Chapter 244
Even After Death
In the hospital, Jeff was lying on the hospital bed as always. Every day, he survived on nutrient
solutions and various equipment.
His body had weakened at a noticeable rate. His limbs had begun to shrink
He was like a flower that had lost its vigor and was clinging to the last bits of nutrients in the soil. He
was barely hanging on.
Olivia hadnât visited him in a while. Every time she saw her father like this, she would feel even worse.
Jeffâs face was already sunken. Oliviaâs tears dripped onto the back of his dry hand.
âDadâ¦â
She wished that a miracle would happen one day, and Jeff would wake up and look at her. She
yearned for just a glance from him, and maybe a few words too.
âDonât be sad, Olivia.â
Colin patted her gently on the back. Olivia lowered her head, not wanting anyone to see her at her
weakest moments.
Sobbing, Olivia covered her face. When she looked up again, she saw Colin listening to Jeffâs
heartbeat with a stethoscope.
âColin?â
Putting the stethoscope down, Colin smiled at Olivia. âI was a med student, remember? I wanted to
have a look at Mr. Fordham.â
âSorry for the trouble.â
âYouâre too kind, Olivia.â
Colin gave Jeff a regular check-up. Watching his movements, Olivia didnât think he was a mere student.
âOlivia, can I have a look at Mr. Fordhamâs latest medical report?â
âSure.â
Olivia found all the reports and showed them to Colin. Colin read every detail.
Time ticked by. A moment later, Colin finally looked up at her. The look in his eyes was wiss the usual
look in his eyes.
eep. It was different from
âOlivia, thereâs still hope for Mr. Fordhamâs illness. If Leo carries out the operation, the chances of
success are very high.â
Olivia sighed. âThatâs true. Weâve tried everything we could, but we still canât find him.â
âDonât worry, Olivia. Iâll help you look for him. Iâll ask my connections overseas for help.â
Sitting by the bed, Olivia wiped Jeffâs body clean with a hot towel. âI donât know if my dad can hang on
until then.â
âHe will.â
Olivia turned around, meeting Colinâs gaze. There was a determined look in his dark eyes.
After leaving the hospital, Colin regained his youthful attitude. âCan you treat me to a meal, Olivia? Iâm
starving.â
âSure. What would you like to eat?â
Olivia was an only child. Since young, she had always wished for siblings. In her eyes, Colin was a
younger brother to her; one that was obedient and adorable.
âThereâs a night market nearby. Letâs get some snacks there, Olivia.â
âThat works too.â
The night market in the area was a tourist attraction.
In a corner of the busy street, Olivia was holding a milkshake in one hand and candy in another.
Assorted snacks hung from her wrist in plastic bags.
Amidst the lights, Olivia smiled like an innocent child. There were no ulterior motives or sorrows behind
her smile.
It had been too long since she last hung out like this, snacking on her favorite foods like a normal
young woman.
âI remember you smiling a lot when you were young, Olivia. You look lovely when you smile. Youâre so
young, but you have to pretend to be an experienced woman.â
Olivia shook her head. âIâm not pretending. I was just crushed by the weight of life.â
âOlivia, will you return to your old self if Mr. Fordham wakes up?â
A gust of wind blew past them. The lights hanging on strings above them swayed in the wind. The
vintage vibes made the place look even prettier.
Olivia smiled. âI want to, but I canât go back anymore.â
Flower petals fluttered in the wind, and it looked like they were in a movie. A petal landed on Oliviaâs
hair.
âDonât move, Olivia.â
Olivia was stunned. Reaching out, Colin removed the petal from her hair.
His approach cast shadows on her face. It was only then that Olivia realized something.
The timid little boy who used to follow her everywhere had now grown up. He was even taller than her.
As the light from the lights shone on his face, he lifted the petal and said softly, âLook. The whole world
is trying to heal you. Only you refuse to have mercy on yourself.â
