Sick Boys: Chapter 45
Sick Boys: A Dark Bully RH Romance (Spine Ridge University)
After the boys complete their suspension, and weâve all written our ten-thousand-word essay, Dylanâs father finally lets us off the hook.
The following days, everyone around this campus looks at me like Iâm a devil in disguise. Whispers of my story about those Phantom boys have gone all around the university, and even though most believe my story, no one really dares to get close anymore.
All because Iâm a part of the clique who got caught up in that unresolved murder case.
As I walk down the hallway, Dylan and Alistair walk out of a classroom where Felix waits for them, leaning against the wall. He hands Dylan a cigarette while holding up his own, and Dylan lights both before they all walk down the hallway in my direction.
A devious smirk grows on Dylanâs face when he spots me while Alistair remains aloof, as always. But Felixâs eyes scare me most of all. Possessive. Greedy. An all-consuming stare that could bore a hole into my chest and rip out my heart while itâs still beating.
Theyâre headed straight toward me, but instead of turning around, I face them head-on, just as I did the first time I met them in these same hallways.
And when they get close, Dylan runs to me and wraps his arm around my neck so tight I might choke.
âHey, cute little rat,â he says, rubbing my hair so itâs all messy.
âOh my God, I told you not to call me that,â I retort, shoving him, but he wonât let go, and for some reason, it makes me laugh too.
âOkay, little slut,â he rebukes.
My jaw drops. âWeâre in public.â
âSo? Doesnât make you any less ours,â Felix says as he stands behind me and leans over, holding the cigarette between his index finger and thumb. âWant a smoke?â
I shake my head. âNo, thanks. My uncle died of lung cancer. Iâve seen what it does.â
Felix shrugs. âSuit yourself.â He takes another whiff, then casually puts his hand on my waist.
âNo smoking in the hallways, Rivera!â a teacher yells from down the hall.
Felix just raises his brow and keeps smoking until we get to the teacher, after which he chucks it on the ground in front of him and stomps it out. âThere you go. Itâs all yours now.â
âInsufferable littleââ
âDid you forget whoâs on the fucking school board?â Felix says, shoving his hands into his pocket, which I know is a sign heâs getting pissed.
âYou know the rulesââ
âIâll make sure that rule is fucking changed,â Felix interjects. âAnd the day it does, you wonât find out because youâll be fucking gone.â
Then he walks off like it meant nothing at all, even though the teacher seems horrified that heâd even have that kind of power.
When I spot Kayla talking just beyond the grand doors of the building, I leave the boys and run up to them. âHey, girls. Sorry, Iâm late for our usual picnic.â
They eye me as though Iâve risen from the dead. âAre you sure you want to come?â Crystal peeks over my shoulder. âSeems like youâve been busy.â
I shrug. âThey wonât get in the way.â I glare at them over my shoulder. âRight, boys?â
Dylan shrugs. âAli, wanna go get some burgers?â
âFuck yeah, Iâm game,â he replies, and they walk off together while Felix remains with me.
âYouâre not going with them?â I ask him.
âNo,â he retorts, hovering behind me like a goddamn ghost. âSomeoneâs gotta keep tabs.â
I frown. âTabs?â Wow, offensive. âIâm not a fucking toddler.â
His brow rises. âI donât care what you think.â
My eyes narrow as I lean in. âI donât need to be watched.â
He leans in too now, getting eye to eye. âDid you forget about the Phantoms? Kaiâs still out there. Youâve got a target on your back now. Iâm watching.â
I grit my teeth. âFine.â I point my finger at his chest. âBut I donât want to hear you insult any of my friends, got it?â
He grabs my finger and gently brings it to his lips, sucking on the tip. âCommand me some more. I might grow to like it.â
I heat like a kettle about to whistle. âOh my God.â I rip my finger away before I blush, and I turn around, determined to ignore him.
âSeems you two have got some marital problems,â Kayla jests.
âHeâd wish he could put a ring on this finger,â I retort.
âCâmon, the others are waiting,â Crystal says.
Felix grumbles behind me, so I throw him a glance, but he doesnât open his mouth. Good. I donât want him to ruin the one good thing Iâve got going for me.
âDoes he have to come?â Kayla whispers to me.
I nod. âSorry. Something about the Phantoms. Heâs worried about me after ⦠well the incident at the hot springs.â I roll my eyes.
âI heard some guys tried to take advantage of you,â Crystal whispers. âIs that true?â
Rumors travel fast here. âSort of.â
âIâm sorry,â Crystal adds.
âNothing too bad happened,â I say. âAli and Dylan were there to protect me.â
âAli? Nickname basis already?â Kayla shoves me with her elbow. âYouâre getting too close for comfort, girl.â
âHey,â Felix snarls at her, and we both turn around to look at him. âDonât touch her.â
Kayla grimaces. âYouâre a lovely fucking dude, arenât you?â she scoffs. âAsshole.â
He steps closer to her. âIâll show you how fucking lovely I can be.â
Theyâre up in each otherâs faces again, so I jump between them. âStop. Just fucking stop, okay?â I bark at him. âIf you canât fucking behave around her, then leave.â
âNo,â he says through gritted teeth.
âWhy not? Nothingâs gonna happen.â I point at my friends in the grass. âWhoâs gonna try to do something in the middle of the day while weâre having a picnic? Not even the Phantoms are that stupid.â
âI would rather cut off my own finger than leave you alone,â he grits.
It doesnât just make Kaylaâs eyes widen. Everyone in our vicinity is staring at us.
Heâd go that far just to keep me safe?
I can feel my cheeks heat again, and I hate it.
And judging from the penetrative stare in his eyes, I already know arguing with him will be futile.
âFine,â I growl, folding my arms. âSit with us. But quietly. I donât want to hear you moping around.â
âLead the way,â he says, eyeing Kayla too.
She rolls her eyes and turns to walk away, and I follow suit.
âSorry about that,â I tell her.
âI donât get what you see in them. I really donât,â she says.
âIâm sorry they treat you like shit. Iâve already told him he needs to quit that.â I swallow. âYou guys are my friends, and they just need to accept that, end of story.â
âSo theyâre all like hanging out with you or something?â Crystal asks.
I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear, laughing it off because I donât know how to answer this without sounding ridiculous. âItâs complicated.â
âWith those boys? For sure,â Kayla says, rolling her eyes.
Crystal laughs. âThey sound like a handful to me. But at least theyâre protective over you.â
âProtective?â Kayla snorts. âMore like stalkerish.â
Felix grumbles again, but he doesnât say a word. Good. I donât need more trouble. Iâve got enough as it is with him following me everywhere from now on.
We walk up to the rest of the guys sitting in the grass, and they all look up in surprise like they never expected to see me here.
âHey, Pen. Long time no see,â Jeremy says.
âPen! Not covered in gunk today, I see,â Calvin says, and Jeremy punches him in the knee for saying that out loud. Iâm just glad I didnât have to do it myself.
âLook whoâs with her,â Jeremy hisses at him.
Calvinâs eyes lurch up to Felixâs, and he loses all the color in his face. âUm ⦠why is he here?â
âHeâs her stalker,â Kayla announces like itâs not a joke at all.
âHeâs a friend. He wonât be a bother, I promise,â I add.
Calvin almost chokes. âFriend?â
I turn to look at Felix. âHeâll just sit in a corner, far away. Right, Felix?â
He rolls his eyes and sighs. âIâm not letting you out of my sight.â
Iâm so fucking embarrassed he just said that out loud like itâs a normal thing to do because everyone heard.
âOh my God,â Jeremy mutters.
Calvin snorts. âOh, sheâs got it good.â
âYou can just ignore him,â I say as Felix sits down on the farthest tip of the picnic blanket, his nostrils twitching like the mere smell of their food sets him off.
âTough luck,â Kayla jests. âFucker is like a statue.â
âOh, câmon now, he canât be that bad,â Crystal says, smiling at me. âShe likes him so there must be something nice about him.â
Okay, now Iâm really blushing. âHe just helps me.â
âWith what?â Calvin asks.
Oh Jesus. How do I answer this?
âHe â¦â
âHeâs her silent protector,â Kayla jests, putting her finger in front of her mouth. âLike a goddamn ninja warrior.â
The boys laugh, and Jeremy says, âCringe.â
âI wouldnât put it past him to suddenly ninja kick the shit out of someone just for looking at her, though,â Calvin says.
âCome here and find out,â Felix retorts.
âFelix,â I warn him, so he folds his arms and looks away again, annoyed as hell. âAs I said, ignore him.â
âWow,â Calvin mutters. âIâm impressed.â
âEat your fucking sandwich,â Jeremy says, and he stuffs the sandwich Calvin brought into his mouth so harshly half of it falls onto the blanket.
I laugh. âGood thing I brought plenty more.â I pull out my big shopper and hand out some sandwiches. âOn the house.â
âWow, thanks, Pen!â Crystal says as she takes one. âThatâs so nice of you.â
âI just wanted to do something to make it up to yâall. You know, for disappearing on you so much.â I look over my shoulder at Felix who just sits there, staring at me. âAnd for him being an asshole to you, Kayla.â
She smiles at me. âItâs not your fault. I totally blame him.â She throws him some shade. âWe should meet up at a club later. Maybe we can get rid of him there.â
âOh yes!â Calvin exclaims. âI know just the place downtown. Delectable. Itâs like a drag bar.â
âPerfect,â Kayla responds.
âThatâs an exclusive one,â Jeremy responds. âNo way weâll get inside without tickets. And I donât know anyone on the inside.â
âWell, we can try,â Crystal says.
âI know a better place,â Felix suddenly interjects, and everyone looks at him like they canât believe heâs about to suggest something. âClub RIVERA.â
Kaylaâs jaw drops. âWhat? But thatâsââ
âMy fatherâs,â he fills in, tilting his head. âAnd very much exclusive ⦠unless you know someone on the inside.â
I frown.
Why would he suggest that?
Though, being there would probably be one of the safest locations, far away from Phantom hands, and it would make it easier to stay on the lookout for Kai.
âWait ⦠are you seriously suggesting we go to your dadâs club?â Calvin asks, his jaw almost on the ground. âHoly shit.â
âCalvin, you cannot be serious right now,â Jeremy says, rolling his eyes. âReally? Youâre simping over a RIVERA club?â
âWhat? Theyâve got the best snacks, and I donât just mean the food.â He licks his lips. âI need to see that shit for myself.â
âSellout,â Jeremy mutters under his breath.
âLike you donât want to see some hung horse dancing on stage,â Calvin rebukes.
âWait, is this real? Are you trying to invite us?â Kayla asks, pointing at all of us while gawking at Felix. âYour sworn enemies?â
âYouâre not my enemies,â he retorts. âOr you wouldâve known, trust me.â
Kayla rolls her eyes. âThanks. That totally makes me feel better.â
âWhy not give it a chance?â Crystal asks. âIt canât be that bad if itâs like the most exclusive club in town. Besides, we need to celebrate after you aced that last test.â She bumps into Kayla and wraps her arms around her neck. âCâmon, Kay. Can we go? Please?â
Kayla sighs out loud. âOkay, okay.â
Crystal cheers and plants a kiss on Kaylaâs cheek. âWe deserve a night out.â
I eye Felix. I donât know why heâs doing this. It almost feels like heâs got an ulterior motive.
But I donât want to disappoint my friends.
So with a smirk on my face, I say, âAll right ⦠if Mr. Rivera personally invited us, I guess itâs time we paid that club a visit.â
