut why are you crying?â
âItâs everything,â I said, fresh tears falling out of my eyes. âI donât even have time to adjust to one thing and here comes the other one. I lost everything in a matter of days. I found out my whole life was a lie. Itâs just too much.â
âI am so sorry, Ari,â Cassie said quietly and took my hand in hers.
âI feel like a prisoner,â I said.
âBecause of Nick and Gabriel?â she asked me.
âPartly,â I nodded. âThey can suffocate me at times. But it is not just them. It is everything that happened. The prophecy dictated my life starting even before I was born. Because of it, I was a prisoner to Grace. Then I became a prisoner of her spell. And she took everything from me when she cast it. Now, I am a prisoner of Victor. And I am a danger to everyone around me.â
âYou are not a danger to us,â Cassie said.
âHow can you say that?â I said as I looked at her. âCalvin almost killed you because of me.â
Warm tears fell on my cheeks. I remembered how helpless I felt when I saw him holding a knife to her throat. I was so afraid he would hurt or kill her.
âThat was not your fault, Aria,â Cassie said, wiping the tears from my face.
âYes, it was,â I said. âHe wanted me. He was there to hurt me. And he used you to get me.â
âHe was a sick man, Ari,â Cassie said. âIt wasnât your fault.â
I sobbed, and she pulled me into another hug.
âI am so sorry, Cassie,â I managed to say.
âYou have nothing to be sorry about,â she said.
After a few moments, I let her go.
âI just wish we could go back to our village,â I said and looked down at my hands. âJust you, Jake, Blake, and me. I wish we could go back before any of this happens.â
âWhat about Nick?â she asked softly. âAnd Gabriel?â
My heart clenched painfully. Guilt washed over me. Did I just wish for a life without them?
I didnât want to lose them. Or Annie. They were my family as well. I love them.
âDo you think you could live without them?â Cassie asked me when I didnât respond.
âNo,â I shook my head and looked up at her. âI love them. I donât want to be without them. I guess I just miss how simple life was before. And you and Jake remind me of that life. You two are my calm and safe place. I miss that.â
âWe are right here with you,â Cassie smiled. âWe are not going anywhere.â
I smiled back at her and took her hand in mine.
âI canât believe we lost all this time,â I said. âI canât believe I didnât remember you.â
âWe will get that time back, Ari,â she said. âDonât worry.â
There was a knock on the door, and Jake peeked inside. I quickly wiped the tears from my face.
âWhatâs wrong?â he asked worriedly.
I guess I wasnât fast enough.
He walked inside and closed the door behind him.
âNothing,â I smiled weakly. âI am fine.â
âDonât lie to me, Minnie,â he said, and walked over to me. âI know when you are lying.â
He sat down beside me and wrapped me in his arms. He kissed the top of my head.
âWhatâs wrong?â he asked again.
I couldnât hold back. I started sobbing again, and I wrapped my arms around him.
I felt Cassie rubbing my back.
âShe is overwhelmed with everything that has happened,â Cassie told Jake. âShe missed us. She missed the way things were before.â
âOh, love,â Jake said and tightened his grip around me. âIt will be okay. We are here now. I am here. I will not leave you ever again, okay?â
I couldnât answer. My chest hurt and I felt my heart breaking into a million pieces. I love them. I need them. But I knew they were in danger because of me. I didnât know what I would do if anything happened to them because of me. I couldnât let them get hurt. But I didnât even know how to protect them. I didnât even know who I was anymore.
âI love you, Minnie,â Jake said quietly. âYou are safe with me.â
I know I was. But was he safe with me?
I looked up at him and sobbed. He kissed my forehead and wiped the tears from my face.
âI donât think you are safe with me,â I said quietly, my voice trembling.
âWhat?â he asked me, confused.
He looked at Cassie.
âShe thinks she is a danger to us,â Cassie explained. âShe thinks it is her fault that Calvin tried to hurt me.â
I was glad Cassie was here to speak for me. I could never repeat all of that. I just couldnât stop crying.
Jakeâs eyebrows shot up, and he looked down at me.
âNo, Aria,â he said, sternly. âYou are not a danger. It wasnât your fault.â
I placed my head back on his chest and he pulled me to his lap.
A few moments later, the bedroom door burst open, and a loud growl startled us.
Shit. Nick.
âWhat the hell is going on?â I heard Gabrielâs angry voice.
âGet your fucking hands off of my mate,â Nick growled.
I tried to raise my head, but Jake stopped me. He placed his hand on my head and gently pushed me back onto his chest.
âNo,â Jake said sternly. âIâve had enough of you two. Like it or not, I was in Ariaâs life long before you. I love her. She is my family. I am done being pushed around by you two. She needs me and I will not let her go.â
I stopped breathing. I was sure Nick would shift and rip Jake apart.
But nothing happened.
âNow, either calm the hell down, or leave the room,â Jake continued. âYou are scaring her, and she doesnât need that right now.â
I could hear the door close, but I knew they didnât leave. I could still feel the anger rolling off of Nick.
Jake rubbed my back soothingly, and another involuntary sob escaped me.
