Chapter 11

The Boy in the Walls

Oliver woke up with a start, and groggily looked around, taking in his surroundings. The first thing he saw was Isaac sitting a few feet away, looking at some odd rectangular thing in his hand. Isaac looked up and noticed Oliver, who was still staring at the strage contraption in the humans palm.

"Ahem, uh...hi?" Isaac spoke, startling Oliver in the process.

"H-hello..." Oliver spoke in a raspy voice.

"How are you feeling? Did you sleep well?"

"Yeah...t-thanks for letting m-me use this bed..." Oliver said, offering a half smile.

"Oh no problem. Can i get you anything?"

"A-a glass of water would be nice" Oliver's throat was horse and raw, and desperately needed hydration. Isaac nodded and let to get the beverage.

Oliver noticed the that strange thing that Isaac had been holding was now laying on the desk, unguarded. 'What could be so interesting about it?' The borrower's curiosity got the best of him and he walked to it. It appeared to be made of medal and had a glassy surface. Oliver touched it and it lit up surprising him. The borrower continued looking at it with wonder.

Isaac walked in carrying a thimble of water and stopped when he saw Oliver studying his phone. The tiny boy looked so  adorable as he confusedly touched it, oblivious to Isaacs presence. The human chuckled when the phone buzzed with a notification, and startled Oliver. The teen looked back at Isaac, who was trying -and failing- to suppress a grin. Oliver blushed and yelped, surprised at the humans presence. "That's a phone" Isaac said sarcastically.

"What's a fo-nee?" Oliver inquired the hint of country showing through. "And what is it used for"

"Here, I'll show ya," Isaac said sitting down at the desk and reaching for the device. "See, if you tap it and swipe there is a camera"

"What's that?" Oliver said, tilting his head like a confused puppy.

"You can take pictures and stuff wanna see?" The tiny nodded and Isaac lifted his phone up and pointed the camera at Oliver. When it flashed to take the photo, Oliver flinched and covered his face.

"What was that!" Oliver yelled, blinking rapidly.

"Sorry, guess i forgot to turn the flash off. But look how it turned out!" Isaac held the phone to where Oliver could see the picture.

"Woah, its me! But how? It looks like I'm frozen in time."  Oliver looked at the picture of himself quizzically. He walked around the device, studying it with a confused expression on his face.

Isaac couldn't help it, he laughed, Oliver looked up in mock offense and said "who are you laughing at ya big doof?"

Isaac stopped laughing enough to finally speak "sorry- i just you looked so-and then-you-you should have-seen your face!" He then erupted in a fit of laughter.

Oliver looked away blushing "w-well i don't t-think is funny!" He said with a fake pout.

After Isaac finally calmed down, Oliver waked over to where the human had put his water. He sat down Indian style and drank from the bucket sized cup. An awkward silence was finally broken when Isaac spoke "you seem to be feeling better, did you get a lot of sleep?"

"I-i suppose"Oliver drawled looking into the 'cup' of water "i-it was more comfortable then m-my normal bed so...so that's cool..."

"That's good..." Isaac replied, thinking of another question. "Hey Oliver,"

Oliver looked up and met the humans gaze "y-yeah?" He answered

"Why do you always stutter? I don't mean to pry or anything i was just wondering....you don't have to answer i jus-" Isaac was interrupted by Oliver speaking.

"I-i just....i dunno, i just started doing it for some reason. Why, is it annoying you?" He looked up with a sudden hint of panic.

Isaacs eyes went wide "no, i was just wondering, its not annoying its actually kinda cute oh wait, ugh...please forget I said anything" he stumbled over his words, then facepalmed with a groan.

Oliver giggled "you know, you don't actually seem all that mean..." this made Isaac pause and look at Oliver with an odd expression.

"Wait, why would you think i was mean?" Said the human.

"Well humans are mean, that's what all borrowers are taught as kids"

"But-but I'm not mean, and I'm a human. I promise I would never, under any circumstance, hurt you." Isaac said in a kind tone.

"Okay..." Oliver hummed thoughtfully.

"One question though, you said you were taught that as a kid, so is that why you were so freaked out when we first met?" Isaac inquired. Oliver felt a pang of guilt at the humans tone, and remembered how kind the human had been since they'd met.

"Well, uhh...because I-I'm a borrower, and normally humans are mean and do...things to borrowers, I was kinds scared. And that's why I was so freaked out." Oliver said starring at the ground, which was now suddenly far more interesting.

"Wait...you aren't scared right now are you?"Isaac said with concern.

"N-not of you, not anymore at least, but with other humans, yea." He said with a sigh.

"Oh, okay. Well I'm glad you trust me now!" Isaac said with a grin.
