Chapter 61
Hitched & Hitched Again: A Comedy of Marital Mayhem ( Elysia and Tarquin)
The pulse reading suggested no major issues.
Things are looking up at the moment. Just make sure not to ruffle his feathers when he wakes, and from now on, he shouldnât be left alone. This suicide attempt is just the beginning; there will likely be more to come!
Tarquin furrowed his brow, troubled.
Something clicked for Elysia, and she dug into her bag, pulling out a small bottle of pills.
âIf he has another episode and the sedatives donât do the trick, give him one of these. It should stabilize him temporarily,â
Benjamin gratefully took the bottle, inspecting its contentsâpills concocted from traditional herbal medicine.
âWhatâs this?â
Elysia hesitated to admit sheâd made them herself, so she improvised an explanation.
âI got them from an old herbalist. They work wonders, Iâve tried them myself. If youâre skeptical, feel free to consult another herbalist.â
âThank you,â Benjamin said quickly.
âNo worries. I wonât be changing my number after I leave. If the kid runs into trouble, give me a ring. Iâll help if I can.â
Elijahâs eyes reminded her of Elliotâsâit was a connection she couldnât ignore. Plus, she owed them a debt of fifty million. She might not admit it with a happy heart, but a debt was a debt. She couldnât pay it back with money just yet, but helping their son would ease her conscience.
Benjamin looked surprised. âYouâre leaving?â
Tarquinâs frown deepened, throwing her a glance.
âYeah, I came to Jindale City on business. I should be done by this afternoon, and then Iâll be off.â
She was pretty sure sheâd be able to get that sham of a marriage annulled by then.
âWhere will you go?â asked Benjamin.
Elysia glanced at Tarquin subconsciously, not wanting to disclose her location in front of him.
âI havenât decided yet. Iâll take the kids for a bit of a road trip before settling down.â
Benjamin pressed, âYou donât have a permanent place to stay?â
âNope, weâve been country living for a while, but Iâm planning on city schooling for the kids. Just havenât picked the right city yetâ¦
Before Benjamin could respond, Tarquin suddenly cut in, âYouâre really leaving?â
Yeah, âHuh.â
âWhatâs that look for?â
âPeople should keep their word. If you say youâre leaving, leave. Donât just pay lip service.â
Elysia frowned. âWhoâs just paying lip service? Iâm seriously out of here! What would I gain from lying to you? Why would I even want to lie to you?â
âJust donât make me lose respect for you. If I see you around here again, Iâll laugh you out of town.â
âAre you nuts? Rest assured, if I ever show up again, Iâll eat my hat!â
âGet lost.â
âYou!â
Benjamin quickly stepped in to defuse the situation. âMs. Thorne, donât mind him. Heâs just in a bad mood today.â
âSo he gets to snap at people because heâs in a foul mood? Who let him get away with that terrible attitude?â
Tarquin shot her a chilling look, and Elysia clammed up.
She turned to Benjamin. âItâs getting late, and Iâm on a tight schedule. I should ge F OF I Take care, Dr. Benjamin.â
Huffing, Elysia stormed out of the hospital room.
going.
Yet, as she walked away, she couldnât resist one last glance at Elijah through the window. The thought of leaving stirred an unexpected ache inside herâshe felt oddly reluctant to say goodbye to the boy.
But, then Tarquinâs voice cut through from the room, âIf youâre going, then go. No oneâs stopping you.â
Elysia thought, âAs if I care about your approval. I donât want you to stop me, you jerk! Let this be the last time we ever cross paths!â
Benjamin stepped out but couldnât spot Elysia, so he returned to the hospital room. âWhatâs the deal, Tarquin? Donât you want her help with Elijah?â
Tarquin remained silent, his face dark.
âSheâs leaving, and you donât even try to keep her around, just antagonize her. Alas! honestly think sheâs a good match for Elijah. Itâs going to be hard to find another lady with her qualities.â
A master of psychology, kind, caring, patient, and even a bit of a healer with her herbal knowâhow⦠A rare combination, indeed.
