Chapter 11
My Heartless Alpha
My eyes twitched open slowly and a yawn erupted from my throat. I was comfy, really comfy. Satin sheets wrapped around me like the softest of snow and sleep almost enveloped me once more. The memories of what happened with Asher filtered through my relaxed mind but then I bolted upright as fear ran through me once more.
My eyes scanned the room, hoping I would have any recognition of where I was. I came back empty, well, partially. I'd managed to work out that this was Asher's room. It was a cavernous space, fitted out with everything black. Black sheets, black bed, black furniture, black curtains. The only decoration in here that was not dark was the wallpaper, it was painted crimson with an ivory pattern flowing throughout.
Leaping off the bed, despite the groans of my body, I ran to the door whilst shouting, "Asher, Asher!" At the top of my lungs.
Then a voice came in from behind me-very close behind me.
"What? Your screeching is probably killing all the wildlife"
I'd never spun around so fast. The first thing I did was look at his wound, only to notice he had thrown a top over his torso.
I pulled the top up quickly, desperate to see his condition. But as I lifted up the material of his t-shirt, there were no bandages over the wound. In its place was a scar.
How long have I been asleep?
"Impossible" I spoke, my eyebrows furrowing.
"No, it's not. Werewolves heal at an extremely fast rate, and luckily it didn't puncture any organs" Asher spoke casually.
How can he be so at ease when he almost died?!
"You almost died! And your acting like it's an everyday occurrence! For goodness sake, how can you take this so lightly?" I shouted with anger and confusion, my hands were poking his chest.
"Well you shouldn't of been so worried, I'm fine ,it doesn't hurt at all."
He lifted his finger and began tracing my cheek. Sparks tingled through my body, making me feel utterly happy and weightless. But I sharply pulled out of his grasp and stepped back.
"Planning on making me unconscious again?" I ask, my eyebrows arched, my voice laced with venom.
"I don't have to explain my reasonings with you" He replied coolly, glaring me directly in the eyes almost waiting for me to defy him.
Well, turns out he's beginning to get to know me after all,
"We are equals, and I'm asking you to tell me why you decided to make me unconscious against my will, when all I wanted to do was keep my eyes open"
Silence blanketed us as he processed my words. Finally, he sighed and walked over to the bed, collapsing onto it with a huff.
I waited patiently, a virtue which I didn't have, but i thought that interfering would only have worse affects, so I kept my mouth shut.
"It was quite severe, thankfully I'm fine now, but I was quite close to death. We're mates and when a mate dies it's painful enough for the surviving one so I thought that if I was going to die then if you witnessed it it would only makes your pain worse. Obviously, the pain comes with time, especially since we barely know each other and I know that I've hurt you, but that's part of the werewolf way."
I'd never known him to display such compassion,even if it was a small amount, Asher meant well in this case.
But his latter words made me slightly angry,
"It's part of the werewolf way to hurt me? Well , it's part of the human way to leave when someone abuses you" I spat out, turning around and slamming the bedroom doors.
I could feel his breath at my neck as I was rapidly walking down the corridor and the flight of stairs when I realised that we were back at the woodland house.
Instead of walking out the door, like Asher expected after my outburst, I went straight into the kitchen. My stomach was rumbling with hunger.
There was an aroma floating in the air, of cinnamon and sugar. I noticed a plate full of cinnamon swirls sitting on the Island patiently.
Making an inhumane noise I lunged over, grabbing the whole plate and running over to the dining room table to scoff them.
They were my absolute favourite pastry, without a flicker of doubt.
Once I had finished four and my hand reached out for another, Asher grabbed my arm fiercely.
"Stop playing games with me" He gritted out.
"I have no idea what your talking about," I replied sweetly, not caring about the consequences.
"I'm just minding my own business, eating these cinnamon swirls, so I would like it very much if you release.my.arm. " I spoke coolly.
He brought his lips down to my ear so they lightly brushed my earlobe and whispered menacingly;
"I've had enough. The next time you defy me you are going in the pit, and trust me, you never want to go there. Be careful."
"Submit to me..." he spoke against my skin, his soft lips trailing down my neck sending butterflies and desire through my body.
How could he go from threatening to sensual all in the blink of an eye?
Abruptly, he broke away, his hands releasing my body as he turned around and edged towards the coffee machine.
My breathing was heavy, and I was completely flustered, my body pumped with lust.
This darn mate bond I thought to myself angrily.
"Coffee?" Asher turned around, seemingly cool and collected.
"Umhh..yea...yes" I mumbled some incoherent words, my body still not recovering from Asher's touch.
He smirked at me knowingly and proceeded to ask me how I take my coffee. An awkward silence followed as he prepared the drinks.
I wondered if there was any way to break the mate bond. My life would be much better if I was free from it. I could travel the world as I planned, working along with charities to help those who can't afford medical help.
God, that was my dream. It is my dream. But I was being held back, by something beyond my control.
I prayed to myself that I could find a way to break out of Asher's potent grasp, out of this world. Because I would never submit to him and allow myself to fall into his traditional, sexist ideals.
"Rose" Asher growled out.
"What?" I spoke sleepily, pulled out of my trance.
His grey orbs narrowed in on mine as he stalked over, drinks in hand.
"Were going out today. You need new clothes because frankly, you're dirty and you smell atrocious"
"Thanks for the honesty" I replied sarcastically , lowering my head and taking a whiff of my body.
Ok, I suppose on this one thing, me and Asher were in agreement.
"How's your pack?" I inquired in a low tone. His head snapped up and assessed mine in a calculating manner.
"We were rebuilding damaged houses last night and tomorrow I'm starting up training again but I'm extending the training periods to 4 hours a day. Oh and I think you mean 'our pack'"
The only thing he spoke about with actual emotion was his pack, it obviously meant a lot to him.
"Do you know if Freddy is ok?" I looked up, wringing my hands together anxiously.
Asher looked up, thunder glinting in his eyes.
"He was taken to one of the safe houses within the woods" his voice was laced with anger and also a hint of jealously.
It wasn't my fault that I preferred Freddy to Asher. In fact, if Asher wasn't a violent, sadistic, emotionless man then I wouldn't have as much hatred toward him as I currently bestow.
"Let's go" he ordered abruptly.
I looked down at my attire and almost vomited in disgust.
I was wearing the same clothes as the night of the Rogue attack, expect the material was tattered, ripped and marred with dirt and blood.
"Oh yeah sure, like we will totally not draw attention to ourselves with me looking like death itself " I arched my eyebrow at him.
"Fine" he huffed, " shower and use some of my clothes. You have 5 minutes, I'm timing you." He replied, a serious look adorning his face like always.
~~~~
Roughly 5 minutes later I strolled down the stairs with a fresh set of clothes on and my body newly cleansed.
"You're late" Asher declared gruffly
"Whatever" I whispered under my breath, knowing full well he would hear it.
Some part of me has just given up being scared and fearful of him I suppose. Maybe a part of me has given up hoping to escape this sexist, controlling world .
"Where are we going?" I asked as he started the car and we crept out of his woodland mansion.
"To this shopping centre a few towns away" He replied in a clipped fashion as though he was wasting his breath talking to me.
"Ok" I replied yawning.
I closed my eyes as the car zoomed forward, marvelling in the sunlight heating my face. Tiredness crept over me and I pulled my knees up to my chest making myself comfortable before falling into a temporary sleep.
I was awoken by loud noises of impatience.
"Hmgmnm" I mumbled, still driven by sleep.
"Get up" Asher poked at me, "I don't have time for this" he growled.
I sighed loudly, making my annoyance blatant, "Fine" I hummed in acquiescence, slowly dragging my body up and out the car.
We entered random shops within the large outdoor shopping centre that was prepossessingly integrated into the cliffs. Anything I even spared a second glance at Asher grabbed and proceeded to buy.
The trip flew by, and to my surprise consisted of me and Asher actually engaging in conversation, not throwing abuse at each other every minute of every hour.
"You don't have to do that" I said to him as he was lugging round all of the shopping bags, "I think we are ready to go now" I look up at him for his opinion and confirmation. He had bought me clothes and shoes for every season And I was grateful, although he took me away from my life therefore I could see it as a type of compensation.
"I just want to go into this one shop" Asher began and walked off, leaving me chasing after him.
We entered an old, dusty bookstore and I immediately fell in love with the place. Books were stacked up to the ceiling in a messy yet organised way which I adore. Such a small space crammed with such beauty and knowledge .
There were two people, presumably cashiers, behind the till engaging in a heated conversation.
"I heard Alpha Asher is planning an attack on the rogues after yesterday. He's going to gather up his packs in our territory and terminate the dirty rogues once and for all." One of them, a large balding man declared.
"Did you hear that Alpha Cane is coming here in a few days aswell? Acting as reinforcement against the rogues and the rogue leader whose claimed to be..." they lowered their voice, "a witch. She's can supposedly break a mate bond permanently, and, her dark and evil forces are so close to our borders....."
I didn't get to hear the rest as Asher gripped my forearm in a deadly vice, dragging me out of the shop with an angered and calculating look marring his face.
Fear grumbled in the bottom of my stomach and terror gripped my insides.
What has fate brought me into?
