Love Redesigned: Chapter 37
Love Redesigned (Lakefront Billionaires Book 1)
Adoorbell chimes in the distance after another round of unbelievable sex. Julian has more stamina than ten triathlon winners, and although I want to keep up with him, my pussy officially tapped out for the night, and no amount of lube or oral sex will change my mind.
âExpecting someone?â I roll off him so he can get up.
âNo.â He reaches for his phone and curses.
âWhat?â
âItâs my mom.â
I jolt upright. âWhat is she doing here this late?â
Loud banging against the front door has both of us staring at each other with wide eyes.
âMy car is outside.â
He nods.
âDo you think she will suspect something?â
âIâm pretty sure she jumped to conclusions the moment she saw that you were here.â
I throw the comforter over my head. âDonât mind me. Iâm going to stay here forever.â
He chuckles as he pulls the comforter down. âIâll tell her not to make a big deal of it.â
âThis is your mother weâre talking about. Iâm pretty sure she is already calling the Wisteria Weekly to announce the news.â
âIâll swear her to secrecy.â
âItâs cold out here!â The doorbell app echoes her shouting from downstairs.
He presses a button on his phone. âIâm coming now.â
âAnd Dahlia?â
Good luck getting out of seeing her.
âI heard that,â his mother responds, startling me.
I said that out loud?
Julian muffles his laugh with his fist while I glare at his phone screen.
âBe right there.â My attempt at a cheery voice falls flat.
Julian collects our clothes and helps me get dressed in record time before leading me downstairs. I smooth out a wrinkle running down the center of my dress while he opens the front door.
âMa. What are you doing here?â
âDahlia!â Josefina brushes past her son and throws her arms around me. âWhat a nice surprise.â
I give Julian a look.
She holds me at armâs length. âAre you okay?â
âSure? Is there a reason I shouldnât be?â
She shoots her son a terrifying glare. âI saw Rafaâs video.â She turns back to me. âI came here to give Julian a piece of my mind, but I see itâs not necessary.â The grin on her face should come with a warning label.
âOh, I wonât stop you from giving him hell.â I gesture toward the man standing off to the side with his arms crossed.
âDonât tempt me.â She plants her hands on her hips. âLuis Julian Lopez Junior, what were you thinking, scaring her like that?â
He doesnât speak.
I place my hand on her shoulder. âItâs fine, Josefina. Julian and I talked it out.â
She turns toward me with hearts in her eyes. âDid you?â
âYup.â
âI was wondering why your dress is on inside outâ¦â
âWhat?â I turn my neck to check for a tag.
âKidding!â
âMa,â Julian groans.
She shrugs. âWhat? I wanted to confirm something.â
âThe fact that youâre crazy?â
She cackles.
Julian shoots me a look over her shoulder.
âJosefina,â I say.
That seems to sober her. âYes?â
âDo you mind keeping this between us?â
She winces.
âWho did you tell?â Julian grumbles.
âRosa.â
I want to get annoyed, but Josefina truly canât help herself. The woman was born with a big heart and an even bigger mouth.
Julian glares at his mother.
Her arms shoot up to her sides in submission. âThatâs it. I swear.â
Julian reaches for the door. âCall Rosa on your way home and tell her not to tell anyone else.â
Her left brow curves into a perfect arch. âDonât tell anyone what?â
âWhat you saw.â He kisses the top of her head before yanking the door open.
Josefina walks outside. âAnd what exactly did I see?â She bats her lashes at her son.
âToo damn much.â
âDonâtââ
âTe quiero. CuÃdate.â He swings the door shut, closing us off yet again from the outside world.
Just how I like it.
Julian tried his hardest to have me stay over, and I nearly caved to his request, but then I remembered our agreement. If I want to protect myself from getting hurt by him again, I should steer clear of cuddling, late-night pillow talk, and sleepovers.
When I wake up the next morning, I find my mom waiting for me in the kitchen.
Te quiero. CuÃdate: Take Care.
âMami?â I rub the sleep from my eyes. âShouldnât you be at work?â
âI wanted to be here when you woke up.â
Ah, shit. I knew this conversation was coming once Josefina found me at Julianâs house last night, but I didnât expect it to happen so soon.
I place a coffee pod in my momâs Nespresso machine before turning around. âIâm sorry you had to find out about everything the way you did.â
âYou think Iâm upset?â
âYes?â
âNo, mija. Iâm worried.â
Unlike my momâs usual bouts of anxiety, this feels different.
âYou came backâ¦so sad. I donât want to see you like that again.â
I drop a teaspoon of sugar in my cup. âIâm doing better.â
âI know, which is why I worry.â
âThis is different.â
âHow so?â
âUmâ¦â Yeah, itâs a hard pass on talking about my sex life.
âItâs not too serious yet,â I say.
She makes a noise in the back of her throat.
âWeâre seeing how things go,â I add.
She nods. âYouâre old enough to make your own decisions.â
Iâm stunned into silence. I expected my mom to be rattling off about sex before marriage and rushing to have a church wedding to save my soul, not this.
âThatâs it?â I ask.
She rises from her stool and drops a kiss on the top of my head. âThatâs it.â
âYouâre not going to warn me about getting hurt or being stupid or something?â
âJulian wonât hurt you.â
I rear back. âHow do you know?â
âThe answer is obvious every time I catch him staring at you.â
My heart misses a beat. âWhat do you mean?â
âThat man would rather hurt himself before putting you in true harmâs way.â
I lock my knees together to stop myself from toppling over. âMami.â
âItâs been that way since you were kids.â
âDo youâ¦â My voice trails off.
âDo I what?â
Think he could be the one?
Are you serious, Dahlia? You got out of a serious relationship less than five months ago.
I shake my head. âNothing.â
Lily replays the video of me screaming for the fifth time this afternoon. She has spent our entire lunch together showing everyone who will spare a minute of their day.
At this rate, by five p.m., everyone in town will have seen me losing my shit over a ghost that doesnât exist and a Halloween lawn decoration Rafa found in Josefinaâs garage.
I rise from my seat to the sounds of the waitress and Lily laughing together.
âHey! Wait up!â Lily calls after me.
âNo.â I walk out of the diner.
Lily chases after me. âStop!â My sister huffs and puffs as she grabs my arm and yanks me away from my car. âWhat was that about?â
I throw my hands in the air. âIâm sick of seeing that video.â
âCome on. You have to admit itâs kind of funny.â
âItâs embarrassing.â
âI beg to differ. Itâs so cute how you cry out for Julian.â She repeats the part where I almost break into tears.
I bite down on my tongue until I taste blood. âIâm going to kill Rafa for sharing that video in the group chat.â
âIt would have been a hate crime to keep this gem hidden from us.â Lily shows me the screenshot she saved as her phoneâs lock screen.
âI wonât sleep well until I get my revenge.â
She rubs her hands together. âWhat are we thinking?â
âWe?â
âYouâre not seriously thinking of doing something fun without me.â
âThe fewer the witnesses, the better.â
She winks. âJust how I like it.â
âYou want to help?â
âOf course. You and I are partners in crime.â
âSpeaking of crime, your friendâs brother is a deputy, right?â
Her smile alone could land her on the FBIâs Most Wanted list. âYes.â
âDo you think he is the type to willingly arrest someone who isnât actually guilty of a crime?â
âIâm sure he can be enticed into the idea with a gift card to the townâs bookstore or something like that. Why? Whatâs the plan?â
âYou canât tell anyone.â
She holds out her pinkie like we did as kids. âPinkie promise.â
I lock mine with hers. âIâm thinking of waiting until after Thanksgiving so he doesnât suspect a thingâ¦â
