Mid-Thirties Slightly Hot Mess Female Seeking Billionaire: Chapter 10
Mid-Thirties Slightly Hot Mess Female Seeking Billionaire (Single and Sassy in the city Book 2)
Ethan
âHey, Ethan. Have you seen the new intranet board recently?â Jacksonâs voice sounds like heâs bemused as I answer the phone in the early hour of the morning.
âNo. Why would I be looking at that? Iâm doing actual work, not wasting my time online.â I huff as I stare at the stack of papers on my desk. I have a million things to do, and I havenât been able to concentrate on any of them because of a certain young lady in copywriting.
âWell, turns out one of your favorite employees has put aâ¦â
âWhoâs one of my favorite employees?â I cut him off.
âYou know.â
âAre you talking about Edith?â I ask. âWhat has she done now?â
âNot Edith, your other favorite female at the company.â
âI have no idea who youâre talking about,â I say, though my mind does flash to Sarah. But thatâs ridiculous because I donât even know her well. Thereâs no way that sheâs a favorite employee of mine. I donât even know what her work ethic is like. I donât know if sheâs talented. I donât know anything. I know I like her, but thereâs no actual basis for my like.
âYou know, that girl in copywriting.â
âSarah is not one of my favorite employees,â I blurt out and instantly regret it.
âOh, so you do remember her name.â He chuckles.
âWhat is going on, Jackson?â
âI think you need to pull up the intranet.â
âWhy?â
âBecause Sarah has posted something.â
âShe has?â Iâm befuddled now. Didnât that just go up yesterday afternoon? What is she posting? I want to look but donât want to feel like I need to look. âWhat has she posted about?â
âI think youâre going to want to read this for yourself,â Jackson says, chuckling. âOr I can read it to you.â
âI do not have time to play games right now, Jackson. I have work to do, and Iâm pretty sure you have work to do, as well.â
âUnlike you, Mr. Rosser, I know when to leave my work at home. Life is all about balance. You work as hard as you can, and then you play as hard as you can.â
âWell, it doesnât sound like youâre playing hard to me, right now, seeing as weâre on the phone.â
âIâll have you know that I just finished a date with a very beautiful supermodel who Iâm not going to name.â
âTheyâre all very beautiful supermodels, Jackson.â
âWhat are you saying? That I only date supermodels?â
âIâm not saying that. It just seems to be the case.â
âIâd date Sarah,â he says as if I want to hear that. âDo you know if sheâs seeing anyone?â
âWhat? What are you talking about?â The tone in my voice is steel-like, and I can feel my shoulders tense.
âOh, actually, Iâm pretty sure that sheâs not seeing someone.â He laughs again. âMaybe sheâll be up for a date with me.â
âJackson, what is going on? Why are you interested in Sarah, and howâd you know sheâs single?â Iâm getting pissed off now.
âWhy, are you interested if sheâs single?â he asks innocently. âWhat about the no-fraternization policy?â
âJackson,â I shout. âI do not have time for these games.â
âPull up the intranet, Ethan. Trust me, youâre going to want to read this.â
âIâm going to go. Iâ¦â
âMid-thirties, slightly hot mess female seeking billionaire,â he says loudly and then clears his throat.
âHuh?â Iâm about to hang up, but now Iâm confused. âWhat are you talking about?â
âThatâs the title of the post that little Miss Sarah Kahan just posted to the intranet at one twelve a.m.â
âShe posted what?â For a couple of seconds, I feel disappointment. Is she a gold digger, after all? Did she see my article, and now sheâs trying to get her hooks into me? Because how many other billionaires work at Rosser International besides Jackson, and Jackson hasnât yet inherited his fortune. Though, heâs still worth hundreds of millions of dollars from his trust. I sigh in disappointment at the thought that Sarah is like all the other women, after all.
âYou want to hear more?â Jackson asks as if thatâs even in question.
âGo on, read it. Wait, let me get up from my desk and pour a stiff drink. I think Iâm going to need it before I hear what this says.â
âOh, youâre definitely going to need it,â he says, chuckling. âIt seems that little Miss Sarah is not so dowdy and innocent.â
âWhat do you mean by innocent?â I think back to her dancing on the table. Those were not the dance moves of an innocent woman.
âI donât know. I figured, anyone thatâs coming to work with thick-ass glasses, hair in a bun, and looking like some sort of Great-Aunt Mildred that works in the library, isnât exactly trying to pull at work, right?â
âAnd whatâs wrong with that? Are you trying to say that she should be trying to pull? You knowâ¦â
âI know, Ethan. Thereâs a no-fraternization policy at the company. That doesnât mean that women donât try and look good for men, and that doesnât mean there arenât lots of people banging in the office.â
âWho is?â
âThatâs not important right now, Ethan. Do you or do you not want to hear what little Miss Sarah has posted?â
âFine,â I say, stretching my legs and heading to my bar. I grab the crystal decanter of whiskey and pour it into a glass. Iâm not even going to bother with ice. I have a feeling I donât need it. I take a sip. âWait a second. Did she call herself a hot mess?â
âYep,â he says. âI guess if sheâs nothing, sheâs honest.â
âMid-thirties, slightly hot mess female seeking billionaire,â I repeat the words over. âSheâs literally crazy. Does she want to get fired or something?â
âI donât know,â he says, âbut you might want to fire her after you hear exactly what is in the post, which you still havenât heard yet, and Iâm not sure why you havenât wanted to hear yet. Is it because youâre scared thatâ¦â
âIâm not scared of anything, Jackson. Go on. Tell me exactly what it says.â
He clears his throat, and thereâs a long silence.
âHello? Are you there?â
âI just want to make sure youâre really ready for this.â
âJackson, youâre getting on my nerves. Tell me what it says.â
âHold on, Ethan. Donât get your panties in a twist.â
âJackson, I will fire you if you do not tell me what it says right now.â
âWe both know that youâre never going to fire me. We both know that you couldnât live without me. We both know thatâ¦â
âJackson, you sound like a dick right now.â
âMaybe thatâs because I am a dick,â he says. âOr wait, maybe itâs because I have a dick. You know what that supermodel asked me tonight?â
âWhat?â I groan as I jump up and head toward my computer. âIf you donât tell me what it says, I will just pull it up and read it.â
âShe said to me she wanted to see if the rumors were true.â
âHuh? What rumors?â
âAbout my twelve-inch cock,â Jackson says, and I roll my eyes.
âDude, youâre like a brother. I love you. You do not have a twelve-inch cock.â
âYou donât know how big it is unless youâve been peeking.â
âJackson.â
âYeah?â
âRead the rest of that post now,â I say, âor Iâll just find it myself andâ¦â
âFine,â he says. âOkay, should I say it in my voice or in her voice?â
âWhat?â Iâm exasperated now. I am about to go off on him.
âI could say it in a really high-pitched voice,â he says, squeaking. âMid-thirties, slightly hot mess female seeking billionaire. Maybe Ethan Rosser.â He starts chortling. âOh, my gosh. Was that too far? Tell me it was too far. No, it wasnât. It wasâ¦â
âJackson. You know what, dude? Iâm going to read it myself. Thank you for letting me know. I am done with you and your bullshit.â
âMy bullshit? Why are you so upset? I thought you would be happy that I was letting you know that one of your top employees is soliciting for a billionaire on our company intranet.â
âIt was your idea to do the intranet.â
âI know, and I thought it was a great idea.â
âAre you going to tell me what it says or not?â
âFine. Okay, are you listening to me?â
âIâve been listening, Jackson.â Iâm infuriated now.
âTo whom it may concern,â he starts, âthis is a long shot. Iâm seeking a billionaire. I will also settle for a millionaire. Sorry, Iâm not interested in any salesmen looking to sell me a time-share or part of their animal balloon company (been there, done that). Iâm not a gold digger, though you may not believe that. I have references. Ask all my broke exes and my best friends.
âTo be fair, Iâm not a glamorous model, actress, or professional dancer. I do, however, take pole dancing lessons (for fun, of course, not dollar bills). I am an educated, (I still have the student loans to prove it), open-minded, (toy stores are fun and not for games), fairly cute (when I try), only a little curvy, (those last thirty pounds donât want to leave), single female. I want to be swept off my feet, wined, dined, and bedded in ways that make me forget my name. I have a job (that I hate) with a boss that makes me want to jump off a cliff. However, my friends make up for the day job. Iâm ready for an adventure, and possibly a penthouse with a maid and a design budget. If interested, please respond before Monday morning so I donât have to go in to work. Love, Sultry Sassy Sarah.â Jackson stops, and Iâm dumbfounded and struggling to comprehend what I just heard. My heart is racing, and I almost want to laugh.
âYou are not serious,â I say finally. âThis cannot be real.â
âIâm one hundred percent serious,â he says, chuckling like heâs just left a Dave Chappelle show.
âI do not believe that she posted that on the company intranet. Is she out of her mind?â
âAre you upset because she said she hates her job and she has a boss that makes her want to jump off a cliff, or because she posted this?â
âI very much doubt sheâs talking about me.â I pause. âDo you think sheâs talking about me?â
âI donât know, but possibly.â
âYou know what? I have to go,â I say and hang up before he can answer. I bring up the company intranet and look at the message myself. I cannot believe that Sarah has posted this. I cannot believe she said she hates her job after I asked her to create a jingle. Iâve given her an amazing opportunity, and this is what she says?
I press my lips together. I want to find out her phone number, call her, and tell her off, but I know it is way too early to do such a thing. Instead, I log in to the HR files to find her company email address and send her a message.
Sarah, this is your boss, Ethan Rosser. We wonât be able to meet tomorrow, but I would like to see you in my office first-thing Monday morning. Do not be late.
