Chapter 71
Hitched & Hitched Again: A Comedy of Marital Mayhem ( Elysia and Tarquin)
Zane looked at her with concern. âYou alright? Should we head to the hospital?â
Elysia shook her head lightly. âI just need a moment to catch my breath.â
Zane quickly went to the nearby minibar and grabbed a bottle of spring water, twisting off the cap and handing it to her. âHere, drink some water.â
âThanks,â Elysia said, taking several sips.
âHow do you feel now? You sure we donât need to make a hospital run?â
âYeah, no need, Iâm fine.â
Zane let her rest for a bit before asking, âWhen did you get back to town? And how on earth did you get into a tiff with Gage?â
Elysia replied, âIâve been back for a while. Heard from Blossom that Winona was out of the country shooting a film, so I didnât drop by to visit.â
Mentioning Winonaâs filming abroad, a fleeting shadow crossed Zaneâs eyes, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared.
âYeah, sheâs been gone sometime now. She got a gig that required hushâhush production and even signed a nondisclosure agreement. No clue when sheâll be back. Heck, even I Canât reach her.â
After saying this, Zane quickly changed the subject. âSo whatâs the real deal with you and Gage?â
Elysia frowned. âI was bartending the other night, and he set his sights on me. From the moment we met, he was trying toâ¦â
Zane got the picture and scowled. âThat Gage is a notorious womanizer in Jindale City, always loafing around, never serious about anything. If it werenât for his brother Donovan Slaterâs reputation, heâd have been taken down a peg long ago.â
âThe Slater family, theyâre powerful here?â
âYep, theyâre one of Jindale Cityâs leading families.â
âIâve heard of the Bradford family, never the Slaters.â
âThe Slater familyâs been on the rise these past few years. The reason being Ms. Slater from their family is tight with⦠wellâ¦â
He caught himself, remembering Tarquin had disowned the connection, and quickly pivoted, âMs.
Slaterâs close friendship with the Bradfords has given the whole Slater family a leg up. Thatâs why people tread lightly around Gage.â
09:44 âNo wonder Gageâs so brazen.â
âWe canât mess with his likes, so itâs best to steer clear.â
âGot it, and thanks for today.â
âDonât mention it. But how did you end up bartending?â
âI didnât have a job lined up, so I took a partâtime gig. Just my luck to run into him on my first night.â
Zane frowned. âThatâs no place for someone like you.â
Elysia gave a wry smile; she, a penniless soul, couldnât afford to be choosy. As long as it wasnât illegal, any job that paid was good enough.
Zane asked her again, âWhere have you been all these years? We looked everywhere for you, nearly drove ourselves mad. We even filed a missing person report when we couldnât find any trace of you.â
Elysiaâs lips moved, but she was at a loss for words.
âDing, ding, dingâ¦â
Zaneâs phone suddenly rang, and he glanced at the screen, âSorry, gotta take this call.â
âSure, go ahead.â
Zane stepped aside with his phone. âHello?â
The voice on the other end was frantic. âZane, you here yet? Mr. Bradfordâs already arrived, and youâre not here. Do you have any idea how much effort I put in to set up this meeting for you? We finally get a chance to have dinner with Mr. Bradford, and youâre not seizing the opportunity to make a good impression. Get over here, pronto.â
Zane glanced at Elysia and responded, âIâll be right there.â
Seeing the situation, Elysia knew he had obligations. âGo on, get to your meeting. We can catch up some other time.â
With a hint of regret, Zane said, âBusiness matters, neverâending social commitments.â
