Chapter 79
Backup Girl No More: Adios to my V-card and My First Love (Brooklyn)
Chapter 4 Chapter 4 I woke to cold, empty sheets beside me as if no one had slept there at all.
With my departure only days away, I resigned from my job. There was no point in prolonging the inevitable.
While handing over my donation bags to the courier, I noticed a commotion across the hall.
Moving men were shuttling new furniture in and out of the apartment.
Through the chaos, I spotted Luke immediately. He stood with his arm draped around Mandyâs shoulders, directing the workers.
It was so typical of him â this attention to detail. Heâd been just as meticulous when we first moved in, taking time off work to oversee everything.
That was his vision of making a home, heâd always said.
Now, he barely seemed to live in ours anymore.
âMiss? Your tracking number?â The courierâs voice snapped me back to reality.
The commotion must have carried, because Mandy bounded out moments later.
âYvonne! Luke bought this place for me because of my nightmares. Weâre going to be neighbors!â
She leaned in with that affected innocence of hers, eyes wide and eager.
Something about her just made my skin crawl.
As I turned to leave, Mandy suddenly stumbled backward as if pushed.
She collided with a worker carrying a cabinet, the corner catching her lower back. Her cry of pain pierced the air.
âAh!â Tears sprang to her eyes instantly.
Luke rushed to her side, concern etched on his face as he tenderly massaged her injured back.
He turned to me, his expression incredulous. âYvonne, stop acting like some jealous psycho!â

Chapter 4.
Mandyâs face went ashen. âLuke, donât. Itâs my fault. I shouldnât have moved in here... Iâm just a burden.â
âHow could you be a burden? Youâre my sister!â Lukeâs voice rose defensively.
My head throbbed. Their brotherâsister act was nauseating.
Lukeâs arm blocked my doorway. âApologize to Mandy. Now!â
Iâve had enough.
âWhy should I apologize for something I didnât do?â
âLike you havenât pulled stunts like this before?â Luke spat.
I let out a bitter laugh.
Heâd always believe whatever version of events suited him.
Mandy raised a weak hand in protest. âPlease, itâs fine. Donât fight because of me. Iâm just clumsy.â
Luke took her hand gently, but his eyes, blazing with anger, stayed fixed on me.
âI never knew you could be so bitter, so petty.â
His words cut deep, each one like a knife to my heart.
