chapter 7
Change of Heart
Isaac POV:
"I think Will's the best goalkeeper." I spoke, going to write his name under the position.
It was lunchtime but I had been forced to spend it with Zavier in the library since Coach wanted us to be fully prepared for a tournament we had coming up soon. Personally, I could have done it perfectly by myself but no, Zavier had to tag along.
"But Will's a really good midfielder." He snatched the pen from me and scribbled out Will's name and put it underneath midfielders. I narrowed my eyes at him, sighing heavily, but accepted it since this was the 3rd time we had disagreed about Will's position.
I put my head on the table, resting it on my arms but turned to the side to see Zavier.
He worked away, not even caring about my lack of contribution. He tapped the pen against the table, biting his lip, as he probably thought about who to write next.
Finally, remembering I was here, he turned to look at me, making immediate eye contact. I quickly turned my head away, putting it fully facing the table.
"You're such a baby." He chuckled, to which I flipped him off.
Now it was his turn to sigh, "Fine, you write the people in their positions and I can review it after you've done. How about that?" He offered reluctantly.
I smiled and lifted my head up, grabbing the paper and the pen from him, and scribbling all the positions that I had been planning in my head. I felt Zavier's intense stare on me, kind of increasing my nerves, but I did my best to ignore it and a few minutes later I was done.
"There, done." I handed the paper to him, surveying his reaction to see if he approved. He raised his brows, a look of surprise on his face.
"It's good.. I actually agree with it." He reread it, checking for any mistakes that I could've made.
"No need to look that surprised, told you I'm a better captain than you." I smiled proudly at my amazing captain skills. He started to disagree but I ignored him and glanced up at the exact time Dillon walked into the library.
Straight away, I glanced away, not checking to see if he had noticed me looking. My fears were confirmed however when I heard footsteps coming towards us.
"Hello lovebirds." Dillon, very nicely, welcomed himself, doing some kind of weird handshake with Zavier. I felt like I was the one intruding on them, not the other way around.
"We're not lovebirds." I frowned, I don't even know where he got this messed up idea from. "And why are you even here?" Zavier was bad enough, I didn't need his lover boy tagging along too.
"Am I interrupting something?" He pulled up a chair, and sat opposite us.
"Yes, you in fact are, thanks for asking."
"Aw well... that's really tough, but I think I'm gonna stay." He smiled, making me want to wipe the smile right off his face.
Why does he act like a fucking two year old, Jesus? "Right.... Well I'll take my leave." I got up, very eager to get as far away from Dillon as I could.
Zavier remembering he had a voice decided to butt into the conversation now, "But we haven't completely finished yet?"
"It's basically finished." I shrugged and walked away, allowing Dillon to have more time with his lover boy.
On my way out of the library, I nearly ran straight into Harrison who was standing right outside the door, like he was planning to come in, but just decided not to.
"Woah." I swerved to the left, just avoiding him.
He gave me a sheepish smile, "Sorry."
"It's alright." I walked away but he joined me, walking right next to me. I took a quick peek at him to see him mumbling something to himself, fidgeting with his fingers, which was starting to freak me out slightly.
"Are you alright?" He jumped a bit at my question, but covered it up with a smile, and nodded his head.
We walked in silence, Harrison kind of following where I went, until he announced he was going to the toilets.
I breathed a sigh of relief; his fidgeting had started to make me nervous as well.
Getting to my locker, I saw Jax and Gemma standing by it. Jax looked puzzled, his brows furrowed, while Gemma looked like she was lecturing him on something.
"Isn't it normally the boy who asks the girl?" I heard Jax say, followed by a groan from Gemma.
"It doesn't matter. A girl can ask a guy and vice versa, and if you don't agree, then you're sexist." She argued.
"Who's asking who?" I stood next to them, very eager to know what was going on.
"Gemma wants to ask Harrison out." Jax blurted out. Gemma hit him on the shoulder, complaining about the fact that she wasn't the one who revealed it.
"Only on a date." She grumbled, folding her arms. I felt my eyes widen, and consciously morphed my expression back to deadpanned, but I think she noticed as she rolled her eyes at me.
"Harrison? Really Gemma... already?"
"So what Isaac, it's not like I'm proposing."
"I know." For now, I thought. "But why Harrison?"
"Why Harrison what?"
Shit.
My stomach dropped as I slowly forced myself to turn around, facing the guy who we'd just been talking about.
"Oh you know." He raised a brow at me as I tried hard to think of a lie. "Why Harrison - um.. anyways Gemma what were you saying?" I looked at Gemma, basically pleading for her to change the subject.
She sighed but thankfully spoke. "I was just telling him that you were planning on trying out for the soccer team." I was taken aback... Harrison trying out? I knew he liked soccer, but I didn't think he'd actually try out.
"Yeah, one of your teammates, I think Dan broke his leg yesterday so your Coach is letting anybody try out." He explained, seeing my expression.
"Oh, that's cool." Poor Dan, he was a decent player I couldn't lie.
An awkward silence ensued afterwards but was interrupted by the bell, followed by students emerging like a pack of ants from the cafeteria. Gemma and Harrison had a free together, so they headed to the library whilst Jax and I made our way to Biology.
The most boring class ever.
Taught by Mr James. His voice was so boring, it basically made you fall asleep and the sad thing was that he thought everybody loved his class.
Jax, who sat on my left, had already fallen asleep 5 minutes into the class, which was expected since he called this class his 'much needed nap time'.
I put my hand up, cringing at the excited look that came onto his face at someone contributing, "Can I go to the toilet?". The excitement was drained from his face as he nodded and gave me a hallway pass.
Stepping outside the classroom, I felt so free. I was just going to take a small stroll around the school, when I heard some very recognisable voices. Making my way towards the voices, I made sure that I could hear what they were saying, but not be seen.
"- If you wanted to go to a restaurant this Friday at seven?" I heard the last part of Gemma's sentence, most likely her asking Harrison on a date.
"All four of us?" Harrison asked obliviously. I had to use all my willpower to not smack my forehead at his dumbness.
"No... just the two of us?" She responded unsurely, biting her lip.
"Oh like a date?" She nodded in response to his question, looking at him with hopeful eyes.
He smiled, "That'd be cool."
"Great." She gave him a huge grin. "Should we head back?"
"You go, I'll be there in a second." He urged her, not dropping the smile off of his face.
She nodded, then gave him a small wave and headed back to the library.
I could tell she was containing her excitement, and I knew she was going to tell me all the small details about the date, something I was not as excited about.
As soon as she walked around the corner, Harrison's face changed. From one that just looked happy, he now looked stressed, running his hand through his hair. I heard him mumble a few words, something that sounded like "Fuck, why .... I do that".
Very broken sentences.
I leaned forward a bit more so I could try and hear better but my foot accidentally slid across the floor and made a loud, squeaky noise.
I quickly slapped my hand over my mouth, hoping he hadn't heard, but his head instantly turned to the side, looking for who was there. I decided that I'd rather not be caught here so I turned around, about to speed walk away when I tripped over my foot and introduced myself to the floor.
Translation: I fell.
Now Harrison's footsteps were not that far away but I just accepted my fate. I pushed myself up off the ground to once again come face to face with Harrison.
"What are you- why are you here?" Before I had the chance to speak, he spoke again. "What did you hear?"
"Nothing." I lied.
He clearly didn't believe me, tapping his foot against the ground as I waited for him to say something else.
"Are you mad at me?" He finally asked.
"No, why would I be? I already knew Gemma liked you." I confessed, expecting him to be relieved, but he looked more worried.
"Gemma?" He muttered more to himself, looking down at the ground before looking back up with a strained smile. "Yeah, Gemma."
"Are you alright?" I stepped closer to him but he immediately stepped back.
Ouch.
"Yeah I'm fine." He didn't meet my eye, focusing anywhere but on me.
I tried again, and moved towards him. "But-" I started, but I was cut off.
"You should get back to your lesson. See you at soccer." He walked the other way, not bothering to look back, and I couldn't lie and say that didn't hurt a tiny bit.
Knowing you've done something to hurt someone but not knowing what you did.
