Chapter 200
His unwanted wife, the world’s coveted genius

âThere was someone you had a crush on when you were young?â
The question caught Belinda completely off guard. She stopped mid-step, her head turning sharply to meet Lucasâ gaze. Her long lashes fluttered in confusion as she asked, âSomeone I had a crush on? What are you talking about?â
Lucasâ gaze held hers, a hint of teasing in his eyes. âForgotten already? When you were fifteen, you liked someone.â
With Lucasâ reminder, Belinda suddenly remembered. Her eyes flickered slightly as she met his gaze. She pressed her lips together before asking, âDid my mother tell you this?â
âYes,â Lucas replied, his hand casually tucked into his pocket. His tone carried a hint of sarcasm as he added, âSo, where is this person now? Why did you stop liking him?â
Belinda regarded him with a complex expression, her thoughts swirling. After a momentâs hesitation, she said calmly, âWeâre still in touch.â
At her response, Lucasâ expression darkened instantly.
They were still in touch?
Damn it.
A storm brewed within him as he tried to process her words. How could she claim to love him while maintaining contact with someone she had a crush on before? The thought burned like wildfire in his mind. Did she want to keep two men on a string at once?
Lucasâ gaze turned icy as he looked at Belinda, his voice sharp and dripping with sarcasm. âOh, impressive, Belinda. Married and still keeping close ties with another guy? Arenât you afraid youâre biting off more than you can chew?â
Belinda, however, remained composed. She tilted her head slightly, a cool defiance glinting in her eyes. âYouâre no less impressive, Mr. Clark, considering you are still in touch with Verena,â she retorted smoothly.
Lucas froze, momentarily struck speechless by her unexpected comeback.
Belindaâs gaze didnât waver as she raised her head, staring at him unblinkingly. She didnât miss a flicker of emotion in his face or the tension in his posture.
Her voice was deliberate, her tone cutting as she said, âBesides⦠Do you even care if Iâm maintaining a close relationship with another guy now, Mr. Clark?â
Her question struck a nerve.
Lucasâ brows furrowed tightly, a storm of frustration and confusion flashing in his eyes. He realized, once again, that his reaction had been far too intense.
After a moment to collect himself, Lucas let out a cold laugh, his tone sharp and bitter. âWeâre about to have a divorce. Why would I care about that?â
Belinda felt a twinge in her chest, a feeling she couldnât quite name. Was it disappointment? Maybe his cold response was simply what she had expected all along. She quickly masked her emotions, shrugging lightly as she averted her gaze. âThatâs good to hear,â she replied evenly.
Lucasâ eyes remained fixed on her, his intense stare saying more than his words ever could. He stayed silent.
As they walked a few more steps and Lucasâ car came into view, Belinda stopped, her voice steady but detached. âIâll head back now. Bye.â
She didnât wait for a response from Lucas, turning on her heel and walking away without hesitation.
