My Ex-Boyfriend’s Brothers: Chapter 19
My Ex-Boyfriend’s Brothers: A Contemporary Reverse Harem Romance (Ex Marks the Spot)
I let myself into Lukeâs cabin and whistled as I looked around the two-story house. âIt pays to be the oldest, huh?â
Luke walked across the open cabin to hug me. âGood to see you, bro. I especially like how youâre pretending like you didnât sneak in here and steal my dinner yesterday.â
I slapped his back and grinned. âI had to feed my date.â
âAh. Your date.â Jackson stood up from the large leather couch and came over to gently shove me. âIs that who drank my wine?â
âI know better than to openly admit my sins.â I followed them to the kitchen island and settled on one of the stools. âSo, whatâs this meeting about?â
âI was wondering the same thing. Itâs not very often big bro calls a family meeting.â Jackson settled next to me and elbowed me in the side. âCan we expect Bradley to show up, too?â
Luke let out a snort. âYeah, not for this conversation. I donât think heâd like it very much.â
I groaned. âThen that means weâre talking about Maggie.â
Jackson sighed. âWhy would the three of us be talking about Bubbles?â
Luke leaned against the cabinets opposite of us and rubbed his jaw. He needed a shave but other than that, he looked like heâd been taking care of himself. âIt seems like weâre all three chasing after her.â
âThe fuck?â Jackson looked at me and then at Luke. âSheâs mine. Iâve waited-â
âSix years.â Luke rolled his eyes. âJust like the rest of us.â
I rested my elbows on the counter and rubbed my temples. âIâm guessing this is the reason she wouldnât let me come in with her.â
âAnd the reason she wouldnât let me take her on a date today.â
Luke and I both looked at Jackson, ready for him to commiserate with us. When he smirked, I punched him in the side. âWhat the fuck are you smirking about? What happened?â
âShe let me come inside.â Jackson definitely meant the double entendre if his cocky expression was to be believed.
I had to get up and move away from him so I didnât hit him harder, in the face. After I put a safe amount of space between us, I glared at him. âYouâre serious.â
He nodded. âSo, like I said. Sheâs mine.â
âDo women who are yours typically let me make out with them against a tree?â Luke winced when Jackson stood up. We both knew Jacksonâs temper was famously shitty.
âShe was with me for our date and we got pretty far.â I figured Iâd throw my hat in the ring, too. If Jackson was going to start swinging, heâd have to hit both of us.
âHitting us isnât going to change the situation weâre in, Jack. She clearly likes all three of us.â Luke grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and took a long drink. âWe need to figure it out. I donât want just sex from her.â
âNeither do I!â Jackson growled the words out and paced. âWhat is there to figure out?â
âHow weâre going to navigate this, Jack. We all want her. She canât decide which of us she wants. At least, it seems that way. We need to work something out so we donât end up killing each other.â Luke looked at me. âCan you jump in here and help me out?â
I blew out a rough breath and walked towards the living room. âGive me a minute.â
Both of them followed me. Jacksonâs mood continued to sour. âI care about her. If you think Iâm going to just stand by and let one of you take her from me, youâre fucking wrong.â
I sank into the couch and stared up at the ceiling. âI didnât think Iâd be here again, watching the woman I want date another one of my brothersâ¦â
âYou both care about her?â Luke sat across from me. âIn a real way?â
Jackson grunted. âYeah. I care about her.â
âYeah.â I nodded and looked at both of them. âI tried to move on. Nothing worked.â
âSo, what do we do?â Leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees, his frown showed just how unhappy he really was about the situation weâd found ourselves in. âI guess I always knew you both were interested in her, too. God knows we werenât all that secretive about it. How she didnât know, Iâll never understand.â
âBrad.â I scowled as I thought about what sheâd told me about the day at the pool. âHe convinced her that there was something wrong with her body.â
Jackson glared at me. âWhat the fuck is wrong with him?â
âDonât look at me expecting an answer. I think sheâs fucking perfect.â I crossed my arms and scowled back at him.
âSame. Sheâs sexy as hell and has always been way too good for him.â Jackson blew out a deep breath. âSheâs too good for all of us.â
âAlright⦠This isnât helping.â Luke stood up and grabbed a bottle of whiskey from the bar. âI donât want us to end up hurting her. How do we have her choose one of us without this entire thing blowing up in our faces?â
I tuned their conversation out as a thought popped into my head. During my travels, Iâd seen a lot of different types of relationships and family dynamics. There was a village Iâd visited in southern Europe where the women were so drastically outnumbered by the men that theyâd developed a new way of living. Instead of the harems of mensâ fantasies with dozens of virgins, or whatever some men thought sounded fun, it was a harem of men for one woman.
Even as I thought about it, I dismissed it. That was insane. The entire idea of bringing that type of relationship into a reality where women and men were equal in number seemed ridiculous. Maggie would be able to choose one of us. Weâd just have to figure out a way for her to decide who she wanted and the two she didnât pick would just have to deal with the consequences.
I stood up and paced. I didnât want to chance ending up watching Maggie marry one of my brothers. The first time around had been bad enough and sheâd never even been almost engaged to Brad. If she chose me, how would I bring her home for family events when I knew the history there?
âI have an idea.â I didnât even realize it was my voice saying those words until I noticed Luke and Jackson staring at me.
âWhat is it?â Luke gestured between Jackson and himself. âWeâve gotten nowhere. Jacksonâs ideas are all about whoâs the strongest.â
âAnd Lukeâs ideas are all about who has the most money.â
I cleared my throat. âItâs going to sound insane.â
Jackson laughed. âWeâre discussing how to get the woman we want to pick between us. Weâve already passed that point, Ry.â
I cringed. âI donât know if we have.â
They both listened as I spoke with varying degrees of horror and shock but neither of them tossed me out. I took that as a decent starting off point. And by the time the whiskey ran out and we were all shitfaced, the horror and shock had turned into shrugs and maybes. Morning brought hangovers and sobriety but the horror didnât return.
