Chapter 3
Secrets Of The Sullivan Sisters by Ada Leonard
Carolineâs heart clenched. In her memory, the head of the Faraday family had never been interested in women. He often wore a cold look on his face as if he was completely devoid of emotions, and he had been unattainable.
âCould it be that Iâve taken his first night?â Caroline wondered.
If that was the case, then it was no wonder he was so angry.
She was the one who took the initiative in the beginning, but when the man woke up, he fl*pped their positions and pinned her underneath him.
Thinking of this, Caroline felt that the parts of her collarbone that he had nibbled on last night were burning up, and even the discomfort throughout her b*dy was becoming oddly amplified.
âHoney, did you get the wrong person? This is Caroline. Sheâs just a little housekeeper who recently started working here.â
As soon as Shirley noticed that the situation had gone awry, she immediately spoke up. Nevertheless, she didnât forget to toss Caroline a fierce glare, thinking, âDisgusting! Why is she so into seducing men? Why doesnât she take a look at herself in the mirror, huh?â
âA little housekeeper?â Nathan peered down at her, sizing Caroline up without the slightest change in his expression.
Anxiety stirred within Caroline when she was faced with the manâs gaze. Still, she calmly lifted her face and purposefully revealed the nasty scar on the right side of her face to him. âYouâve mistaken me for someone else, Mr. Faraday. I donât know you, and Iâm just a housekeeper here.â
It was only then Nathan noticed the long scar that ran from the top to the bottom of the right side of Carolineâs face. The hideous and eye-piercing scar had destroyed her beauty.
A slight frown crossed Nathanâs face as he mused, âIndeed, this face doesnât resemble hers.â
Nevertheless, he still questioned her, âThen why did you run away just now?â
âI didnât run, Mr. Faraday. I just wanted to get back to work in the kitchen.â
Nathan stared at Caroline for a couple more seconds before he affirmed that the face he saw in the room belonged to Shirley.
But Shirley was by his side, and he had mistaken a housekeeper for her.
âYou may go now.â
âYes, Mr. Faraday.â Caroline turned around and went into the kitchen.
Then, Nathan headed upstairs, leaving Shirley behind.
â¦â¦â¦â¦
An infuriated Shirley rushed into the kitchen and found Caroline. âIâm warning you, Caroline! Donât you dare approach my husband in the future!â she warned.
Caroline merely cast a calm glance at the irritated woman. âI donât want to approach him. In fact, I can leave Royal Garden right now, but you have to let my grandma go!â
âYour task isnât over just yet. I already told him that youâre a housekeeper here. If my husband doesnât see you around, itâll arouse his suspicions, so you have to work as a housekeeper for the time being.â
âWork as a housekeeper here?â Caroline mused.
Her heart started racing when Caroline recalled Nathanâs condescending gaze toward her. She didnât want to stay here for another moment.
Alas, Caroline had no choice but to do as she was told when she thought about her grandmother, Nora.
âShirley, youâd better give it your all to cement your position as Mrs. Faraday. I suppose you wouldnât want to make a fool out of yourself before me,â Caroline taunted.
Hearing Carolineâs words, Shirley fell speechless.
Shirley looked into Carolineâs clear eyes. There was an inexplicable glimmer in them, and all Shirley wanted to do at that moment was make Caroline go blind.
After all, it didnât make sense for such an ugly woman to possess such a mesmerizing pair of eyes.
The truth was that Shirley had undergone extensive plastic surgeries. Back then, she spent a lot on hiring a renowned plastic surgeon, who claimed that he once saw a stunning young lady on the bustling street of Doveston. Hence, Shirleyâs face was reconstructed based on the young ladyâs.
However, when Caroline was brought back from the countryside, it was revealed that she looked exactly like Shirley, save for the obvious scar on her face.
Shirley couldnât help wondering if Caroline was the stunning beauty on the street of Doveston.
But at the same time, she found it unconvincing.
That was because Caroline was an ugly country bumpkin. She probably didnât know where Doveston was.
The raging jealousy in Shirleyâs eyes slowly dissipated. No matter how beautiful Carolineâs eyes were, they would never be able to hide that hideous scar on Carolineâs face, and an ugly woman would always be ugly.
âUgly freak!â Shirley uttered triumphantly before walking out, wriggling her hips as she did so. She then ordered one of the housekeepers, Julie, âLet Caroline have the smallest housekeeperâs room, and make her do the dirtiest and most tiring tasks!â
â¦â¦â¦â¦
Caroline returned to the housekeeperâs room and sat in front of the mirror, looking at the nasty scar on her face. In truth, she wasnât born like that.
