.1 Chapter 8 âKen...â
âDonât start,â he cut her off impatiently.
âDonât worry, I wonât interfere with your relationship with Viola anymore. I hope you both have a happy life together.â
After all, she thought, in two days, Iâll be gone. Weâll never see each other again The next morning, Calista cleared out her room. She gathered all of Kenâs love letters and giftsâevery precious memento sheâd cherishedâand thrown them to the nearby dump, despite her weakened state.
When she returned, Uncle Johnson called her to his study.âCalista, what happened? I heard you fell into the pool?â
She knew Uncle Johnson was fairâminded. If she told him the truth, he would investigate thoroughly. But she was exhaustedâtoo tired to fight anymore.âIt was nothing just slipped.â
He frowned. âThatâs dangerous. Stay away from the pool from now on.â
Calista nodded obediently as he pulled out a list.
âIâve submitted your name. A transport will pick you up in two days.â
âThank you, Uncle Johnson.â
He studied her face with concern. âHave you packed everything? The base is in an arid regionâit might take some getting used to.â
Ken walked in just then, catching the last words. âPacked? Where is Calista going?â
Uncle Johnson glanced at Calista but remained silent.
âIâm renting my own place,â she said quietly. âMoving out.â
Uncle Johnson nodded. âYes, Calista wants her own space.â
Kenâs brow furrowed. âSheâs fine here. Why move?â

Chapter 8.
Uncle Johnson gave him a long look and shook his head. âYouâre getting married, Ken. Someday Calista will marry and have children too. Sheâll need her own home.â
The color drained from Kenâs face. The thought of Calista marrying and having children had never come up to his mind.
In his distraction, his hand knocked the list off the desk.
âWhatâs this? A roster for the satellite research base?â
Calistaâs heart raced. If he found her name on that list, he might try to stop her. She just wanted to leave quietly, Uncle Johnson, unable to bear watching the two of them miss their chance, prompted Ken. âYes,â these are the candidates. Arenât you curious who made the list?â
Ken reached for the papers, suspicion clouding his features.
Calista stepped forward to intervene, but suddenly a cry of pain rang out from the hallway.
Ken dropped the list immediately. âViola? Whatâs wrong?â He rushed from the room.
Uncle Johnson shook his head in resignation, but Calistaâs expression remained carefully blank. âLet it go, Uncle Johnson.â
âI just donât want you two to live with regrets!â
