Chapter 101
Backup Girl No More: Adios to my V-card and My First Love (Brooklyn)
Chapter 11 Chapter 11 Kenâs tears fell freely as he opened his trembling hand. There lay the gold ring.
âThis was my motherâs. It means everything to me. And youâre the most important person in my life, so I want you to have it.â
He could still see Calistaâs shy smile at those words.
But now she was gone.
Ken slammed his fists into the mud, his anguished roar echoing across the empty landscape. But Calista would never return.
The next day, he drove back home in a daze. One look at his sonâs face told Uncle Johnson everything he needed to know. They stared at each other for a long moment before Uncle Johnson spoke. âRemember to complete the transfer paperwork.â
As his father turned to leave, Kenâs hoarse voice stopped him. âDad-â His chest tightened painfully. âYou knew Calista was joining the satellite research base.â
âOf course,â Uncle Johnson said firmly. âShe wants to continue her parentsâ work. I support that.â
âWhy did you hide it from me?â
Uncle Johnson sighed in exasperation. âHide what? I gave you the personnel list myself.â
âBut you didnât-â Ken staggered backward. The list had been in his hands. He just hadnât believed Calista would actually leave.
He rushed to the study and grabbed the list, his heart stopping when he saw Calistaâs name on the first page. If heâd only looked sooner...
âLet it go, Ken,â Uncle Johnson said quietly. âPerhaps you two werenât meant to be.â
All the signs heâd missed came flooding back: the satellite research books, the discarded letters, her growing indifference, the returned ring. Everything pointed to Calistaâs preparation to leave.

Chapter 11 That evening, he heard movement in Calistaâs room. His heart leapedâcould she have returned?
He rushed to her door, only to hear Violaâs voice inside. âGet rid of all this stuff. I donât want to see it!â
Mrs. Brown, hesitated. âBut these are Calistaâs things...â
âWho cares? Sheâs never coming back anyway.â Violaâs laugh was cold. âListen! Iâm the hostess of this house now. Calista is nothing.â
An older womanâs voice cut inâViolaâs mother. âBe careful, Viola. Everyone knows how much Ken loves his sister. Donât push too far, or you might regret it.â
âWhat are you afraid of, Mother? Kenâs completely devoted to me now.â Violaâs voice dripped with satisfaction. âWhen I accused Calista of pushing me and ruining my dress, he believed every word.â
