Chapter 106
Hitched & Hitched Again: A Comedy of Marital Mayhem ( Elysia and Tarquin)
âAh? This⦠this Isnât quite right,â Elysia hesitated, a frown creasing her forehead.
âNonsense, itâs perfectly fine if I say so. Unless, of course, youâre looking down on me,â Jessamine retorted with a playful smirk.
âNo, no, not at all. Itâs just that I feel⦠Iâm out of my league here,â Elysia admitted, her cheeks flushed with modesty.
âOut of your league? If anything. Iâm punching above my weight with you! Look, because of Corbinâs situation, Iâve been a bit of a recluse these past years. Havenât really hit the social scene, my circle of friends has pretty much dried up. We met because of Corbin, and thatâs fate if you ask me. If you donât mind, letâs be friends from now on. We can be there for each other, lend an ear, share our thoughts and troubles. What do you say?â Jessamineâs eyes were earnest, searching Elysiaâs for agreement.
Elysia found it impossible to refuse such a heartfelt offer. âOkay!â
Jessamine beamed. âGreat!â
âDing ding dingâ¦â
The sudden sound of Elysiaâs phone interrupted their moment. It was Blossom calling.
âYou go ahead and take that,â Jessamine said, gesturing towards the phone.
Elysia nodded and swiped to answer, âHey, Blossom.â
âElysia, Elliot and I are just outside the mall. The place inside ran out of strawberryâflavored milkshakes, so we snagged some from a stand out here. Itâs a bit crowded; just let Emmett know thereâs no rush, okay?â
No wonder they were taking so long; they had stepped out.
âSure thing, send me your location, and Emmett and I will come find you guys later.â
âWill do.â
After hanging up, Jessamine asked, âA friend of yours?â
âYeah, my bestie. We came out together, and she took my other two sons to grab some milkshakes.â
âOther two? You got three kids?â
âThatâs right.
âThatâs lovely. When youâve got some free time, bring the kiddos and their dad over. We could have a family getâtogether.â
Elysia chuckled awkwardly. âWell, the kids⦠they donât have a dad. Itâs just me raising the three of them.â
Jessamine paused, her brow furrowing with concern. âDid something happen to him, or did you split?â
âIt was a⦠mutual parting.â Elysia said, her voice tinged with a hint of sadness.
Jessamine understood the unspoken hardship. âYouâve had it tough.â
A mother knows another motherâs heart.
âIt was difficult at first, but weâve settled into a good rhythm. Itâs not bad.â
âListen, the Huber family has some clout here in Jindale City. If you ever run into any trouble, just let me know. Iâll have your back!â
âThanks, Jess. I appreciate that.â
âI was hoping to take you out for dinner today, but since youâve got plans with your friend, I wonât keep you. However, if you could find some time after youâre done, could you swing by the hospital to check on Corbin? Heâs been doing okay, just starting to resist the hospital environment. He hates the smell of the disinfectants⦠But Iâm not sure about his current condition, and whether heâs ready to be discharged, so⦠I could really use your help.â
Before Elysia could respond, Jessamine hurriedly added, as though afraid of a rejection, âIf youâre busy today, thatâs fine. Just come by whenever you can.â
âIâll try to make it today, but it might be late,â Elysia considered.
Jessamineâs face lit up with gratitude as she said, âOh, thank you, thank you!â
Once Jessamine had left, Emmett chimed in, âI like Auntie Jessamine. Sheâs as kind as you, Mommy.â
Elysia smiled gently. âSheâs a wise and kind auntie. We owe her one for having our backs today.
Otherwiseâ¦â
They would surely have been at a disadvantage. Especially with Oriana around, Elysia knew she would have been at a loss.
It seemed it always paid to do good deeds; you never knew when youâd need a helping hand. If she hadnât helped Corbin that day, she wouldnât have met Jessamine.
And today, she wouldnât have had Jessamine to stand up for her.
