The glow of the moonlight that hit her sword lit her small room as she continued to wipe the blade with a small cloth in her hand.
She had been in her room all night, getting ready for the battle she was soon going to, preparing herself for the enemy she was going to face.
Tonight was the night Vlad was going to die.
Elektra gave Henry and Angela specific instructions about tonight. They were going to the south woods and ambush the place where Vlad was staying. Both of them asked her from where she received the information. However, the look in her eyes and her firm answer telling them that it was taken care of, made their questions died down.
Nevertheless, it had gotten them curious. Especially Henry. He had given her the look he always gave her whenever he thought she was keeping things from him. It made her uncomfortable and drowning in guilt. If Henry knew she had worked with the hunters, he would go ballistic but Craig, the vampire hunter was her only hope.
She needed to find Vlad as soon as possible, not only for her revenge but also for the sake of humans. Besides, finding Vlad means that she was one step closer to find Magnus, the bastard who was responsible for this whole thing.
Throwing the cloth away, she lifted her sword to the light and saw it shone beautifully under it. Such a beautiful thing yet so dangerous.
She remembered a time where Henry had told her she was similar to the sword. Beautiful yet dangerous. She had punched him in the arm for that. Never in a day had she actually thought of herself beautiful.
âSingle for my whole seventeen years...I probably end up as a cat lady.â She said.
Her attention averted to window when she heard a gentle knock on it. Quickly, she hid her sword beneath her bed and made her way to the window.
Her heart did a flip when she saw that handsome man who was smiling at her, gesturing her to open the window.
Her brain filled with question and heart filled with anticipation, she did not wait any longer to open the window and pulled him in.
He stood in front of her, his body towering over her and his eyes meeting hers, with a small smile on his face.
Heart, be still. She chided in her thoughts.
âHey.â He greeted breathlessly.
âHey. What brings you here at this kind of hour?â She folded her arms together as she glanced at the clock on the wall that showed her that it was 11.30 pm.
âI didnât see you this whole day.â He replied.
It was true. He had been busy the whole day. At school, he had to meet up with the principal and he went back early due to a meeting with a client. He did not pick up Kate today either. Owen picked her up instead. She missed him, she realized but it gave her an opportunity to distance herself from him.
She smiled slyly at him with her hands placed on her waist. âAnd you decided to drop in my room when itâs almost midnight?â
âYup.â He answered with a toothy grin.
Her comeback faltered at the tip of her tongue when he took her by surprise, wrapping his arms around her and pulled her close to him.
âI missed you.â
Those three words literally made her heart picked up its beat as she buried her face in his chest. The smell of his cologne did not make it any better either.
Damn it heart. Stop it!
She made a gap between them, though his arms still wrapped around her waist. She lifted her head to look at him with a sly smile playing on her lips.
âYou sounded like my lover there, prince.â She teased.
The glint and the intensity of his dark brown eyes made her smirk faltered as she swallowed a lump in her throat. The way he looked at her definitely made her heart beat even faster.
Oh, come on! Be freaking still, for godâs sake.
This was seriously not going the way it planned. She swore to keep distance between the people she cared for so that they wonât be Magnusâ next target but clearly, she just could not keep herself away from them, especially him.
Elektra pulled away from his hold, his arms dropping to his side. Blake tilted his head at her, looking slightly confused.
Clearing her throat, she lifted her head at him. âSo...what are you really doing here?â She asked.
âI just wanted to see you. Geez, Ela. I did not know you donât want me to be here that much.â He replied.
Elektra frowned. âI do wa- Oh god....â She sighed. She really needed to keep her distance. Magnus had played this game into a completely new level and she did not want anyone to get hurt because of her.
She slumped onto the bed, covering her face with her hand before pushing her bangs away from her eyes.
She stayed there in silence, her eyes concentrating at the cream wall of her room. She felt her bed sunk and his cologne invaded her nostrils. However, Blake did not say anything, nor touched her.
âYou know, a little bird once told me...â He spoke, breaking the silence around them. Elektra did not turn to look at him as she kept on staring at the wall.
âShe told me that sometimes things happened and we canât prevent it from happening. She told me that it was not my fault that Owenâs dad died. I remembered when people used to say that to me and I never believed them, but when she told me; I believed her. I finally believed that it was not my fault...because she was right. We donât really have control on everything and sometimes things just happen. We shouldnât blame ourselves for the things we have no control of.â
Blakeâs words sunk in her. She touched her cheek when she felt something cold trail down it. She stared disbelievingly at the tears and before she knew it, she was wrapped into a strong embrace. Her face buried in his chest, his arms wrapped around her like a cocoon, making all the tears that she kept since Danielâs death came out pouring like raindrops.
She did not know how long she stayed in his arms crying like a baby, clenching onto his shirt like her life depends on it. All that she knew was she felt safe. She felt completely safe and relieved. It was like a part of her guilt and sorrow had disappeared through her tears. Being in Blakeâs embrace did that and in that moment, she knew she had just fallen in love with him even more.
He did not tell her that everything was going to be okay. He said nothing when she cried but held her tightly in his arms. Not only that, his words hit her. She was used to Henry, Chelsea and even Angela telling her that Danielâs death was not her fault. She never believed them. However, when Blake said those words to her with an explanation she used before, it erased a small part of guilt in her. Maybe it was because he understood what she was going through, or maybe because it was his comforting embrace. Nevertheless, he made her feel less guilty.
When all of her tears dried up, she loosened her hold on his shirt, smoothing it as it was definitely wrinkled.
âWho was that bird that told you?â She said, breaking the silence between them.
She heard him chuckle lightly. âYou know her.â
âShe sounds intelligent.â She spoke as she finally raised her head to look at him.
There was a soft smile playing on his lips and his eyes were twinkling with amusement. âDefinitely.â
Seeing that smile of his, she suddenly remembered what she was supposed to do. She did not want to do it. She had been really attached to him. Whom was she kidding? She loves him. She loves his eyes, his laughter. She loves his wicked smile and she wanted to protect that. She wanted to protect him.
Elektra immediately pushed herself away from him. She staggered when she saw hurt flashed in his eyes.
It was for his protection, she reminded herself.
âItâs late. You should go.â She said coldly.
He tried to give her a small smile but it looked strained. âI should, shouldnât I?â He answered softly with his head hung low.
Her tongue seemed to go numb as she watched him stood up from her bed and headed to the window.
With one leg over the window and the other in her room, he stopped and turned to look back at her.
âBlaming yourself will get you nowhere, Elektra. It will not get you out of the dark place but making you drown in it even deeper.â
With those words and a sad smile, he climbed out of her window and disappeared from her view.
Elektra slowly unclenched her fists and stared at her hands as she took in his words.
She was already drowning, ever from the start.
And the light she thought she once had found was slowly drifting away again.
***********************************
It has gotten colder since autumn has arrived. She tugged on her black long coat and buttoned its collar. Her eyes glanced at her companions who were surprisingly quiet. They walked alongside each other, eyes roaming over the forest. They had been discrete since she told them she knew where Vlad was hiding. They knew something was up but she was not telling any of them. It was her secret to keep.
The forest was quiet, the sound of stepped fallen leaves were the only soundtrack as they walked. The leaves were turning into a colour that reminded her of someoneâs eyes. She shook her thoughts of the owner of those eyes who sheâd just seen a few hours ago and focus on her mission.
They were going to ambush Vladâs cottage and he was going to die tonight.
Elektraâs heart picked up its beat and her feet stopped when her eyes met the small cottage at the edge of the forest.
Turning towards her companion, she placed her finger on her lips as she stared at both of them. They gave her a small nod, understanding her eyes, telling them to do what they had planned.
Henry disappeared from her sight and appeared nearer to the cottage as he let his senses roam all over the place before returning to her side and gave her a nod telling her that it was clear for the to ambush the cottage.
In a swift move, she ran towards the cottage and kicked down the door. The door fell to the ground revealing an empty home.
Releasing her grip on her sword, she walked into the cottage. The wooden floor creaked as she wondered around the room. It was a small cottage, most probably liveable from two persons. She Thereâs a small fireplace, which was lighted next to the made up bed. A small kitchen stove and a cupboard of jars were placed next to the closed brown door.
Needless to say, she was surprised. This place looked incredibly homey for a vile vampire.
âThereâs no one here.â Henry said, breaking the silence in the air as he closed the brown door, which he discovered was a toilet.
âI donât think heâs here.â Angela said as she went through those empty jars on the cupboard. âThese are all cooking materials. I donât think Vlad is the kind of vampire of eats normal food.â
Angela was right. Elektra did not take Vlad as that person. Besides, eating human food for a vampire is probably like breathing in air through your mouth. You feel nothing, not fullness, or satisfaction, nothing. Why would he waste time on human food?
âAnd I donât really think heâs a homey guy.â Angela added as she turned her head towards her. She saw how Henry nodded in agreement and she felt hope slipping from her fingers.
She had been fooled by that damn vampire hunter.
Her thoughts halted when she saw a book placed on the table facing to the only window in the cottage.
Holding up her hand in the air to stop he companions from talking, she walked towards the table. Slowly, her gloved hands picked up the book and opened it cautiously.
Elektraâs brows furrowed when she saw the first page empty. She flipped the page and no words were written on it. Unsatisfied, she flipped through the pages and stopped when she met a page with written words in it.
Tick tock, tick tock, Protector. Your time is running out. -M
Before she could try to understand those words, she heard Henry cried her name and the sound of glass breaking invading her ears.
Expecting to feel pain, she closed her eyes but felt none. All she felt was warmth and two strong arms wrapped around her tightly and protectively.
Slowly, she opened her eyes.
She heard a shaky gasp escaped her mouth, feeling blood draining from her as the book in her shaking hand slipped away and dropped the floor. Her heart clenched at the sight in front of her so painfully, making it difficult for her to breathe. A strangled choke escaped her mouth and everything around her seems to blur as her terrified eyes stare at the sight of a thick stake pierced through Henry Butlerâs chest.
