Chapter 241
Even After Death
Surprisingly, Ethan wasnât mad. Instead, he tossed away the cigarette in his hand.
Olivia was about to leave, but he didnât stop her. His voice rang coldly in the air. âOlivia, youâd better not
be lying.â
He stared straight at Olivia, who was leaving. He thought that she would come back, but she didnât
even turn around.
The wind put out the last bits of ember from the cigarette stub. Olivia was already gone from the
rooftop. Ethan looked up at the night sky above him. Heavy clouds covered the sky, so only a few stars
could be seen.
âWhat exactly is Olivia hiding?â he wondered.
He thought of her words that day. If Jeff wasnât the one who killed Leia, then who could it be?
âMr. Miller, Mrs. Miller has been gone for a while now.â Standing in the dark, Brent looked just like
Ethanâs shadow.
Ethan heaved a long sigh. âBrent, I want to reinvestigate Leiaâs incident.â
âIs it for Mrs. Millerâs sake?â Brent couldnât understand.
The incident was already set in stone, and it was also Ethanâs greatest taboo. Usually, he wouldnât
allow anyone to mention it, much less do anything about it.
If he wanted to reinvestigate the matter, he would be reopening his wounds. It might be many times
more painful than last time.
Ethan replied, âIt happened too suddenly back then. The evidence seemed solid, but I was furious
when I made the decision back then.
âIn the two years that followed, I lost myself in the sorrow of losing Leia, and I blamed Leiaâs death on
her. If â¦â Ethanâs arm trembled for an instant. âIf it truly wasnât Jeff, how should I face her?â
Many aspects of the incident werenât analyzed. Ethan was especially sensitive about this topic, so
everyone had been avoiding it without another thought.
âMr. Miller, thereâs evidence for what happened back then. Donât think too much about it.â
Ethan looked at Brent. âWhatâs Jeff like to you?â
Brent replied, âPutting this incident aside, he used to be gentle and elegant. He was also friendly and
generous. He was a good father, someone passionate about life.
âIf not for that incident, I would think heâs a good man.â
Ethan responded, âYes, if it werenât for that incident, everything wouldnât have changed.â
Brent felt something off about Ethanâs expression. âMr. Miller, youâre saying that â¦â
âHow much time did we take to figure out the truth after we discovered the body?â âAround a week.â
Ethan lit another cigarette. âThinking back on it, donât you think it went too smoothly? It feels like a hand
was creating a lead on purpose. We just had to follow the lead to find all the answers.â
Brent shook his head. âBut it was true that the victims had mental illnesses, and it was true that they
ended their own lives. âMr. Miller, I know you care about Mrs. Miller, but you canât twist the truth.â
Ethan looked up at Brent. âWhat are you trying to say?â
Brent replied, âI donât agree with the reinvestigation. Back then, you were shocked by the incident. Mrs.
Miller didnât know what you went through the past two years.
âIf this matter is brought up again, your wounds will have to be reopened. I fear that your illness will get
worse.â
Brent continued, âLetâs say that it truly wasnât Jeff who did it and thereâs someone behind the scenes.
âHow long did that person take to prepare everything? Is it a male or a female? What objectives do they
have?
âIf they wanted to separate you and Mrs. Miller, theyâve already achieved their goal. But recently, there
havenât been any changes to your life, Mr. Miller.
âYou didnât even meet anyone new.â
Ethan rubbed his temples. He sullenly puffed out a cloud of white smoke.
Brent patted him on the shoulder. âYou need to sleep. Youâve been too tired for the past few years.â
âFine, this incident ends here. Letâs go backâ Ethan put out his cigarette, then left the rooftop dejectedly.
Brent was right. Every part of the incident had solid proof, so nothing couldâve gone wrong. He
shouldnât waste time on these things.
If Olivia wanted to investigate it, he wouldnât stop her from doing whatever she wanted.
