Sick Boys: Chapter 51
Sick Boys: A Dark Bully RH Romance (Spine Ridge University)
I practically fall out of the vehicle as it stops in front of the sorority. I push my way past Dylan and jump out, watching the flames lick up the ceiling of the building with horror in my eyes.
What the fuck happened?
Firefighters are on the scene, dousing the flames with water as best they can, focusing on one particular room to the left. The rest of the rooms seem unscathed from the outside, but who knows how long the fire has been raging, destroying everything in its path.
âPenelope!â Kayla yells as she runs up to me. âTilda called me, and I came home with Crystal as fast as I could.â
âWhat happened here?â I ask, gazing at the roaring fire.
âI donât know, someone said there was a small explosion, but no one saw anything.â
My pupils dilate. An explosion? That means itâs â¦
âSomeone wanted that room to burn,â Dylan mutters as he creeps up behind me.
âJesus, Pen, where were you?â Kayla asks, gripping my dress. âYouâre soaked.â She eyes Dylan. âYou both are.â
âI was at my sisterâs grave,â I say.
She releases my dress. âOh. I was just wondering why youâd leave us like that.â
âSorry,â I mutter, entranced by the flames.
âOh my God, this is like my worst nightmare,â Crystal says as she approaches us, and she pulls us both in for a hug. âI hope no one got hurt. Iâm scared.â
âItâs okay,â Kayla says. âThe firefighters are doing their best.â
âWhose room is it?â I ask.
âNot ours,â Kayla replies. âBut you should have seen the flames before. Theyâve already doused most of them.â
Felix and Alistair step out too, and Kayla looks up with suspicion in her eyes. âYou boys only bring trouble. You need to stay away from her.â
Felix raises his brow in a menacing way.
âWhy are they even here?â Kayla mutters as we stop hugging.
âThey helped me get through a tough spot,â I say and smile at her. âI donât want this to sour our friendship.â I look across my shoulder at the three boys. âCan you please accept them for me?â
âTheyâre not gonna go anywhere, are they?â Crystal muses.
âIâm as stuck with them as they are stuck with me,â I reply.
Dylan winks at me while Alistair takes a step back and puts on his hoodie, but Felix seems the most annoyed of all that both Crystal and Kayla are looking at him, and not in an amicable way.
After a while, theyâve extinguished the fire, and all thatâs left is smoke and ashes fluttering down the building. The firefighters talk among themselves, arguing about an item one of them is holding, and it makes me anxious.
âWhat do you think they found?â Crystal asks.
âIt canât be good,â Kayla replies.
âThe fuse,â Dylan mutters.
âWhat?â I frown.
âThat fire wasnât an accident,â he adds.
I swallow. âHow do you know for sure?â
He points at the building. âThe fire was contained to that room only.â
âSo?â
Felix clears his throat. âThat was your sisterâs room.â
All the blood leaves my face, and I feel like Iâm about to puke.
I immediately walk toward the firefighters.
âPenelope!â Kayla yells.
âPenelope, come back here,â Felix hisses at me, but I ignore him.
I try to listen to what the firefighters are saying about the item they found, but itâs hard with all these loud sirens.
âAre you sure?â I can hear Tilda, the sorority leader, say.
âPositive. Weâll have to file a report.â
Tilda sighs. âOkay. And where do we stay now?â
âThe building needs to be inspected for safety first. Thatâll take at least a week.â
âA week?â I hear audible gasps from the other ladies who live in the building.
Dean Caruso approaches out of nowhere.
Was he here all this time? Watching the fire, just like us?
âDonât worry, ladies. I will immediately ask my contacts so they can set up different accommodations for you.â He sighs out loud. âIn the meantime, book a hotel room and send the receipts to my office. But only for one night. Iâll get something up and running tomorrow.â
Heâs talking to the crowd like thereâs nothing to be worried about. But I am fucking worried.
And when his eyes connect to mine, I know this wonât end well for me.
âEveryone back to their houses. Showâs over,â he announces to the crowd gathered to watch the fire, but his eyes are still locked on me.
âTilda, Iâll leave this to you,â he says.
Tilda gazes at the firefighters. âCan I borrow this just a second?â
They nod. âOne minute.â
She takes the item and walks over to me. âPenelope ⦠Iâm sorry, but you canât stay in our sorority anymore.â
My eyes widen. âWhat? Youâre kicking me out?â
When she nods, Dylan steps in. âHey, she didnât do anything.â
Tilda holds up the item. Itâs a piece of fireworks, badly burned, but a piece of laminated plastic is stuck to the shell. Beneath it was a piece of paper with my first name written.
This has to be a cruel joke.
It just has to be.
âWhat?â I mutter.
âSince your name is on this, we have no choice.â
Iâm incensed. âYouâre accusing me of setting this fire? I wasnât even here.â
âShe was with us,â Felix says from the back, folding his arms.
Tilda briefly acknowledges him with a glance. âWe donât know who did,â Tilda says with a stern voice. âBut your name is on this thing, and I cannot take the risk.â
âThat isnât fair to her at all,â Dylan interjects, but I raise my hand to quiet him.
I donât need them to fight for me. I can do that myself.
âIâm sorry, Penelope. But enough is enough. Youâve already broken the rules, and I warned you there was a limit to my patience,â she says. She turns around and hands the fireworks back to the firefighters before returning to me. âI need you to leave the property. When the house is open again, you may return to get your things. But you wonât be allowed to join us again.â
It hurts so bad that tears sting my eyes, but I refuse to let them fall.
Iâm not the culprit of this blazing fire, but I sure as hell will go down from it with honor.
âFine. If thatâs the way you want to deal with this,â I turn away from her, closing my eyes as I walk away.
Kayla and Crystal follow suit. âWait, Pen, you canât be serious, right?â Crystal says.
âYouâre just gonna let Tilda kick you out?â Kayla adds. âI know you didnât do it.â
âI didnât, but that wonât matter to her. She needs someone to blame, so Iâll play the fucking martyr.â
I look at the boys. Those boys whose influence reaches far beyond the walls of this university. Whose deadly encounters leave behind countless enemies, all set on revenge.
Itâs because of them, and they know this. I can see it in their eyes.
I take in a deep breath.
âThey aimed for my sisterâs room,â I say. âSo itâs a vendetta against us both. That, or they aimed wrong.â
âDoubt it,â Dylan says from a few feet away.
âAre you telling me they were trying to ⦠kill you?â Crystal asks, her face turning as pale as snow.
âItâs a possibility,â Felix fills in for me, and he steps forward. âWhich is why sheâs coming with us.â Felixâs fingers slowly dig into my shoulder as he grips me tightly. âSheâll be safe at the Skull & Serpent Society.â
Kayla snorts. âI find that very hard to believe.â
Dylanâs whole body tenses up. âIf anyone ever tries to put a finger on Penelope, I will fucking gut them myself.â
Kaylaâs pupils dilate, and Crystal holds her gasp.
Theyâve never said it out loud before, especially not in front of my friends.
And itâs as if the world has gone completely silent.
Felix squeezes my shoulder again. âCâmon. Letâs go.â
âWait.â I pull free from his grasp to hug Kayla and Crystal.
âI just want you to be okay.â
âIâll be fine, donât worry about me,â I reply as I lean back. âTalk later.â
âText me every day so I know they havenât murdered you,â she says.
I chuckle as we stop hugging and I make my way back to the boys. âWill do.â
âMurder ⦠her?â Crystal repeats with a shaky voice.
âI was joking,â Kayla muses, but I can tell from the way sheâs looking at me as I walk off she definitely was not. But Crystal doesnât have to know.
