Change of Heart
a/n: first of all, i cant believe how many reads, votes and comments this fic has gotten so tysm for that. second of all, the comments are very amusing to read ( a lot of zavier slander which makes sense when i reread it). anyways, this is just a carry on from the last chapter for people who want to read it and if anyones confused about chapter 37, there is a time skip there of some months but enjoy :)
Third Person POV:
"Do you think your mom will mind that I'm here?" Zavier asked as they got to the front door of Isaac's house.
Isaac laughed and shook his head, pulling out his keys. "You're joking right? She loves you, she won't care a bit."
"Yeah, I'm starting to feel a bit..." But Isaac never heard how Zavier was feeling, his voice trailing off as they walked into the house.
Hearing the front door open, Isaac's mom immediately came rushing out of the kitchen, an irritated look on her face. "Isaac, you're la-" she stopped, realising Zavier was there. "Oh, Zavier, you're here too." She smiled.
Isaac rolled his eyes and was just going to escape to his room whilst Zavier and his mom had a chat, but Zavier grabbed his arm and pulled him back. "Actually Mrs Jones, it was my fault Isaac was out late, I wanted to talk to him about something so I'm sorry."
Isaac's mom was stunned; it's not like Zavier had said much, but that was the thing, Zavier never usually said anything, he would just normally stay quiet whilst Isaac's mom would clearly show off her favouritism.
"Oh, well, he should've called." She composed herself quickly, putting on a stern look towards Isaac.
"Iâ" Isaac was going to make up an excuse but Zavier interrupted.
"That was again my fault. Isaac was planning to call you but I was the one who made him turn off his phone so I apologise again."
That was a lie, but Isaac didn't go against it.
"Oh." Was all Isaac's mom said after a few seconds.
Nobody said anything and it was starting to get very awkward. Isaac decided they'd been silent long enough and did a stiff nod. "Great. Let's go Zavier." Isaac walked around his mom and headed up the stairs to his room, Zavier following behind him.
"Your mom's obsessed with me." Zavier spoke as Isaac sat on his bed.
"I know. One of the reasons I hated you."
"She shouldn't do that."
Annoyingly, Isaac laughed again and shrugged. "It's a bit late to change anything now. Anyways, once we both go to college, she won't have me or you, so sucks for her."
Zavier watched as Isaac casually went on his phone, texting someone. "Yeah, I guess." Zavier took the hint and dropped the subject. "Who are you texting?"
"Blaire."
"Really? Blaire from that soccer trip?"
"Yeah and I bet ten dollars you're not in contact with the girl from the restaurant and I bet another twenty that you can't remember her name."
Zavier didn't even remember which girl Isaac was talking about so simply flipped him off, before walking over and sitting next to him.
Isaac grinned smugly, "You owe me thirty."
"I never agreed to the bet."
"Because you knew I was right."
"Doesn't matter."
"Sore loser."
"Says you."
"Yes, says me."
"Weak response."
"Says you." Isaac flashed an insincere smile, leaning closer to him.
Isaac caught Zavier's gaze go to his lips before coming back up to his eyes quickly and realised just how close they were and pulled away, "Friends." He stood up, going to his desk.
Zavier frowned, but nodded anyways. "Friends." He sounded less enthusiastic then Isaac but he knew it was for the best.
"I've got to finish this biology work so feel free to do whatever you want, except from distract me or wreck my room."
"But I'll be bored." Zavier complained, but Isaac had gone silent and he could already hear the sound of typing from Isaac's laptop.
Isaac should've known Zavier wouldn't heed his simple rules of not distracting him or wrecking his room as in the space of five minutes, Zavier had rummaged through his stuff, not finding anything interesting so he now stood next to Isaac, watching him type.
"Distraction." Isaac warned but Zavier didn't move. "I'm not doing anything." He defended himself.
"Your stare's unnerving."
"Sorry?" Zavier's apology came out more as a question. He still remained staring, so Isaac just blocked him out, but that became more difficult when Zavier disappeared from view, making Isaac wonder where he'd gone before he felt arms wrap around him from behind, Zavier's face snuggling into his neck.
"Zavier." Isaac's typing slowed down, trying his best to carry on writing whilst feeling Zavier's warm breath tickle his neck.
"I'm bored."
Zavier's lips brushed against Isaac's neck, making him lean back into Zavier. He had completely stopped typing when Zavier had started to lay soft kisses on his neck but the sound of his laptop giving him a notification brought him back to the reality of where his work was due soon. "Friends." Isaac reminded, leaning forward so Zavier let go of him.
Zavier reluctantly stepped away and flopped onto the bed. "Where's your phone?"
"Why?"
"Found it." Zavier unlocked Isaac's phone, immediately heading to the games folder. He went to click on some kind of word crush game, but at the exact same time, 'gemgemð' had snapped Isaac, causing Zavier to accidentally click on the snapchat notification, whizzing him to her chat. "Gemma just snapped you."
"Well don't answer it then." Isaac responded quickly.
"I didn't mean to open it, the notification came at the same time I tried to go on a game."
"Oh, what did she say then?" Isaac distractedly asked, accidentally typing 'Gemma' instead of 'germs'.
"She said ha ha ha ha all in cap locks with no spaces between them."
Isaac paused for a second, muttering something along the lines that he didn't even remember what he had said. "Okay, thanks, leave it then."
Zavier went off the app and finally went back to the games, making sure that he wouldn't accidentally go on Isaac's snap again. Eventually, around half an hour later, Isaac finished his work, turning his laptop off and joining Zavier on the bed.
They both lay on their front; Isaac watching Zavier play a random game that he had no recollection of ever downloading. "You're so shit at that." Isaac chuckled seeing Zavier's team get defeated for the third time in a space of about five minutes.
"Shut up." Zavier grumbled, once again losing. "Not like you could do better."
"Uh, I'm pretty sure anybody could do better. Even a baby."
"Now you're distracting me." Zavier huffed, keeping his eyes fixed on the small screen.
"Mmhm." Isaac hummed in disagreement, but he stayed silent and quietly observed the game go on. (Though he couldn't help inputting a few remarks from time to time).
At one point, Isaac felt his eyelids start to go heavy and rolled onto his back, staring up at the ceiling and just... thinking.
Zavier noticed a few minutes later that it had been quiet for way too long, especially when he had accidentally blown up his own team's fortâ Isaac would've definitely made a joke out of it but there had been nothing. Zavier turned his head to see Isaac's whole body relaxed as he slept soundly.
It wasn't even that late, Zavier mused. He turned on his side and moved closer to Isaac, hesitating for a second, before reaching his hand out and running it through Isaac's hair.
"Fuck, Isaac, I think I'm whipped." Zavier muttered to himself a bit louder than intended, but he was grateful that Isaac was still asleepâ Yet unless it was his imagination, he'd sworn a ghost of a smile played on Isaac's lips.
***
"So what you're telling me is that you forgave him." Isaac had to speed walk to keep up with an impatient Gemma who was practically sprinting to her locker. "What were the tears for then? What was the oh Zavier means nothing to me now for then? What was thâ" With each question, Gemma's voice got progressively louder, and Isaac wasn't sure if she was aware of what she was doing, but either way, he was not liking the weird looks people were giving him.
"Okay, okay, I understand." He interrupted, leaning against the lockers as Gemma went through hers, his face blocked by her locker being open. "We're just gonna stay friends. That's it."
"You telling me that or Zavier?"
"I've told him. Loads. " After waking up last night with him spooning Zavier, Isaac had been forced to remind himself that all they were was friends, despite something else telling him it ran much deeper (and harder) then that. "I won't let him hurt me again."
Gemma's head poked out from behind her locker as she raised her brow at him, "Uh huh." She then shut her locker, books in her hands. "Well, I'm not gonna let him off easily just because you did."
Isaac shrugged, that seemed fair enough.
Suddenly, Gemma's eyes widened as she swore under her breath. "I just remembered I've got some stupid French homework due today. Fuck, I need to go find someone's work." She ran off, not waiting to hear Isaac's small goodbye.
Isaac was left alone and turned to see Dillon and Zavier at the opposite lockers, a bit further down than him. He couldn't see Dillon's face, but he could see Zavier who had his jaw clenched, a look of vexation on his face. He saw Dillon shake his head and Zavier say something else before Zavier stormed off, opening his locker and grabbing a book from it then slamming it shut and stalking off.
Isaac, of course, jogged up to Zavier who was walking away quickly. (What was it with everyone speeding down the hallways?)
"Zavier! What happened?"
Zavier jumped slightly, not expecting Isaac there, and stopped walking, allowing Isaac to catch up next to him. "He's a fucking dick."
"Who? Where are you going? Is it Dillon?" Isaac was confused, and curious, following Zavier to wherever he was going.
"Library, and yes, Dillon."
"What did he do?" Isaac questioned as he sat down next to Zavier at the table.
Zavier let out a huge sigh, shaking his head before looking at Isaac. "He's a sensitive bitch who can't handle his own feelings so takes it out by attacking other people who are getting what he wants." He let out in a huge rant, then casually looked away and opened his book to start reading.
Isaac grabbed the book out of his hands, his mouth slightly ajar taking in Zavier's words. "This is still Dillon right, your best friend?"
"No, I definitely don't need friends like that. I should've cut him off a long time agoâas soon as he said those fucking things about you, God I'm an idiot."
Isaac had no idea of what to say and he presumed his mouth resembled one of a goldfish, his mouth opening then shutting until he just settled for keeping quiet, giving a small nod and trying to stop the small smile from appearing on his face.
Zavier snatched the book back from Isaac's hands, allowing Isaac to actually take a good look at what Zavier was reading, his eyes widening when he saw the title. "You're still reading that?" Isaac exclaimed, glancing over to Margaret, the librarian, even though he knew she wouldn't scold him, regardless of how loud he raised his voice, however, that didn't stop a few pointed looks being shot his way from the other students. "You've been reading it for almost a month now."
Isaac, after many disagreements and lectures, had lent Zavier his favourite book: Catching fire. Zavier had 'claimed' to have read the first book, but Isaac knew he had only watched the movie but still allowed him to read the second book.
But now nearly a month had gone, and Zavier was still reading it. "I'm almost halfway through." If Isaac didn't know better, it was as if Zavier was bragging about it. Isaac snorted, using his hand to cover the laugh coming out to avoid getting on the nerves of more people. "Halfway? The book's not even long, how are you not even halfway? You probably read three words per minuteâ Actually, you probably... two pagesâ no... oneâ" Isaac's words weren't even audible towards the end as he started laughing at his own jokes that Zavier couldn't even understand, placing his head on the table, his shoulders moving back and forth showing off that he was laughing.
"Fuck off." Zavier mumbled, only because Isaac was right.
It took him about 30 minutes to read a chapter; he would visualise and really try to understand what was happening in a scene whilst Isaac was a quick reader, getting through many books in just days.
Isaac lifted his head off the table and looked at Zavier, opening his mouth to say something else, but then his gaze went to the book and an uncontrollable laugh (or giggle as Zavier would describe it) came out instead, forcing his forehead to lean against the table again. "I'm sorry, it's justâ I'm not laughing at you..." And maybe that would've sounded sincere if it weren't for the small detail that Isaac was still laughing whilst also trying to apologise for laughing.
It just didn't work.
"You're so annoying." Zavier fought the smile that was trying to show; he should act mad, pretend like he was upset to guilt trip Isaac, but he couldn't keep up the façade when Isaac lifted his face up again, his flushed cheeks being on display.
Zavier deliberately didn't start reading but Isaac could tell and shook his head, placing his hands on his warm cheeks. "No, no, please, carry on reading. You won't even notice I'm here, I swear."
Zavier assessed Isaac's look of innocence that he was putting on before slowly going to his bookmark and continuing to read.
True to Isaac's word, he actually went silent. Zavier wasn't sure what he was doing, but he was so engrossed in the book that he didn't care enough to try and find out... until he started to hear those same muffled chuckles start up again.
It had only been a few minutes, maybe five, maybe ten, he wasn't sure, but turned to look at Isaac who was covering his mouth with his hand. Seeing Zavier glaring at him, he turned his body away from Zavier and shook his head. "I'm sorry, you've been on that same page for ten minutes, I couldn't... I'mâ" Isaac started to puff out his words, still not looking at Zavier.
"Are you drunk or something?"
Isaac turned back around. He had stopped laughing but he still had a smile on his face. "No! No, I'm sober. Sober as I can be."
"Asshole." Zavier mumbled, rolling his eyes at Isaac's silliness.
But Isaac heard him and relayed with his own remark. "Maggot face."
"Douchebag."
"Dickass."
"Shit stain."
"Snaily idiot."
Zavier had to do a double take, furrowing his brows at Isaac's smirking face. "What?"
"I won."
"That was like a sixth grade comeback."
"Still won."
Zavier didn't agree at all but picked up his book and carried on reading from where he had stopped. "Let me read in quiet then."
"Fine." Isaac decided to actually not say anything more this time (or laugh) , scribbling on some paper with a pen he'd found. Therefore, Zavier was able to peacefully read in silence whilst also enjoying the knowledge of Isaac's presence near.
"So would you rather Peeta be with Katniss or Gale?" Zavier asked.
Isaac stopped his scribbling and turned to Zavier, animatedly explaining who he preferred straight away. Zavier knew that he could just carry on reading and find out for himself who would be the better fit, but what he also knew is that Isaac loved to talk about the books he read and would gladly do an analysis on all of them if he could. Zavier didn't fully relate with his enthusiasm, but it made him too feel happy when Isaac would explain things that he may not have noticed at first.
"I'm gonna go to maths." Isaac announced, having finished his explanation, and stood up. "I'll see you later though, right?"
Zavier nodded back, watching as Isaac gave a small smile and waved before leaving. Zavier glanced at the page number: 180 . He still wasn't even halfway yet.
Maybe Isaac did have a bit of a point, Zavier thought to himself, but he was not going to admit that to Isaac... not yet anyways.
edit 09/05 : hello, me again, i've seen many comments saying how they feel disappointed at the ending (oops sorry) and i apologise for that cuz i agree and realise that i probably shouldn't have ended it like that, so, if i were to write more, would people want it to focus on isaac/zavier again or on different characters (obviously characters already mentioned in the book) and would people want more chapters or a separate book by the side? if you're satisfied with the ending, then that's great, but if you're not, it'd be helpful to know what you'd like and i'll try my best to write it so... yea. also, it may take a bit of time to write cuz of exams and stuff but i wouldn't push it completely to the side, just a pre warning. thanks for reading!
