Chapter 65
Even After Death
Everlyâs first reaction upon seeing Ethan was to cower. She might have been bold and outspoken at the
event, but she was only bolstered by the effect of alcohol and Oliviaâs presence.
She bore witness to Ethanâs deep love for Olivia, and she knew that he could be deeply cruel toward
outsiders.
Two years ago, she brought Olivia to a bar. When Ethan picked up Olivia, he shot Everly an icy look
when Olivia wasnât looking and warned, âThis is the last time.â
She was drenched in cold sweat when Ethan left, and she was haunted by the look in his eyes for a
few nights in her dreams.
Back to the present, Ethan shut the lighter and casually glanced at her, but it was enough to make her
tense up.
She gulped and said in a hushed voice, âUm, Mr. Miller, Iâm looking for Liv. Iâll excuse myself now.â
He shook off the cigarette ashes and gave her a look from the corner of his eye. âLetâs chat.â
She knew it wasnât going to be a casual chat, and as a result, she was reluctant to engage with him.
âWell, itâs very late at night. How about we chat next time? Promise.â
She was ready to flee but turned around and bumped into Brent, whom she secretly described as
Ethanâs hitman.
Brent said to her, âPlease, Ms. Hilton.â
Close to tears, she followed them to a nearby cafe. She couldnât stop shaking her legs after she was
seated, causing the table to
rattle as well.
When Ethan reached for his cup of latte, he was momentarily surprised by the messed up latte art, all
because of Everlyâs leg- shaking.
An awkward moment passed between them. She smiled politely at him and handed him the latte. âMr.
Miller, have a latte.â
Then, she immediately chastised herself in secret for falling into the habit of her line of work. The
situation grew awkward.
He put the latte aside and spoke to her, âI want to learn more about Olivia and Keith.â
Everly might have no idea about the brand of Ethanâs mental disorder, but she knew about his
possessiveness.
Oliviaâs exâhusband couldnât let her go, judging from how he was prodding around about Oliviaâs life.
Everly said bluntly, â Keith probably has feelings for Liv, but she isnât interested in him. Why else would
I put in the effort to matchmake?â
Hearing that, Ethan grew a little hostile. She recoiled and stole a careful glance at him as though she
was meeting her boss.â Uh, Mr. Miller, are you still interested in Liv?â
She had overstepped the boundary. He dodged the question and rapped his lanuckles on the table.
âWhat base are they on?â
âOh, god, no. I swear they havenât done anything. Liv was upset after the divorce and didnât even step
out of her place for a long time. I had to talk her into coming to the event today. I donât know why Keith
showed up, but he probably attended at Calvinâs invitation. Liv had nothing to do with that.â
Ethanâs suffocating silence and his unreadable eyes spooked Everly. She couldnât tell if he trusted her
words, and she wondered how Olivia managed to live with a man who barely showed his emotions.
âWell, I can swear on my life. If there was something between Liv and Keith, Iâd be crushed by a car!â
He finally looked at her but remained expressionless. She gritted her teeth and swore, âIâd be forever
alone if that happened!â
He seemed to think that wasnât brutal enough and added to the curse, âYouâd be broke for life.â
Ethan was shrewd enough to hit her where it hurt. She clenched her jaw and said, âFine! Iâd be broke
for life if that happened.â
