Sick Boys: Epilogue
Sick Boys: A Dark Bully RH Romance (Spine Ridge University)
Days later
I brush up the last bit of dirt from the floor and throw it into the trash.
âThere. All done. Looks much better now,â I muse as I gaze around the university hallway. So many things still need to be done, but the painters have done a fabulous job of fixing the walls at least. The floors and the staircase are still being renovated, but it all looks so much better than it did before, after the inferno that took place.
I must say, being the one to burn it down and then having to clean all my shit up has been cathartic to say the least. And itâs nice to see the boys doing something that isnât completely destructive. Watching them toil around with a shovel and a paintbrush is actually rather ⦠sexy.
âWhat are you looking at, Pen?â Dylan muses, rolling the paintbrush around the walls where the painters havenât been yet.
âEnjoying the view?â Ali adds as he throws a piece of broken furniture in the trash. âI know I am.â
âPervs,â Felix says as he gets up from cleaning the floor by hand.
âDamn right I am,â I retort. âAnd proud of it.â
I mean, I donât care if they caught me lurking.
They know I like watching them.
Ali high-fives me, and Dylan pulls up his white button-down, then slides the brush across his abs, avoiding the bullet wound. âYeah, you like this?â
âFML.â Felix sighs out loud and grabs his cigarettes. But the second he tries to light one, his father suddenly comes up behind him and snatches it from his hands.
âNo smoking inside.â
Felix grumbles, âYouâre all going to be the end of me.â
âIâm sure youâll be glad to hear youâre done for today,â his father replies.
âWhat? All of us?â Dylan asks, pausing with his brush midair.
When his father nods, Ali immediately drops the broom he was holding. âSweet.â
âBut I expect you all back tomorrow morning, same time sharp,â he says.
âAw â¦â Dylan groans.
âWeâre almost finished,â I muse.
âOnly got the whole of the Skull & Serpent house left.â
âWeâve got Penelopeâs father to help there,â Ali says. âIâm sure he doesnât need a bunch of lazy students to clean that shit.â
Dylan folds his arms. âBesides, we werenât the ones who destroyed that place.â
âTechnically, you were, since all of this fuckery points back to the four of you,â his father says, and he places a hand on Aliâs and Dylanâs shoulders. âSo be glad cleaning in your vacation week is the only thing Iâm asking you to do.â
He pats them on the back. âNow get out of here and enjoy the rest of your day.â
In the cafeteria, Kayla, Crystal, Jeremy, and Calvin are already waiting on us at a table.
Felix grumbles with a tray that carries only a single cup of coffee. âDo we have to?â
Dylan shoves his elbow into his waist. âBe nice.â
âI am being fucking nice,â he seethes back.
âWe can do this for her,â Ali says, taking a bite from his apple. âBesides, her friends arenât bad.â
âHey, girl,â Jeremy says as we approach, patting the seat next to him. âPlenty of room here.â
âGot space for these boys too?â I ask.
Kayla makes a face and takes a big breath, but Crystalâs soft nudge gets her over her reservations quickly. âYeah, yeah.â She scoots up to allow for more room. âThere are more chairs over there.â She points at another table. âNo oneâs sitting there so you can grab âem.â
âSorry weâre late,â I say as I sit down.
âStill helping with the big clean, eh?â Calvin asks. âTrying to score extra points?â
I smile. âSort of.â
Dylan whispers into my ear, âThey donât know?â
I shake my head. âBetter keep it that way.â
âBetter keep what?â Kayla asks.
âOh, nothing,â Dylan replies. âJust some sex talk.â
Her eyes widen, and she makes a weird face.
God, why does he always embarrass me?
âSo yâall are still together?â Kayla asks.
A blush forms on my cheeks, but Ali swings his arm around me, pulling me close. âYup.â
âWait ⦠as in all three of you?â Calvin asks. âWow, way to go, Pen. Triple dicking.â
Now Iâm blushing even harder.
âHowâs the Alpha Psi doing?â I ask to change the subject.
âOh, the girls are fine,â Kayla replies, smiling. âThe renovation of your sisterâs room is well on its way. It wasnât cheap, but it had to be done.â
âThatâs good to hear,â I say.
âBut I just wanna know ⦠is it all over now?â Crystal asks.
âWhat is?â Felix says.
âThe one who threatened her, who set that fire in the Alpha Psi house, and maybe even the school ⦠Did they catch him?â
Ali, Dylan, and Felix all look at each other, and then at me, like theyâre waiting for me to tell my friends the truth. But Iâm not sure Iâll ever tell the full story of what happened. Of Dylanâs father, the shoot-out, my sister, all of it.
âYes, theyâre gone,â I say, swallowing. âFor good.â
Dylan breathes a sigh of relief.
âBut you know who did it, then?â Jeremy asks.
Felix frowns. âIs it important?â
âWell â¦â Jeremy shifts in his seat, intimidated by Felixâs taunting gaze. âI donât know, I just figured after all the damage he did.â
âItâs done. Over. It wonât happen again,â Felix says, and he takes a gulp of his coffee.
Crystal sighs and nods. âIâm glad. I donât need to know who it was. I just want to know that itâs over. Itâs about time this school became boring again.â
Everyone laughs, and the tension breaks.
Felixâs phone buzzes, and he picks it up. âPen ⦠Time.â
âTime?â I mutter. I didnât think itâd slip by this fast.
âOur appointment,â he adds.
âRight,â I say as I get up.
âOh, got somewhere important to be already?â Calvin asks.
âHope it isnât one of those sex-talk things you mentioned,â Jeremy muses.
Kayla grumbles, âCringe. I donât want to hear it.â
I laugh. âNo, weâre going to RINGOâs.â
âWait ⦠that tattoo parlor down in Crescent Vale City?â Kayla asks.
âYouâre getting a tattoo?â Crystal mutters, like she couldnât fathom me getting one.
âYeah, I already got one long ago with my sis,â I reply.
âAwesome! Can I see it?â Crystal pleads, putting up some big, cute eyes.
âAh, Iââ
âWeâre out of time, ladies,â Dylan muses as he gets up and tugs me along with him. âLetâs go, Pen.â
âWeâve got somewhere to be,â Ali adds. âSee ya all later.â
âIâll show my tats to you next time,â I tell everyone, and I add a wink.
My skin stings, but itâs nothing I canât handle. Iâve gotten a tattoo before. I just forgot what it felt like.
âAll done,â the tattoo artist says as he slides away in his chair to grab a mirror.
I lift my shirt a little farther up, revealing my under boob, and I check out my tattoo right underneath. An elongated set of words strewn across my chest in beautiful calligraphy.
Felix. Dylan. Alistair.
A smirk forms on my lips as I turn to them. âWhat do you think?â
âPerfect,â Dylan replies.
Alistair nods too. âI like it.â
I turn to Felix, who just studies it, and his tongue slowly runs across his teeth. âExactly how it should be.â
âWell, Iâm glad youâre happy,â the tattoo artist says as he moves to the cash register. âCash or credit?â
Felix slaps down his credit card. âCredit.â
My alarm clock goes off, and I check the time. âShit, weâre late.â I grab Dylanâs and Aliâs hands and race out the door.
âHey, wait on me,â Felix says, and he follows suit.
âCâmon, itâs just down the road,â I say, and I drag them all the way to Fiâs Cups And Cakes.
âItâs only been a minute. Relax,â Dylan says.
We cross the street, and I check my phone several times to hurry us up. âHere it is.â
The second we all step inside, my motherâs eyes homing in on us almost make me drop my bag.
Itâs the first time sheâs seeing me with the boys.
The same boys who hung out with my sister.
The same boys who carry some of the blame.
I wave awkwardly and approach the table sheâs sitting at with a steaming cup of tea in her hands. There are just enough chairs for us all, and when I sit down, she picks up her tea.
âHi,â I say.
She takes a sip before responding.
âPen,â she says. âIâm glad youâre okay.â She eyes the boys next to me with mistrust. âBut them â¦â
The air is uncomfortable.
The server comes and takes the boysâ orders, but when they say nothing, I fill in for them, âFour coffees, please. Black.â
The server leaves again, but the whole café still feels too small for all of us sitting at this table.
âMom,â I mutter.
âIs he dead?â
I nod, and she sucks in a hampered breath.
âIâm sorry,â I say, and I reach for her hand.
âI almost lost a second daughter,â she mutters, tears welling up in her eyes. âMy only one left.â
I canât let her cry like that. I jump up from my seat and circle around the table, and I hug her tight. We cry and smile and hug so tightly I never want to let go.
âAfter your father told me what happened, I thought I almost lost you,â she murmurs.
âIâm not going anywhere. Not anytime soon. I love you, Mom.â I pull back and look her in the eyes, crying too. âI avenged her.â
She smiles through her tears. âIâm proud of you.â When I pull away, her eyes are already fixated on the guys. âWhat about them?â
I sit back down on my seat again.
âWhy are they with you now?â she asks.
âThey helped me kill the man responsible,â I explain.
Felix and Ali nod. Dylan swallows. âHe was my father.â
Her face contorts. âThen you know that rot grows deep.â
I grasp Dylanâs hand, settling him. I know itâs hard for him. He lost a father that night, no matter how evil.
âI know what my father did was unforgivable. But I am not my father,â Dylan says. âAnd I will spend every day of the rest of my life proving that to your daughter.â He leans in. âAnd I promise to you, I will take good care of her.â
Her lips grow thinner. âI know what you did with Eve â¦â
âI loved her,â Dylan says, and I squeeze his hand. âJust like I love Penelope.â
âAnd the others?â she asks.
Felix grabs my thigh.
âSheâs ours as much as we are hers,â Felix says.
âYes,â Alistair adds. âWeâd take a bullet for her.â
âAnd you think you can claim my daughter after being responsible for the death of the other?â she seethes.
âMom,â I mutter. âI love them.â
She stares at me for a moment with her jaw dropped. And I donât think Iâve ever seen her this amazed.
âYou ⦠love them?â
âYes,â I say.
The server returns with our cups of coffee, but the silence is brutal and feels like it lasts an eternity until she finally leaves again.
âSo you love those boysâ¦â my mother murmurs.
âAnd I donât intend to stop,â I say. âEver.â
Aliâs and Felixâs grips on my arm strengthen.
My mother sighs, defeat showing on her face. âI just pray you made the right decision.â
âIâll protect her with my life,â Ali says.
âAnd Iâll kill anyone who dares to hurt her,â Felix adds.
âEven yourself?â my mother retorts.
A soft smile spreads on my lips. âIâll kill them myself if it ever comes to that.â
Dylan looks at me, sporting a smirk.
I know he likes it when I get violent.
My mother snorts. âWell, sounds like youâve found yourself some boys that fit you.â
âWhat can I say?â I muse. âLike mother, like daughter.â
She smiles, and it brings warmth to my heart. âI guess I may have told you a bit too much about my life and how I met your dad.â
âNope. It gave me all the inspiration I needed,â I retort, and I wink.
âSheâs a real firecracker, this one,â Dylan says, licking his lips. âAnd I wouldnât have it any other way.â
âAs long as you protect her,â Mom says.
âUntil we die,â Ali replies.
âHow do I know for sure?â she asks.
All the boys raise their shirts in unison, showing off their new tattoos across their torsos.
My name.
She gasps.
âShe belongs to us,â Felix says, lowering his shirt. He grabs my face and makes me look at him, the affection in his dark eyes impossible to ignore. âAnd we belong to her.â
