Chapter 27-PBI's Mole

Roweena

"His name is Jack Reynolds."

Seriously? Roe thought. That idiot that tried to rape me is the one that set us up. Adrian, ask her what she told him about me.

Adrian nodded. "What exactly did you tell him about Roe?"

"I told him that she was an uppity bitch, and that she deserved anything that came to her."

"Why?" Adrian asked.

"I hate her. She's always around here, flirting with everybody and taking all the attention from me."

Adrian looked at Joe, silently asking him if there was anything else he wanted Adrian to ask her. When Joe shook his head no, Adrian released her from his control.

Angie was surprised to see everyone looking at her with varying degrees of hatred on their faces when she looked away from Adrian. "What?" She asked, looking around the room.

"Angie, why on earth would you tell that man to kidnap Roe and them?" Joe asked her.

"I didn't do anything." She denied.

"Angie, Adrian here is a vampire, and he can read minds. He asked you questions, and you answered them truthfully." Joe shook his head. "I can't believe a member of my own pack has betrayed me like this."

Angie stood there for a minute stunned, then started scowling at Joe. "If you would run this pack right, and ban her from it, everything would be perfect."

"Yeah." Roe said. "Then whoever the next pretty face is, she'd have to go too."

"Of course. I've already gotten rid of three sluts." Angie said, waving her hand dismissively.

"I think she's lost her mind." Shane said, staring at her.

"She is definitely crazy. After she got rid of Joe, she was going to go after Marcy next. She wants to be Luna of the pack." Adrian told Joe.

"What!" Joe yelled. Before anyone could stop him, he had stepped up to Angie, partially shifted so he had claws and raked them across her throat. Blood sprayed through the air, covering everyone in the room with stripes of red. "No one messes with my Marcy." He seethed.

'Call his mate.' Roe mouthed to the man named Carl.

He nodded back at her, then a few seconds later mouthed 'She's coming.'

They were all standing still, watching Joe as he stared at Angie's body, snarling and growling. They were afraid to move because Joe's wolf was obviously very much in control. The only person that had a chance of calming him down without getting hurt was his mate, Marcy.

Marcy slowly opened the door to the conference room, and didn't seem surprised by what she saw. Apparently Carl told her what was going on in here. Roe thought to herself. Marcy eased her way into the bloody room and over to her mate. "Joe, honey." She spoke very quietly and calmly. "Joe, baby look at me. I'm right here, I'm all right." As she talked, Joe slowly turned his head toward her.

"Mate." His wolf growled.

"Yes, baby."

"Mine." He growled again.

"Yes, baby. All yours." She spoke calmly and slowly reached her hand up to touch his face. When she touched him, he turned his face to smell her wrist. Then he grabbed her and pulled her to him, hugging her tightly. The tension slowly eased out of him as he smelled the scent of his mate in his arms.

Roe broke the silence. "I do believe we all need a shower before Agent Maitland gets here."

Joe raised his head and looked at her.

She smiled at him. "We might want to get this room cleaned, too."

Joe nodded, still not fully back to himself. Carl stepped forward and took charge. "Luna Marcy, Alpha Joe, why don't you two go upstairs and get ready for our next guest."

That was a very diplomatic way of ordering the Luna to clean the Alpha up. Roe smiled to herself.

"Frank and John, you two get rid of this body. Then go clean up. Everyone else, go clean yourselves up. I'll get someone else to clean up the room." Carl told them. They all moved to obey him, except Roe, Shane, and Adrian.

"Where can we shower and get some clean clothes?" Roe asked Carl.

"Janie will show y'all to a guest room and bring you some clothes." He told her.  "After you shower, feel free to stop by the kitchen and grab something to eat."

"Okay. Thank you." She replied.

A couple of minutes later, a girl walked into the doorway. "You called for me Beta Carl?"

"Yes, Janie. Please escort these three to one of the guest rooms, then take them some clothes. They need to get cleaned up before our other guest arrives." Carl told her.

"Yes, sir." She nodded her head to Carl, then turned to Roe and the guys. "Please follow me." She turned and walked down the hall and up the stairs. She walked to the third room on the right and opened the door. "Here you are. I'll be back shortly with a change of clothes for each of you."

"Thank you."  Roe said as Janie left the room.

After they had all showered, changed clothes, and gotten something to eat, they went back downstairs to Joe's office.  The door was open, so Roe walked in, followed by Shane and Adrian.  Joe was sitting behind his desk, staring at the wall.

Roe walked up to the desk. "Are you okay?"

"Huh?"  Joe said, looking up.  "Oh, yeah.  I'll be fine.  It's been a long time since I lost my temper like that."

"It's completely understandable." Adrian told him. "You were dealing with someone who was threatening your mate, and had threatened Roe."

"I know, but I'm usually more diplomatic about things." Joe sighed.

"Joe, everybody understands what you did and why." Roe said. "No male wolf would have let her live after threatening their mate."

"You're right, and I wouldn't have, but I should've at least had a trial for her."

"Joe, if you're worried about backlash among the pack, hold a trial for yourself. Let PBI do it." Roe shrugged. "They'd be fair, and your pack would get the reassurance that you're not above the laws."

"That's a good idea, Roe. I may talk to Special Agent Maitland about it while he's here." Joe nodded.

You know they'll never convict him for something like that. Shane told her through the link. It falls under disciplining a pack member.

I know that. Roe replied. That's why I suggested it. I know they won't convict him, but it'll make him and his pack feel better about it.

What do you mean?

He feels that he overstepped. He's afraid his pack does too, and they very well may feel that way, but I doubt it. And if they do, turning himself in to PBI for a hearing and them clearing him, will reassure his pack that he's not gone rogue or anything, and that this was a one time thing. That he's not going to just randomly start killing people that piss him off.

Oh, I understand now. Shane said.

Good thinking Roe. Adrian said. This will absolve him of the blame he's carrying and reassure the pack at the same time.

That was my intention, too. Though we may have a hard time convincing Agent Maitland to go along with it, considering it's not really their job, as Shane said. Roe replied.

We'll talk to him, and make him see that it would be best for this pack, even if it's not on the record, as they say. Adrian told her.

So, you're saying that he could make a statement about how he's heard all the evidence, and there's nothing to support doing an investigation. Roe said thoughtfully.

Exactly. Adrian said.

That might work. That way, he doesn't have to go to his superiors with it, and Joe and the pack get the reassurance that they need. Shane agreed.

KNOCK. KNOCK.

"Come in." Joe said.

Joe's Beta Carl opened the door and said, "Special Agent Maitland is here to see you, Sir."

"Bring him in." Joe replied.

Roe motioned for Shane and Adrian to sit down on the brown leather couch on the left side of the room. As they did, she took one of the two matching chairs in front of Joe's desk, and angled it slighty so that she could see Joe, and be able to watch Special Agent Maitland walk in the door, and then sat down.

Beta Carl walked just past the office door and turned around, facing the person that was following him. "Alpha Joe will see you now, Special Agent Maitland." He said as he motioned to the open doorway.

Special Agent Maitland nodded to him and said "Thank you." Then turned and walked in the door and stopped. "What? What are you doing here?" He asked Roe, stunned by her presence.

Joe looked past Special Agent Maitland to Beta Carl, who was standing just outside the door. "Shut the door please, Beta." Carl nodded and shut the door behind Special Agent Maitland.

"Come in Special Agent Maitland, we have a lot to discuss." Joe told him as he motioned to the seat next to Roe.

Special Agent Maitland visibly collected himself, walked across the room and sat down next to Roe. "What is going on here?"

"I believe you've met Roe, and Shane and Adrian." Joe said to Special Agent Maitland.

"Yes, but we haven't been formally introduced." He replied.

"Okay. This is Adrian Vladimescu, coven leader to be of the Istrati Coven, and Shane Girouard, soon to be Alpha of the Woodbridge Pack." Joe said, motioning to each as he introduced them. "And this is Roweena Wynter Cavenaugh."

Special Agent Maitland didn't immediately catch on to Roe's importance. He was too stunned by the fact that he had detained two very important people. He shook his head. "I do apologize." he said to the two men. "Apparently I was given some bad information." He turned to Roe. "And you are Roweena Cavenaugh, correct?"

"Legally, yes." Roe answered with a smile. "But you would probably know of me as Roweena Wynter."

"Roweena Wynter? The witch, Roweena Wynter?" He asked, visibly paling.

"Yes." Roe said. "But none of us are upset with you, Special Agent Maitland. We are aware that you were given bad information. We also know that if you had succeeded in taking us to your headquarters you would've found out who we really were, and released us."

"Well, yes. Of course." Special Agent Maitland quickly replied. "And you don't have to keep saying Special Agent. I'm not all that special."

Roe smiled and nodded at him, acknowledging his statement.

"That's not why you're here today, though." Joe said. "We found the source of your misinformation, and it's been dealt with. It was one of my pack members, trying to get rid of Roe."

"Oh, well okay then.  What about that military group that took you from me?"

"That's one of the reasons we called you here today."  Roe said.  "We escaped, but they're the ones behind the kidnappings that have been happening around here recently.  There are other people still being held captive there, and we need your help to rescue them."

"You want my help?  Or you want PBI's help?"

"PBI's help, actually.  It's a big facility and it's being run by the military."  Roe paused. "Or at least it's being run by a military man, anyway."

"That's what the man that took you said.  I've been researching Major Marsden, but without more information, I've hit a roadblock."  He shook his head.  "I don't know where to go from here."

"His name is Major Charles Marsden, and he looks to be in his fifties.  He's an older man with gray hair."

"You've seen him?"

"Yes, I have, and he's lost his mind.  He's kidnapping people, trying to make a vampire-werewolf hybrid."

"What?  That's impossible."

"That's what I said, but he told me that's what he's trying to do.  And he's very... well, almost fanatical about it.  The men I saw that he has working for him are an odd bunch.  One's part werewolf and doesn't seem to know it.  One's human, and the other one I'm not sure what he is."

"What do you mean?"

"We all three saw them, but none of us know what he is.  He's not a werewolf or a vampire, and he said that he'd been told that they were housing criminals.  His name is Boudreau.  The human one, Parker said he'd been told basically the same thing, but that they were experimenting on the rogues to see why they were that way."

"And you believed them?"  Special Agent Maitland asked, disbelievingly.

"We all three heard them say it, and we all thought they were telling the truth.  Boudreau said he knew they had some humans there, but that they seemed crazy.  Parker seemed stunned to find out that there were humans being held there."

"If there are humans being held by the military, I'm going to have to involve them."  Special Agent Maitland said, cautiously.

"I thought you would."  Roe told him.  "I really would prefer you to involve them, especially if Major Charles gets arrested."

"Okay." He said, sounding surprised at her readily agreeing to human involvement.

"I'd like to be there, to show you what we know about the facility and where it is."

"I'm not sure about that."  He hedged.

"I'm sure you can work it out with the military.  Just tell them that we're witnesses and we can't find it on a map, we'll have to go there in order to find it.  Also, you'll probably need a couple of Alphas and some high ranking vampires to calm them down.   We'd probably work for that.  Call us behavioral experts or something."

"I could probably swing that."  He said thoughtfully.  "I'm not sure about all three of you, though."

Shane growled at him, and Roe said "We're a package deal.  We go together."

"Why?"

Roe pulled down the neck of her shirt, first one side then the other, showing him her marks.  "I trust that you'll keep this to yourself?"

"How is that possible?" Special Agent Maitland asked, stunned.  "Usually when you get a second mating mark, the first one fades if it hadn't already."

"I'm a witch."  Roe said dismissively.  "I can do things that aren't exactly normal."

"But, I don't understand-"

"Agent Maitland, that's as much information on the subject that I'll give you at this time. It's personal and does not have anything to do with your job." Roe replied sternly.

"Well, okay then." He said unhappily.

"There are a couple of other things we need to discuss with you."  Bad news first. Roe thought. "We've also discovered that you have a mole under your command in the PBI."

"I do not." He deinied, leaning forward in his chair.

"Yes, you do." Roe told him. "Joe's pack member was giving him information to give you. I believe the same man has been giving Major Charles information too."

Special Agent Maitland took a deep breath and leaned back.  "What makes you think that?"

"I overheard a conversation between Parker, Savage and Boudreau about who was feeding them information. They were talking about me, and said that Jack had told them that his boss said I was human."  Roe told him.

"Son of a bitch, that means that they're on my team."

"My pack member said she was feeding information to a man at PBI named Jack Reynolds."  Joe told him.

"Jack Reynolds?  Are you sure?"  He asked.   "She could be lying."

"I'm sure.  She was hypnotized by Adrian at the time.  She was only able to tell the truth."  Joe said.

"Let me talk to her."

"I'm afraid that's not possible."  Joe told him, then sighed.  "I lost my temper."

"So she's dead?"

"Yes."  Joe answered quietly.

Special Agent Maitland nodded, deep in thought.

"Are you okay?"  Roe asked him.

"Well, yeah.  You actually have made something a lot easier for me."  He said, smiling.  "That man has been nothing but a thorn in my side since I took over this group.  I've wanted to get rid of him, but I haven't had sufficient evidence to take to my superiors, until now."

"Glad we could help."  Roe said smiling back at him.  "And that brings us to the other issue we wanted to discuss with you."

"What's that?" Special Agent Maitland asked.

"Joe lost his temper and killed Angie, the pack member who was feeding Jack information.  We were wondering if you could do an informal hearing on the subject and tell Joe and his pack if he did anything wrong?"

"Pack discipline isn't really our purview.  As far as we're concerned, you're well within your rights as an Alpha to dispose of someone who was betraying your pack."  Special Agent Maitland said, slightly confused.

Joe nodded.

"Actually, Agent Maitland, it would put the pack's minds at ease if you would listen to the information about what happened, and tell the pack whether or not there was cause to investigate further."  Roe said.  "I believe that if you tell the pack that Joe has brought this to your attention, you've listened to what happened, and that you believe he was well within his rights, it would help them retain confidence in their Alpha and pack.  That is if it's what you believe.  We wouldn't want you to lie about it."

"I wouldn't lie about it."

"I know that."  Roe told him. "I just wanted to make sure that you knew that was not what we were asking you to do."

He nodded.  "I don't see why that would be a problem.  We can deal with that while we're waiting on the military to figure out what they're going to do."

Roe yawned and rubbed her eyes.

"It's been a very long day.  Why don't we pick this up in the morning?"  Joe asked.  "Agent Maitland, you're welcome to spend the night."

"That's fine with me."  Special Agent Maitland said.   "I'll call my military contacts and the rest of my team, except Reynolds, and get them down here too."

"Okay."  Roe said, nodding.  "We'll see you in the morning."  She walked out the door and back upstairs to the room they had showered in earlier with Adrian and Shane following her.  They were too exhausted to even bother taking their clothes off as they climbed into bed.  As soon as their heads hit the pillows, they were asleep.
