Chapter 164
Hitched & Hitched Again: A Comedy of Marital Mayhem ( Elysia and Tarquin)
the doesnât even deserve to be called trouble! Sheâs so vile and nasty, sheâs a venomous viper!â
âYeah! A venomous viper!â
âWhat do you mean, yeah? Do you just echo everything I say? Donât you have a mind of your own?â
Lowell was speechless.
Lord have mercy, let me vanish right here and now.
Whatever I say is wrong!
Might as well be invisible!
Tarquinâs fuming because he went out on a limb for Elysia, and instead of gratitude, he got slapped, berated, and bickered with, right?
And he wonât even admit it!
Lowell thought blowing off some steam at the Slater family gathering would do the trick, but itâs only getting worse.
At this rate, was Lowell gonna work himself into an early grave?
The vibe in the car was all kinds of awkward, and Lowell, with a lump in his throat, said, âItâs not that I donât have opinions; Iâm just scared to voice them. Iâm afraid Iâll make you madder.â
âSo Iâm such a tyrant that you canât even speak up?â
Lowell scrambles to clarify, âNo, no, youâve got the patience of a saint.â
âIf you canât talk right, then get lost, and donât give me that sarcastic tone.â
Lowell was on the verge of tears as he thought, âSaying youâre patient is no good, but suggesting youâre not would probably get me booted out of the car!â
âTarquin, cool it, will ya? Let me break it down for you. Take today for instance. Itâs definitely Ms.
Thorne whoâs out of line. You saved her, youâre her hero. Instead, she not only hits you but curses you out. Thatâs just ungrateful.â
Itâs like biting the hand that feeds you!â
âExactly, thatâs what Iâm saying.â
Tarquin snorted coldly.
Lowell went on, âBut see, I get where sheâs coming from, too. She was bullied today, nearly got in a real mess. She must have been scared, desperate, and all worked up. When she saw you, her first thought wasnât how good youâve been to her; it was your past behavior towards herâ¦â
âI treated her badly in the past?â
âWell⦠not your finest hour.â
Tarquinâs face darkened as he said, âEven if it wasnât great, itâs her own doing.â
âRight, right, itâs all her fault. You couldnât possibly be wrong.â
Tarquin, mistaking Lowellâs agreement for sarcasm, shot him a glare.
Lowell quickly switched gears, âWhat Iâm trying to say is, regardless of who was at fault before, you definitely donât have a stellar image in Ms. Thorneâs eyes. So after her ordeal today, she took out all her frustration and anger on you.â
Tarquin frowned. âSo she thinks Iâm a pushover?â
âNo, itâs not like that. Itâs one thing after another. I think sheâs getting a bit spoiled.â
âWhoâs spoiling her, huh?â
Lowellâs scalp tingled. âNo one, 1 misspoke, my apologies.â
If youâre not spoiling her, would you be holding her?
If youâre not spoiling her, would she have you this riled up?
If you really werenât spoiling her, Elysia wouldnât dare to throw a tantrum in front of you, let alone slap you.
âI treat her differently, all because of Elijah. If it wasnât for him, sheâd have been gone a hundred times over!â
Lowell nodded. âYeah, yeah.â
Whatever you say is right. But from what I know about you, even for Elijahâs sake, you wouldnât let a woman get away with that. Last time at the bar, it was Elysia who made the move on you, you were caught off guard. But this time, you held her of your own accord, didnât 10:10 you? Youâre the one holding her, and youâre the one getting worked up about it! If it were someone else, say Nola, youâd probably steer clear!
The onlooker sees tho of the game, you might think your special treatment of Elysia is all because of Elijah. But actually? Your body know what I mean, Lowell thought clearly doesnât reject Elysia. A kiss here, a slap there, and getting up close and personal â ahem, you silently.
Lowell canât figure it out. Isnât this what falling in love looks like?
Calling it love might be a stretch since someone is still in denial, but saying love is on the way? That sounds about right.
