Chapter 502
His unwanted wife, the world’s coveted genius

After all that had happened, Verena was back in the hospital again. Just days ago, she had chosen to leave, unable to bear the whispers and judgmental stares from the medical staff. And yet, here she was again, unconscious and vulnerable.
Lucas sat on a bench in the hospital corridor, his back slouched against the backrest, his legs crossed. His handsome face betrayed no emotion, and his calm eyes revealed nothing of his thoughts.
Just then, Ryan emerged from the ward and sat beside Lucas.
âWhy arenât you inside?â Ryan asked.
âThe air is better here,â Lucas replied nonchalantly.
After a few seconds, Ryan couldnât help but ask, âLucas, what you said to Verena before⦠Was it all true?â
âYes,â Lucas responded with a calm voice.
Ryan turned toward Lucas, his disbelief evident. âYou⦠Youâve actually fallen for Belinda?â he asked.
Lucas furrowed his brow. âIs it really so shocking? Is it that unbelievable that I have feelings for Belinda?â he said.
Ryan nodded without hesitation. âOf course! You used to hate her! You couldnât even hear her name without showing annoyance. How could you possibly have feelings for her now? Lucas, are you sure about this?â Ryan struggled to accept this change.

After a moment, his expression grew serious. In a low, husky voice, he added, âNow, she is the only one I want.â
When Ryan heard this, his expression shifted instantly. He couldnât believe it⦠Lucas was saying he only wanted Belinda!
Ryan swallowed hard, struggling to process Lucasâ words. After a moment, he finally asked, âThen⦠What about Verena? What are you going to do with her?â
At Ryanâs words, Lucasâ expression darkened, becoming even more serious. Without hesitation, he replied, âI canât love two people at once. For Verena, all I can offer is my apology.â
Ryan met Lucasâ gaze, inhaled deeply, and asked, âDo you know why Verena attempted to take her own life?â Lucasâ brow furrowed at the question.
Ryan briefly pressed his lips together before explaining, âOver the past few days, Verenaâs mental state has been incredibly unstable. She hasnât been able to sleep through the night. Even when she manages to drift off, nightmares jolt her awake. Eventually, she had to rely on sleeping pillsâsometimes taking four at onceâjust to get some rest. One day, Verena confided in me, saying the agony she felt was so overwhelming that she didnât know how she could continue living. I was stunned, and it took me a long time to find the right words to comfort her.â
After a pause, he continued, âHer words made me cautious. Thatâs why, over the past few days, Iâve had the family servants check on her often and keep a close watch on her condition. Today, if a servant hadnât realized Verena had been in the bathroom for too long and used the spare key to unlock the door, Verena would have⦠She would have died!â His voice cracked, his eyes welling up with tears.
