My Ex-Boyfriend’s Brothers: Chapter 30
My Ex-Boyfriend’s Brothers: A Contemporary Reverse Harem Romance (Ex Marks the Spot)
âOpen the door, Mags.â Ryanâs voice was soft with worry but as soon as he heard me sniff, it grew more urgent. âMaggie. Come on, baby, open up.â
I pushed the door open for him, still crying. âWhat if Iâd been pooping?â
He took in the state of my face and his eyes narrowed. âI wouldnât care. What did Brad say to you?â
I pouted but let him pull me up from where I was sitting on the toilet seat. I sniffed again as I tried to stop the tears. âNothing. Itâs fine.â
âMaggie.â Ryanâs serious tone was unusual for him but it worked.
âHe freaked out because a band that I told him was unavailable is unavailable. He told me I was bad at my job but Iâm not. Iâm not bad at my job and itâs not fair for him to be such an ass about every single thing. I told him, Ryan. I told him we couldnât get the band.â I sniffed harder and leaned into Ryanâs embrace. âI donât even know why Iâm crying. I think Iâm just overwhelmed. Normally I donât let him bother me this much.â
âFuck him. Quit, Maggie. He doesnât deserve you. He never did.â He cupped my face and forced me to look at him. âYou donât need to do this. Fucking quit and let him handle this shit himself.â
My lip wobbled as I tried to shake my head. âI canât. I need the money, Ryan. I never wouldâve taken the job if I wasnât desperate.â
âNothing is worth letting him hurt you over and over again.â
âI need the money to put my mom in a better nursing home. I need the business and the referrals that Iâll get from this wedding. I canât quit.â I pushed away from him and walked to the sink to splash my face. âI wouldnât, anyway. Iâm not a quitter. How else do you think I lasted three years with your brother?â
He wrapped his arms around me from behind and met my eyes in the mirror. âIâll give you the money. Any of us would, Maggie. You know we would.â
I sank back into his chest and sighed. âI canât. I canât let you, or your brothers, do that. Whatever weâre doing, I donât want it muddied by me taking your money.â
âIt wouldnât.â He splayed his hands out across my stomach and pressed his lips to the shell of my ear. âYou arenât alone anymore.â
âI shouldnât like that so much.â I slowly turned and wrapped my arms around his neck. âYouâre doing enough by just being here for me. Iâm already feeling better.â
âWell, if you think youâre feeling better now, wait until youâre on our date.â He pressed his lips to my nose and squeezed my butt. âAre you too busy to sneak away right now?â
Shaking my head, I smiled up at him. âI have stuff I could be doing but Iâd rather sneak away with you. Since Iâve already been called bad at my jobâ¦â
âCome on, then. How does a dip in the lake sound?â His eyes took on a mischievous glint. âIâve wanted to go for a swim since I got here but Iâve been a little distracted.â
I laughed, thinking he was kidding. When he didnât laugh with me, I started shaking my head. âNo way! Itâll be ice cold! Youâre nuts.â
âJump in with me, Maggie.â He ran his fingers up my sides and tickled me. âLive a little.â
I smirked. âI let your brother go down on me against the side of a building this morning. Howâs that for living a little?â
He groaned and pressed his hips into mine. âWhy does that turn me on? Is my brain already fucked after one night? Either way, youâre definitely going swimming with me now. Would you like to take this pretty dress off first?â
I gasped as he picked me up and tossed me over his shoulder. âRyan!â
He slapped my butt and took off at a jog that shouldâve left him out of breath but when he reached the edge of the lake, he was breathing just fine. Fine enough to cackle as I struggled to get away from him. âDress on or off, Maggie?â
âRyan, no! Put me down, you goof!â
âI guess you want the dress on!â His gait changed as he ran down the small wooden dock and then we were weightless. Until we broke the surface of the water and cold water sucked us in. Ryan let out a loud shout as he came up for air. âFuck, thatâs cold!â
I spashed him and pushed my hair out of my face. âAs soon as I can feel my body, Iâm going to kick your ass, Ryan.â
He grinned and swam closer. âItâs not so bad. Here. Iâll warm you up.â
I let him come closer, but only because I wanted his warmth. I couldnât help rolling my eyes at him as he pulled me close and wrapped my legs around his waist. âYouâre lucky Iâm nice.â
âI am.â He slowly moved us closer to the dock. âIâm also lucky that youâre forgiving and hot.â
âOh, yeah?â I ran my hand through his soaked hair and watched his curls spring back at me. âYou like the drowned rat look?â
He nodded. âA lot.â
âItâs just too bad that itâs so cold in this lake. You know, cause of shrinkage.â I grinned at the look of annoyance on his face. âYou didnât think that through, did you?â
Ryan pinned me to the dock ladder and let me feel just how little the cold water was affecting him. It was his turn to grin when my eyes went wide. âThe water isnât that cold, baby. Iâm a trooper.â
